Lagos 2019: Group Mobilises 1m Votes for Ambode (ThisDay)
As the 2019 general elections draw closer, a group, Epe Division Indigenes has endorsed Governor Akinwunmi Ambode for another four-year term in Lagos State. This is coming as the group, which is representing all Epe indigenes expressed satisfaction on the performance of the Governor in the past four years, hence urged him to re-contest to perfect the good works that he has started. Speaking at a ‘One Million Man March’ organised for the Governor yesterday in Epe, Lagos state, the convener of Epe Division Indigenes, Princess Bolanle Kazeem noted that Epe indigenes are proud of Ambode, being the son of the land and are optimistic that he would drive Lagos to be a cynosure of the international communities. Recent developments in the Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) with the conduct of parallel state congress have caused unease in the political firmament as the 2019 elections draw nearer. There is currently an uneasy calm over an alleged plot to stop Governor Akinwunmi Ambode. Can the plot see the light of the day? Daily Trust on Sunday reports. Although the governor has not declared for second term, all indications point to his interest in that respect. His predecessors – Babatunde Raji Fashola and Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, the national leader of the party, spent eight years in office respectively. Sunbo Onitiri, a Lagos chief and political activist who played a role in the late Chief MKO Abiola’s Epetedo presidential declaration on June 11, 1994, has extolled President Muhammadu Buhari for bestowing on Abiola the highest honour in the country. According to Onitiri, Buhari has rekindled Nigerians’ hope in the sustainability of democracy in Nigeria with the decision to honour the “martyr of democracy”. He said in Lagos at the weekend, “This has shown that our struggles for democracy in Nigeria were not in vain”. Besides playing a role in the Epetedo declaration, Onitiri and Tunde Adejumo, a lawyer, had obtained the landmark judgment that enabled Nigerians to vote on June 12, 1993. Read more
Call Eko disco to order, hotelier tells NERC (Guardian)
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has been asked to call the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) to order over unwarranted disconnection of electricity supply to Samwholly Guest Hotel, Surulere. The manager of the hotel, Deborah Ogunbiyi, said that after several disagreements on over-billing with EKEDC, the hotel was migrated from a post-paid to pre-paid metre. She claimed that rather than end the crisis, the Orile District Unit kept coming up with excuses for disconnecting the hotel, alleging there had been a by-pass. This, Ogunbiyi denied. The latest issue, she said, led to the disconnection of the hotel for over two weeks. The hotel petitioned the headquarters of EKEDC. This led a delegation, independent of the Orile District Unit of EKEDC, to investigate the allegation. The team declared there had been no by-pass. Read more
Ambode, Tomori, others for Opelope Anointing Foundation anniversary (Tribune)
Epe, Lagos State will on July 7, come alive, as popular gospel minister, Evangelist Dunni Olanrewaju (a.k.a Opelope Anointing), will lead other dignitaries to the town, as part of the activities making the 8th year of the Opelope Anointing Foundation (OAF), targeted at giving back to the society, especially the underprivileged. The two-day event, which will feature the inauguration of the Opelope Anointing Fans Club, Epe chapter, on July 6, would be graced by the Lagos State governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode and his wife, Bolanle as the special guest of honour and chairperson of the day respectively. Lagos set to host MBFN 2018 (Tribune)
Zanzee Entertainment, the producer of the Most Beautiful Face in Nigeria (MBFN) and Mr Tourism in Nigeria, has announced that this year’s edition of the event will hold at Bespoke Event centre where on June 9. According to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Chuks Anuzionwu, the edition is themed Beautygiveback, which means that each of the 15 top finalists will have a pet project and donations which will be given to orphanage homes and motherless babies to put a smile on their faces. He added that the edition is planned to be unique and show the world that beauty pageant is not all about displaying beauty but the intellectual rigour put in innovating pet projects that will give back and contribute to societal development. Heart Disease: Death rate in Men doubles after 40 – Cardiologist (Leadership)
Prof. Janet Ajuluchukwu, College of Medicine, Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba says men have more heart problems than women with death rates doubling after age 40. Ajuluchukwu made this assertion while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in an interview on Saturday in Lagos. The professor said researches carried out proved that many men do not go to the hospital until too late and with late diagnosis, they were more prone to heart problems. The cardiologist stressed the need for men to go for regular checkups because conditions such as hypertension do not come with obvious signs. Read more
MTN Tours Lagos Streets, Sensitises on Wellnes (ThisDay)
As part of activities lined up for this year’s ‘21 Days of Y’ello Care’ initiative, a telecommunication company, MTN Nigeria has taken to Lagos streets to enlighten Nigerians on rhesus factor as well as situations leading to child mortality. The staff of the company in their yellow T-shirt, walked in droves along the streets of Lagos Island as they engaged motorists, passersby, hawkers and others in a face-to-face health interaction. Fliers were also distributed as others entertained onlookers with their elegant dancing steps to drive home their messages. To the company, its health focus this year was prompted by high child mortality rate and the need to promote awareness on rhesus incompatibility. Read more
LASTMA sacks 24 officers (Punch)
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority has dismissed 24 of its personnel in the past two years over misconduct. The authority has also lost about 10 personnel, while others suffered injuries—with some resulting in amputation in the course of carrying out their duties. The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of LASTMA, Mr. Christian Olakpe, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria. Olakpe said his agency had also punished erring officers and men in some other ways including suspension, rank reduction and isolation. Read more
NURTW taxi drivers petition Lagos govt, IG over police ‘harrassment’ (Vanguard)
Members of National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, Taxi Sector have asked Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State and the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, to rescue them from Lagos State Taxi and Cab Operators Association or they would be forced to go to court and seek redress. Ambode assures Nigerians Super Eagles will not Disappoint (Independent)
Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode has assured Nigerians that the Super Eagles would make the country as the team begins campaign for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. Ambode who on Friday led a high-powered Nigerian government delegation to the World Cup in Russia, along with sports minister, Barrister Solomon Dalung and minister for Works, Power and Housing, Babatunde Raji Fashola. Lagos residents hail creation of viewing centres (Punch)
Residents of Lagos State on Saturday commended the state government’s decision to set up six viewing centres across the state to enable them to watch the 2018 World Cup matches. Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode had last month promised to set up viewing centres in key locations that would afford residents the opportunity to watch all the 64 matches of the tournament in a secured environment. The six centres are at the Campos Mini-stadium, Lagos Island, the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, Abesan Estate in Alimosho, Naval Yard, Ajegunle, Bishop Aggrey School, Mushin and the Epe Recreation Centre, Epe. World Cup: Businessmen say tournament boosting profits (Guardian)
Some businessmen on Friday in Lagos said that the ongoing 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia is driving their business in the right manner and helping them to make more profits. They told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that there were signs already that business would boom as they were receiving new customers daily. Erick Awogu, who owns Ricalours Restaurant in Okota, said that he had been experiencing more football fans trooping in to watch live games. According to him, the football fiesta is the right season to make more money. “The World Cup brings so much to my business and I am just ready to satisfy my expected numerous customers,’’ Awogu said.
