A Chief Magistrate’s court sitting in Kano, yesterday, remanded a 47-year-old Chinese national, Geng Quanrong, in a correctional centre for alleged murder of his Nigerian girlfriend, Ummukulsum Sani Buhari, 22.
Geng, who lives in Nasarawa Government Reserved Area (GRA), Kano, was arraigned on one –count charge of homicide, a criminal offence under section 221 of the Kano State Penal Code.
While the case was mentioned, Chief Magistrate, Hanif Sanusi-Ciroma, declined to allow the suspect to take his plea on the grounds that the lower court lacks the jurisdiction to hear the case.
The prosecuting counsel, Khalifa Auwal Hashim, urged the court to adjourn the case pending the legal advice from the state ministry of justice for appropriate direction.
The state counsel also appealed to the court to return the accused to a Correctional facility. Consequently, Chief Magistrate Ciroma ordered that Quanrong be remanded in Kurmawa Correctional Centre, pending the legal advice and adjourned the matter to October 13, for further mention.
Earlier, the Prosecuting counsel said Quanrong committed the offence on September16, at Janbulo Quarters in Kano. He alleged that on the same date at about 9:30p.m., he attacked Buhari with a knife after a misunderstanding.
The police said that Sani was rushed to the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital in Kano, where she was pronounced dead by a medical doctor.
MEANWHILE, the House of Representatives, yesterday, directed the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Alkali Baba Usman. to ensure a thorough investigation into the gruesome murder of Buhari by her Chinese lover, Mr. Geng Quanrong.
The deceased, who was a member of the National Youths Corps (NYSC) was allegedly murdered by her estranged lover on Friday, September 16, while in her house at Janbulo, Dorayi Babba in Gwale Local Council of Kano State.
Adopting a motion sponsored by Mr. Kabiru Alhassan Rurum, during plenary presided by Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila, the House ordered the suspension of the activities of the company the Chinese works for pending the determination of the legal status of the suspect.
Asking its Interior Committee to commiserate with the immediate family of the deceased, the House urged the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria and Chinese community in Kano State to condole with the Government and people of Kano State and Nigeria.
Rurum while moving the motion maintained that the deceased was allegedly killed by Quanrong at about 9:30 p.m. with a premeditated intention to commit the act.
