A video of Seun Kuti, son of Afrobeat maestro, Fela Kuti, boasting of slapping policemen is trending.

Although it is unclear when the recording was made, Seun was seen  saying that he had slapped many policemen because of who he is.

“Some of una police go slap una, una go come Instagram to explain. You know how many police I don tear slap?” he asked in pidgin. Read more 

Move to take over houses in Ogun community unsettles residents (Punch)

Residents of Oke-Ela and its environs in the Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State have been thrown into panic following a court order authorising a family to take over not less than 300 houses and plots of land in the area.

The State High Court sitting in Abeokuta had granted the prayers of the Akinde Otegbeye family, which claimed to be the original owner of the land in the community and to also take possession of over 300 houses and underdeveloped plots of land in the community.

It was gathered that members of the family went to the community in the early hours of Wednesday with mobile policemen and court bailiffs to take possession of the properties on the land as ordered by the court. Read more

Airport demolition: FAAN to compensate landlords (Punch)

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has announced plans to compensate occupants who legally acquired their land at the site of the recently-demolished airport in a bid to ensure safety at the facility.

The Acting General Manager Public Affairs, Faithful Hope-Ivbaze disclosed this to our correspondent in Abuja.

She said,” Yes they will be compensated if the occupants acquired the land legally.” Read more 

NANS demands registrar’s resignation as students spend nights outside Lagos JAMB office to register (Vanguard)

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called for the resignation of Prof Ishaq Olarewaju Oloyede, the registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), over the hardship of Nigerian students to register for the Direct Entry.

A viral video sighted by Vanguard on Sunday revealed how students were sleeping at the premises of the JAMB Zonal Headquarters located in Ikoyi, Lagos, as they battled to register for Direct Entry.

The victims who were filmed by an undisclosed executive of NANS said they had been sleeping outside the gate of the JAMB office for days as their efforts to get their Direct Entry registration done proved abortive. Read more 

Dozens killed, over 50 houses razed in Nasarawa herdsmen attack (Guardian)

About 40 farmers, including women and children, have been killed by suspected herdsmen in Takalafiya village in the Gitata district of Panda Development Area in Karu Local Council.

An eyewitness, Moses, alleged that the attackers were Fulani, who invaded the village, shooting sporadically and throwing dynamites at houses while people slept.

Among the victims was a pastor of Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA), Rev. Daniel Danbeki, and several of his members, including women and children. Read more 

How ‘poor planning’ forced policy summersaults ahead of Buhari’s exit (DailyTrust)

The outgoing administration of President Muhammadu Buhari has tactically reversed some of its policy decisions in the last eight years.

Some observers told Daily Trust on Sunday that although some of the policy summersaults, which came as a result of poor planning, while others were sold as dummies to the president by some people for personal gains, they were good for the system.

They said that while it was not a bad idea to review decisions once apparent glitches were established, some of the reversals witnessed in the last few weeks would negatively impact on the legacies of the president, who has few days to leave after eight years in power. Read more

A university professor has broken a world record after living underwater without depressurisation for 74 days.

But Joseph Dituri isn’t surfacing just yet, as he’s aiming to make it to triple figures.

Prof Dituri has been living in Jules’ Undersea Lodge, which lies at the bottom of a 30ft-deep lagoon in Key Largo, Florida in the US. Read more 

Prince Harry & Meghan Markle seen on sushi date in 1st photos together since King Charles’ coronation (HollywoodLife)

Prince Harry, 38, and Meghan Markle, 41, were seen heading out on a rare date night in their first photos since King Charles‘ coronation. The couple dined at Michelin star Japanese restaurant Sushi by Scratch Restaurants, close to their Santa Barbara home. Meghan and Harry walked side by side as they approached the eatery, both laughing and smiling in the photos snapped across the street published by the Daily Mail.

Meghan was casual and stylish in a brown colored mini dress, which she styled with a neutral white bucket bag and a camel pair of Hermes Oran sandals. She was also seen holding a pair of sunglasses, and finished her look with a pair of hold earrings. Harry was also casually dressed in a black t-shirt and white jeans, echoing Meghan’s all white ensemble.

