The pastor of a Pentecostal church in Onpanu, Lagos, Abraham Olaluwoye, has been remanded in jail for allegedly raping a 27-year-old lady (name withheld).
The survivor, who spoke with City Round, said the incident happened on September 16 when she was called by the cleric to come to the church so he could help her get a job.
She said, “When I told my parents and brother, they said I shouldn’t go. That Monday afternoon, when I was going to fetch water I saw pastor Abraham and I greeted him and went my way, but later I saw his missed calls on my phone. Read more
Court sacks all NNPP candidates for Kano LG elections (Channels)
In a dramatic turn of events, a Federal High Court in Kano has sacked all 44 chairmanship and councillorship candidates of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) for Saturday’s local government elections.
The ruling was delivered on Friday by Justice Simon Amobeda following a case filed by Engineer Muhammad Babayo and a faction of the NNPP against the party’s leadership.
Justice Amobeda ruled that the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) should accept a new list of candidates submitted by the faction led by the recognised State Chairman, Dalhatu Shehu Usman, in accordance with the party’s constitution. Read more

Kebbi State Area Command of Nigeria Customs Service has disclosed that it raked in over N36,000,000 revenue from borders.
The Command Comptroller, Earnest Ihejirike, said that the command, in a joint operation with whirlwind, has succeeded in intercepting outlawed goods coming through the borders.
They include 180 pieces of donkey skin, foreign rice, bales of used clothes, tourist cars and some medicaments believed to have been illegally smuggled into the country. Read more

A labourer, Sunday Emmanuel, has allegedly macheted his wife simply identified as Linda to death at Idanre Local Government Area of Ondo State.
According to a police report, Emmanuel, who resides at Ogbeni Camp in the Ofosu area of Idanre, also allegedly hacked his 3-year-old son on the head with the intent to kill him.
The toddler, identified as Sunday, was said to have sustained a life-threatening injury. Read more

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has denied reaching any agreement with the University of Lagos (UNILAG) management regarding an annual increase in tuition and hostel accommodation fees.
In a statement signed by NANS Senate President, Afeez Akinteye, on Friday, the student body refuted claims that student representatives had accepted the proposal for fee increases. NANS emphasized its opposition to any hike in tuition and accommodation fees at UNILAG.
NANS also issued a warning, threatening to convene a National Congress on the UNILAG campus if the university management proceeds with the fee hike. A Federal High Court in Abuja has rejected the request by Rivers State Government to stay proceedings in a suit seeking to stop allocation of funds to all the Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Rivers State.
In a ruling on Friday, Justice Joyce Abdulmalik held that the application for stay made by lawyer to the Government of Rivers State, Gordy Uche (SAN) was frivolous, vexatious, unwarranted and mischievous.
The ruling was given during Friday’s proceedings in a suit, marked: CA/ABJ/CV/1197/2024 by the Rivers State House of Assembly and Honourable Martin Amaewhule. Read more

A Nigerian Naval personnel has gunned down his colleague during an argument in Zamfara state.
The incident reportedly happened in Dansadau, Maru Local Government Area (LGA) of Zamfara on Friday.
The personnel who were both serving at Operation Sheto Yanma, were said to be having an argument after which the officer, identified as Akila, shot the deceased at a close range.
Confirming the incident, Maj. Gen. Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, said investigation had commenced to unravel the circumstances surrounding the deceased’s death. Read more

Victims of Uganda’s notorious Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) said on Friday that they were disappointed in the sentence handed by judges to a former commander.
Thomas Kwoyelo was given 40 years in prison for war crimes including murder, rape, enslavement, pillaging, torture, and kidnapping.

On Thursday, Oct. 24, Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer, who dismissed the case with prejudice on the third day of Baldwin’s trial in July, wrote a new ruling rebuking special prosecutor Kari T. Morrissey for raising “arguments previously made” in court and new arguments that prosecutors “elected not to raise earlier” in the motion.
The judge also wrote that Morrissey’s “permissible time period for initiating an appeal ended on Aug. 30, 2024.” Read more

The Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh dies at 84 (NPR)
Phil Lesh, bassist and founding member of countercultural rock band The Grateful Dead, has died. He was 84 years old. His family posted the news on Lesh’s official Instagram page.
Born in Berkeley, Calif., in 1940, Lesh was initially drawn to classical music. He played violin as a child before turning his attention to the trumpet, which he studied throughout high school and his time at the College of San Mateo. In the early ‘60s, he met banjo player Jerry Garcia, who later asked him to join his rock band, The Warlocks, as their bassist — an instrument Lesh did not play. He accepted nonetheless, and in 1965, The Grateful Dead was born, with Lesh finding his footing in the improvisation-driven group as he went. Read more

Jack Jones, a Grammy-winning crooner known for The Love Boat television show theme song, has died. He was 86.
Jones died Wednesday night at a hospital in Rancho Mirage, California, after battling leukemia for more than two years, according to a statement from his manager, Milt Suchin.
Jones began his singing career in the 1950s and in the 1960s won two Grammy Awards for best vocal performance, one on the song “Lollipops And Roses” and one on the song “Wives and Lovers.” Read more

Israel announced the launch of “precise strikes” on military targets in Iran on Saturday, in retaliation for attacks against it, as Iranian state media reported several explosions around the capital.
“In response to months of continuous attacks from the regime in Iran against the State of Israel – right now the Israel Defense Forces (Israeli military) is conducting precise strikes on military targets in Iran,” the military said in a statement.
