Jurgen Klopp hints Liverpool could make ‘‘very positive’’ January transfer move to follow Luis Diaz example

Jurgen Klopp has suggested Liverpool could look to make a “very positive” signing in the January transfer window.

The Reds are currently depleted in forward areas, with Diogo Jota out with a hamstring injury and Luis Diaz suffering a serious setback in his recovery from a knee injury. Roberto Firmino is also currently on the sidelines, though it is not expected to be a long-term issue.

After a slow start to the season, Liverpool need to hit the ground running after the World Cup break and the upcoming transfer window could prove to be crucial.

Diaz was signed 12 months ago and made a flying start to life in England as he gave the Reds a real boost for the second half of the season. Klopp hopes Liverpool can find someone to have a similar impact this campaign.

“Last season we had Luis Diaz come in, which was very helpful for that part of the season, everybody would see that the same way,” Klopp said.

“But doing something again that is very positive – why not?”

Liverpool spent Christmas sixth in the Premier League table and 15 points behind Arsenal at the top, leaving themselves with plenty of work to do to even play a role in the title race.

Klopp and his side played friendlies against AC Milan and Lyon in Dubai during the World Cup, and the Reds boss felt there was plenty to be encouraged by.

“All the signs I got in the Dubai training camp were super positive,” Klopp said.

“I trust in our process and the things we do. It was completely different to pre-season. Completely different.

“In all the games I saw we were going in the right direction. I am positive we can pick up where we left off rather than go back to the start of the season.

“I don’t want to start talking about it now but we have two long term injuries up front which is not helpful. Never was, never will be.” (Standard)
