Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has been recognised with a prestigious lifetime achievement award for his groundbreaking efforts in promoting gender inclusion within the state.
The accolade was presented to him at the ongoing 7th Voice of Women (VOW) Conference and Awards in Abuja, where prominent women leaders from across Africa gathered to celebrate his accomplishments.
Governor AbdulRazaq’s remarkable achievements in the realm of gender inclusion were met with widespread praise from attendees at the event. His groundbreaking policies and initiatives have led to unprecedented numbers of women in key leadership positions within the state. Notably, he currently boasts the highest number of women in the cabinet in the history of Nigeria.
The award, presented by Women Radio 91.7fm, recognised Governor AbdulRazaq as a historic figure in Nigeria for his commitment to gender inclusion. The event, attended by First Ladies from different states, female federal and state parliamentarians, ministers from across the continent, and numerous gender rights activists, highlighted the significance of the Governor’s contributions.
First Lady of Kwara and Chairperson of Governors Wives’ Forum Ambassador (Mrs) Olufolake AbdulRazaq led her colleagues to the event, emphasising the importance of gender inclusion in political leadership. Minister of Youth Dr. Jamila Bio also commended the Governor for mainstreaming gender inclusion in political leadership.
Governor AbdulRazaq’s efforts extend beyond cabinet appointments. He has introduced legislation that mandates at least 35% gender parity in appointive political offices and the state bureaucracy, further cementing his commitment to gender equality.
The Governor received a standing ovation from the enthusiastic crowd when he was officially presented with the award. He expressed his gratitude to the organizers and the wives of the Governor for their efforts in promoting women’s empowerment.
During his speech, AbdulRazaq praised Women Radio for their dedication to spotlighting issues related to women, the girl child, and the community’s general well-being. The Governor also stressed the importance of supporting initiatives that encourage girls to pursue education and break down barriers. He mentioned programs like the Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) and a policy providing six-month maternity leave to empower women.
