Two new cases of polio have been confirmed in Hadejia and Suletankarkar Local Government Areas of Jigawa State, marking a setback after nearly a decade of being declared polio-free.

The disclosure was made by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) during a media dialogue on polio and routine immunisation held in Dutse, the state capital.

Speaking on behalf of UNICEF Kano Chief Field Officer Mr. Rahama Rihood Farah, Health Manager, Dr. Serekeberehan Seyoum Deres warned that polio remains a highly contagious disease with severe consequences, including paralysis and death among young children. Read more

Lagos records 517,394 traffic infractions in one year, says commissioner (Guardian)

The Lagos State Government has revealed that between May 2024 and March 2025, about 517394 traffic infractions were recorded across the state.

Lagos State Commissioner for Transport, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, revealed this on Tuesday at the annual ministerial press briefing in Ikeja.

Osiyemi disclosed that 470,523 violations were captured by the Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology in compliance with Transport Sector Reform Law 2018, as part of the ongoing enforcement of the Speed Limit violations on Lagos Road via the Intelligent Transport System and Plate detection. Police in Kaduna have launched a thorough investigation into a tragic incident on April 22, where a Dane gun discharged during a suspected shooting competition in the Abakpa area of Kaduna city, killing a 12-year-old boy, Abubakar Muhammed, and injuring seven others.

The Kaduna State Police Command has promised to provide updates as assessments continue to clarify the circumstances of the incident.

In a statement issued on 22 April 2025, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Mansir Hassan, said: “On 22nd April 2025 at about 0830 hrs, the Police received a distress call regarding a suspected blast in the Josawa Road area of Abakpa, Kaduna. Residents of Kano, Katsina and Jigawa states have been undergoing hardship following cuts in power supply by the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO).

They said in the last three days, they got power supply for between two and three hours daily.

Killings Across Nigeria: IGP orders withdrawal of MOPOL officers from unauthorized assignments (Vanguard)

In response to the persistent wave of killings and attacks in Plateau, Benue, the Southeast, and other parts of Nigeria, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered the immediate withdrawal of Mobile Police (MOPOL) officers deployed for unauthorized purposes.

The IGP issued the directive during a meeting with Police Mobile Force (PMF) Squadron Commanders, convened to review operational strategies for addressing the escalating insecurity across the country.

“Directives have already been issued concerning the withdrawal of PMF personnel from unauthorized deployments. All commanders are to enforce this directive without delay. A firm but gradual withdrawal from non-core assignments is underway,” Egbetokun said. Read more

After 40 years, Minna airport commences commercial flights

The Niger State government has formally announced the commencement of scheduled flight operations from the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Airport, Minna, as it is now named.

The government, through New Niger Aviation (NNA), a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) created to manage and enhance the aviation ecosystem in Niger State, entered into partnership with Overland Airways Limited to commence the scheduled commercial flight operations. Read more

Mutfwang, who disclosed this at a stakeholders’ meeting with eminent citizens of the state over the recent spate of killings on the Plateau on Monday, said the intelligence reports depicted that Wase Grazing Reserve in Wase Local Government, Pandam Games Reserve in Qua’ Pan Local Government Area, among others, have become dens of bandits, terrorists, kidnappers and abodes for criminal elements.

Shannon Sharpe has denied allegations of rape levied against him in a civil lawsuit filed on Sunday, with his attorney claiming Sharpe’s accuser presented the former NFL star with a “secretly recorded” and “heavily edited” video he says is designed to depict a nonconsensual encounter. 

Sharpe, 56, is being sued for $50 million by a woman under the pseudonym “Jane Doe,” who accused the current ESPN personality of sexually assaulting her in late 2024 and early 2025. 

“Mr. Sharpe categorically denies all allegations of coercion or misconduct — especially the gross lie of ‘rape’ — and will not submit to what he sees as an egregious attempt at blackmail,” Sharpe’s attorney, Lanny J. Davis, said in a statement that Sharpe shared on his X account. “He stands firmly by the truth and is prepared to fight these false claims vigorously in court.”  Read more
