Lagos: Conversion of school sports fields to bonded terminal continues despite order (Guardian)

Months after Lagos State governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, condemned landowners in Ijegun, Amuwo-Odofin council area for selling plots of land used for bonded terminals and tank farms in a residential area, a school complex in Mile 2 area, in the same local government area, has been converted to a bonded terminal.

While on a visit to the site of the Soba explosion recently, a resident had asked Sanwo-Olu when the illegal tank farms around Ijegun would be shut to prevent another calamity, as witnessed in Soba.

The governor had argued that those who sold the land to those who built the tank farms should be held responsible, not the government. Read more

Drama as Lagos lawmaker, Osun walks out on Speaker (Tribune)

A Lawmaker representing Lagos Mainland 1 at the Lagos state House of Assembly, Hon. Moshood Oshun has walked out on the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa over allocation of a seat during the plenary session on Tuesday.

The Speaker had directed the Lawmaker to take his allocated seat instead of the one he was sitting on.

Upon this directive, the lawmaker said, he had earlier complained that the seat allocated to him was not convenient.

The Speaker, thereafter, told Oshun, If everyone chooses his or her seat, how would the chamber looked. Read more

The RCEA Bin Recycler Project, led by Rtn. Pallavi Kaurani and supported by Rtn. Shweta Srivastava, saw residents of LSDPC flats at Adeola Odeku, in Victoria Island, being educated on the need for waste segregation. Read more

CP orders manhunt for Okadamen who killed Lagos businessman (Punch)

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, has ordered a manhunt for the motorcyclists, who allegedly killed a Lagos businessman, Yamah Usman, in the Elepe area of Ikorodu.

This followed PUNCH Metro’s report that Yamah was stoned to death by an angry mob of motorcyclists for hitting a partially sighted man with his vehicle around the Ikorodu Garage last Monday.

The motorcyclists were said to have reacted violently towards Yamah after the Edo State indigene hit the partially sighted man, and out of fear for his life, he reportedly fled from the scene, but the motorcyclists pursued him and intercepted him at Elepe on the Ijede Road, where he was stoned to death. Police parade man for allegedly killing mother of three over sex (Nation)

The Police in Oyo State on Tuesday paraded a 26-year-old man for allegedly killing a 30-year-old mother of three who denied him sex.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the suspect was one of the 33 paraded by the command at its headquarters in Eleyele, Ibadan.

NAN reports that other suspects were paraded for offences ranging from murder and kidnapping to armed robbery and conspiracy. Read more

Ogun suspected fake lawyer defrauds client of N300,000 (Punch)

Men of the Ogun State Police Command have arrested a self-acclaimed lawyer, Elijah Ojo, for allegedly duping a client  into parting with N300,000.

Ojo was reported to have collected the money from a client to perfect her bail condition, but   bolted afterwards.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Abimbola Oyeyemi, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday. Read more

Senate urges FG to subsidise electricity for Nigerians (Guardian)

The Senate on Tuesday asked the Federal Government to subsidise electricity for Nigerians in a bid to alleviate the proposed hike in electricity tariff which had been deferred to next year.

Chairman Senate Committee on Power, Sen. Gabriel Suswam made the call while briefing newsmen in Abuja.

Hong Kong is marking 23 years since British rule ended as a new “anti-protest” law, imposed by Beijing, comes into effect.

The national security law targets secession, subversion and terrorism with punishments up to life in prison.

Coronavirus: EU to allow in visitors from 15 ‘safe’ countries (BBC)

The EU has decided that from Wednesday EU borders will be reopened to citizens from 15 non-EU countries, including Canada, Morocco and Australia, but not the US, Brazil and Russia.

China is on the list, but subject to a reciprocal agreement, still pending.

The unanimous decision by the European Council is not legally binding, so states can choose not to open up to all those countries. Read more

Facebook bans ‘violent’ Boogaloo-linked network (BBC)

Facebook says it has removed and banned hundreds of accounts connected to a “violent” and “anti-government” US movement.

It said the network was loosely linked to the broader far-right “Boogaloo” movement but was distinct because it actively sought to commit violence.

Armed Boogaloo members have been seen at recent US protests.

The move comes as Facebook faces a boycott from advertisers over hate speech on the platform. Read more

Carl Reiner: US comedy star dies at 98 (BBC)

Carl Reiner, who helped create The Dick Van Dyke Show and acted in films like Ocean’s Eleven, has died aged 98.

The prolific writer, comedian, director and actor also directed several films including Steve Martin vehicles The Jerk (1979) and All of Me (1984).

He was in 2001’s Ocean’s Eleven and its two sequels as conman Saul Bloom, and had a double act with Mel Brooks. Read more

Mississippi governor signs historic bill removing Confederate symbol from flag (France24)

The governor of the southern US state of Mississippi signed a bill Tuesday removing the Confederate battle standard from the state flag, after nationwide protests drew renewed attention to symbols of the United States’ racist past.

“This is not a political moment, it is a solemn occasion to come together as a Mississippi family, reconcile, and move forward together,” Governor Tate Reeves wrote on Facebook.

Mississippi is the only American state to incorporate the Confederate standard on its official flag, after nearby Georgia dropped it in 2003. Read more

Convicted Kenyan rugby players to be retried (BBC)

Former Kenya Rugby Sevens players Frank Wanyama and Alex Olaba will be stand for retrial after winning an appeal over their rape conviction in 2019.

Kenyan high court judge Grace Ngenye Macharia ordered the retrail after quashing their 15-year prison sentences.

The pair were serving the sentences for a gang-rape incident involving a musician in February 2018. Read more

CAF postpones 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (Nation)

The Confederation of African Football Executive Committee on Tuesday announced the postponement of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.

It said the competition will now hold in Cameroon in January 2022.

The decision was reached after the committee met via video-conference to discuss the future of competitions and other related issues amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

“After consultation with stakeholders and taking into consideration the current global situation, the tournament has been rescheduled for January 2022.

“The date for the final tournament and the remaining matches of the qualifiers will be communicated in due course,” the football body said in a statement. Read more