The dinner could have also been an early wedding anniversary celebration, as the pair tied the knot five years ago on May 19 — which is coming up on Friday. Since walking down the aisle, the couple have become parents to two adorable kids: son Prince Archie, 4, and daughter Princess Lilibet, 1, who they are raising in California. Read more

Herders in Kenya kill 10 lions, including Loonkiito, one of the country’s oldest (AP)

One of Kenya’s oldest wild lions was killed by herders and the government has expressed concern as six more lions were speared at another village on Saturday, bringing to 10 the number killed last week alone.

The male lion named Loonkiito was 19 years old and was described as frail by Kenya Wildlife Service spokesperson Paul Jinaro, who said it wandered out of the Amboseli national park into a village in search of food on Thursday night.

Six other lions from the same national park were speared by herders after they killed 11 goats in Mbirikani area, Kajiado county. The deaths brought to 10 the number of lions killed by herders last week in escalated human-wildlife conflict that has worried the government. Read more

Michael J. Fox and his wife, Tracy Pollan, decided to expand their family this Mother’s Day with a sweet new addition.

Fox shared a photo on his Instagram of his wife’s “new baby,” which happens to be an adorable, extremely photogenic puppy named Blue. In the picture, the new puppy looks up at the camera with bright eyes, a neon pink collar on, and pink flowers blurred out in the background.

Atiq Ahmed: The life of India’s gangster-politician killed on live TV (BBC)

Last month, Atiq Ahmed, one of India’s most dreaded gangster-politicians, was shot dead live on TV along with his brother. The shocking murder marked the end of his four-decade-long reign of terror in Prayagraj, a city once known for its rich culture. Soutik Biswas in New Delhi and Vikas Pandey in Prayagraj piece together Ahmed’s tumultuous life, in which the boundaries between crime and politics became blurred.

On a foggy January morning in 2005, Raju Pal, a newly-minted lawmaker, was travelling in the northern Indian city of Prayagraj (formerly known as Allahabad) when two vehicles suddenly appeared out of nowhere, swerved dangerously and pulled up in front of his Toyota SUV.

More than half-a-dozen men jumped out and began firing into the car at Pal. After raining several rounds from their handguns, they walked away. Bystanders pulled out the crumpled, bleeding legislator and carried him to another vehicle to take him to the hospital. Read more

After scoring his third hat trick for Gent in their 4-0 victory over Cercle Brugge on Saturday, Nigerian striker Gift Orban boasted that he lives for goals, adding that he is hungry for more, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The 21-year-old has been nothing short of exceptional following his €3.5m transfer from Norwegian club Stabaek to Gent in January.

Barcelona sealed their first La Liga title since 2018-19 with four games to spare after a stylish win at the home of city rivals Espanyol.

Barca were 3-0 up by half-time, Robert Lewandowski scoring his 20th league goal of the season before Alejandro Balde, 19, doubled the lead.

Lewandowski added the third before Jules Kounde’s header made it 4-0. Espanyol did reduce the deficit through Javier Puado and Joselu but remain in trouble near the bottom of the table. Read more

Cycling boss sure Port Harcourt ready to host successful championship (Guardian)

The Cycling Federation of Nigeria (CFN), in conjunction with Rivers State government, has concluded plans to host the National Cycling Road Championship in Port Harcourt on May 21, 2023.

CFN President, Giadomenico Masari, at the weekend, commended Governor Nyesome Wike for approving to host a national cycling championship on the eve of his departure, to support the development of the sport.

“This is good for the sport, especially the prize money, which is the first of its kind in Nigeria’s cycling,” Masari said. Winners in the four categories of the one-day championship, Masari said, will earn between N300,000 and N600,000 along with other consolation prizes. Read more

Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard says there’s ‘no hope’ in title race after loss to Brighton (BBC)

While mathematically it’s not yet confirmed, the faces of the Arsenal players at the end of their 3-0 defeat to Brighton on Sunday made it clear they knew the Premier League title race was over.

Some stood staring into the distance, others sat on the pitch and looked at the ground as their opponents raced over to the away end to celebrate with their jubilant fans.
