Lagos lists 213 children for free limb surgery (Punch)
The Lagos State Government says 213 children have been listed to benefit from its Free Limb Deformity Corrective Surgery and Rehabilitation Programme, an intervention targeted at the treatment and rehabilitation of children with lower limb deformities.
The Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Health, Dr Olusegun Ogboye, said 60 out of that number had already been operated upon.
He disclosed this during a visit to the latest beneficiaries of the surgical intervention exercise at the Gbagada General Hospital on Wednesday “The limb deformity corrective surgery programme started in 2007 as a medical assistance programme for children with lower limb deformities that affect normal growth and function in children. No one can influence investigation into crashed aircraft – sources (Independent)
There is no one that can influence the investigation into the Jabiru J430 aircraft, which crashed on Tuesday afternoon at the Oba Akran, Ikeja area of Lagos, a source close to the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has said.
This is as Engr. Akin Olateru, the Director-General of NSIB has said that the two pilots that flew the aircraft were current, qualified and licensed to fly the aircraft brand.
A source close to one of the government agencies confided in Daily Independent on Wednesday evening that the air accident investigation could not be influenced by anyone as alleged in some quarters. Read more
Nigeria cuts power supply to Niger Republic (Vanguard)
Nigeria has disconnected the supply of 150 megawatts, MW of electricity daily to Niger as part of efforts by the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, to restore democracy in that nation.
The disconnection was effected by the Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, directly involved in the transmission of power on Tuesday night.

Surinamese jailed 13 years for drug offence (Nation)
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) yesterday said it has secured the conviction of a 34-year-old South American man from Suriname, Dadda Lorenzo Harvy Albert, who was arrested for bringing 117 parcels of cocaine weighing 9.9kg into the country.
He was arrested at the Port Harcourt International Airport, Rivers State with the drugs concealed in extra-large latex condoms packed inside bottles of 100ml body spray.
A statement by spokesman for the agency, Femi Babafemi, said the suspect claimed he departed his country, Suriname, in the Northeastern coast of South America on April 2 for Sao Paulo, Brazil en-route Nigeria, where he arrived on Friday, April 7, on board Qatar Airways flight in search of his long-lost Nigerian father called “Omini”. In a significant step towards consolidating its position as a governing party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) is gearing up to fill the vacant positions of National Chairman and National Secretary of the party on Thursday, August 3.
The decision was announced during the party’s National Caucus meeting, presided over by President Bola Tinubu at the State House Conference Centre on Wednesday night.

MSF treats 30,000 malnourished children in Katsina (ThisDay)
The Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) Wednesday said it has treated 30,000 malnourished children between January to June in Katsina State.
The MSF Health Promotion Manager, Elsie Siboe, who disclosed this in Katsina at an event to mark the 2023 World Breastfeeding Week, said the children were treated in eight health facilities in the state.
With the theme: ‘Enabling Breastfeeding; making a difference for working parents’, the event was organised by the Katsina State Government in collaboration with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). Read more

Ukraine says Russia hits key grain export route with drones in attack on “global food security” (CBS)
Russia unleashed a drone attack Wednesday on a key river port in southern Ukraine, again targeting vital infrastructure used to export grain from the country. The Reuters news agency quoted sources as saying operations at Ukraine’s Izmail port, just across the Danube river from Romania, had to be suspended due to damage caused by the strike.
The river port had become the primary route for grain exports from Ukraine since Russia once again blocked shipping from Ukraine’s Black Sea ports last month, when Moscow pulled out of a year-long agreement to enable the shipments to continue.
“Unfortunately, there are damages,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a social media post after the drone attack on Monday. “The most significant ones are in the south of the country. Russian terrorists have once again attacked ports, grain, and global food security.” Read more

As the 2023/24 season of the Nigeria Premier League is about to commence, ten stadiums have been shortlisted for live streaming and coverage of league games.

José María Olazábal named European vice-captain for Ryder Cup (ESPN)
José María Olazábal was named Wednesday as the European team’s fourth vice-captain for the Ryder Cup.
It’s the fourth time that Olazábal will serve as assistant — after 2008, ’10 and ’14 — and he was captain for Europe’s famous comeback win at Medinah in 2012. He also played for the European team on seven occasions from 1987-2006, winning 20 1/2 points.
