July flood alert: 20 states at risk despite N620b intervention (Punch)
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has issued a flood alert for the month of July, warning that states including Sokoto, Lagos, Edo, Benue, and 16 others are at risk of experiencing flash floods.
This came as the Africa Environmental Health Organisation, climate change adaptation researchers, and members of the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners, among others, lambasted state governments following the recent devastating floods that ravaged several states, calling for an intense scrutiny over the management of ecological funds allocated to affected regions.
Findings showed that despite receiving over N620bn in ecological funds, many states seem ill-prepared to mitigate the impact of such disasters, raising questions about the effectiveness of these funds in enhancing environmental resilience and disaster preparedness. Read more
Court sentences one-chance driver to 12 years imprisonment (Guardian)
A Lagos Domestic Violence and Sexual Offences Court sitting in Ikeja has convicted and sentenced a one-chance driver, Valentino Andrew, to 12 years imprisonment for theft and conspiracy.
He committed the offence sometime in 2020 while operating a one-chance syndicate along the Lekki-Epe to Iyana Oworo corridor of Lagos State.
Justice Olubunmi Abike-Fadipe found him guilty of the charges after he pleaded guilty to the three counts in the amended charge filed against him by the State government. Read more
NCAA approves commencement of Enugu Air (Channels)
The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has granted a license for the commencement of domestic flight operations by Enugu Air.
The disclosure was contained in a statement signed by the NCAA Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Michael Achimugu, on Monday.
Enugu Air was officially inaugurated on Monday, July 7, 2025, by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, at a ceremony attended by Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah. The airline commenced commercial operations with three Embraer 170 aircraft, each with a seating capacity of approximately 76 passengers. Read more
2027 Coalition: 2 PDP governorship candidates in Ondo, Jegede, Agboola join ADC (Vanguard)
Two former governorship candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State, Eyitayo Jegede and Chief Agboola Ajayi, have officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), aligning with a growing coalition seeking to challenge President Bola Tinubuโs administration in 2027.
Other prominent defectors to the coalition include former Senator representing Ondo South, Nicholas Tofowomo; former House of Representatives member, Prof. Bode Ayorinde; ex-PDP State Chairman, Tola Alabere; and former PDP Publicity Secretary, Kennedy Peretei, among others.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) on Tuesday set 150 as the cut-off mark for admission into universities in the country.
JAMB made the decision during the 2025 Policy Meeting on Admissions, held at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja.
According to the exam body, the cut-off mark for colleges of nursing is 140, colleges of agriculture 100, and colleges of education 100. Read more

Governor Dikko Radda of Katsina state has said about 90 percent of bandits terrorising the state are neither strangers nor outsiders.

Three men have been found guilty of an arson attack on a London warehouse linked to Ukraine on behalf of Russian mercenary group Wagner.
Jakeem Rose, 23, Ugnius Asmena, 20, Nii Mensah, 23, were found guilty at the Old Bailey of aggravated arson with intent to endanger life after the blaze at the unit, which sent aid and internet satellite equipment to Ukraine.
The attack was orchestrated by Dylan Earl, 20, and Jake Reeves, 23, who had already admitted aggravated arson on behalf of the Wagner Group – which the UK government has proscribed as a terrorist group. Read more
King Charles III greets France’s Emmanuel Macron on state visit (UPI)
French President Emmanuel Macron was welcomed Tuesday in London by Britain’s King Charles III for a three-day state visit in the first since 2008 by France’s leader.
Macron and his wife, Brigitte, were greeted at RAF Northolt in west London by William and Catherine, the prince and princess of Wales, before meeting Charles and Queen Camilla in Windsor town centre after a horse-drawn carriage procession through the streets.
It marked the first state visit by a European Union leader since “Brexit” in 2020 and a renewal of diplomatic relations with Britain’s former EU member states. Read more
South Africa hits out at new Trump tariffs (RT)
South Africa has pushed back against a โunilateralโ 30% tariff imposed by US President Donald Trump, calling the move a โcontested interpretationโ of trade realities amid strained relations between the two countries.
Trump on Monday announced new duty rates on several of Americaโs trading partners, in letters addressed to leaders of the affected countries โ including South Africa. He said the Pretoria-Washington relationship has been โunfortunately, far from reciprocal,โ and declared that โany and allโ products from the country would be subject to a โtariff of only 30%โ starting August 1, โseparate from all sectoral tariffs.โ
The US leader claimed the levies were needed to offset years of South African trade barriers and policies, which he blamed for โunsustainable trade deficitsโ against the US. Read more
Report details killings, discrimination against religious minorities in post-Assad Syria (CNA)
Allies of the new Syrian government and other non-state actors have continued violence and discrimination against Christians, Druze, and Shia Muslims, according to a new report from the US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF).
Syrian rebels, many of whom were affiliated with Hayโat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), toppled former Syrian President Bashar al-Assadโs regime in late 2024. The report notes that HTS members, many of whom were foreign fighters, engaged in mass killings and other forms of persecution against religious minorities during the overthrow of Assad and have continued violations after taking control of the government. Liverpool players return to training after Jota death (BBC)
Liverpool players have started to return to the club for pre-season training following the death of team-mate Diogo Jota.
The first set of players were scheduled to come back from their summer break last Friday but that was postponed after Jota, 28, and his 25-year-old brother Andre Silva died in a car accident.
Jota was on his way back to Liverpool for pre-season and, as doctors had advised him against flying because he had undergone minor surgery, he was making the trip by car and ferry. Read more
