Lagos Court convicts cosmetic surgeon over client’s death (Sun)
The Federal High Court in Lagos State has convicted Dr. Anuoluwapo Adepoju, a cosmetic surgeon and founder of MedContour Services Ltd., for her involvement in the failed plastic surgery that led to the death of Nneka Onwuzuligbo in 2020, according to a report by FIJ.
The conviction was announced by Babatunde Irukera, the former Director-General of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), who took to Twitter to share the news. “Today is a day of pride for me that I personally prosecuted Anu Adepoju and her medical practice. Though I’ve left, the case has ended in a conviction, strengthening the accountability framework for all in society, professionals or otherwise,” Irukera tweeted.
Dr. Adepoju was convicted on all five counts charged by the FCCPC. The case was presided over by Justice Mohammed Liman. Read more
Tears, as Jnr. Pope laid to rest in Enugu (Vanguard)
The sleepy town of Uwala Abaka, Ukehe, in Nsukka, Igboetiti Local Government Area of Enugu State, was enveloped by sadness and grief, as the remains of one of their illustrious sons, actor John Odonwodo, popularly known as Junior Pope was laid to rest.
The burial rites commenced at 10 am with a commendation mass at St. Peter’s Catholic Parish, Ukehe, and lying-in-state at his father’s compound, where family members, well-wishers, colleagues and friends had the final glimpse of the late actor before the body was moved to a private venue for internment at about 1.30 pm.
The atmosphere at the burial ceremony was somber as colleagues and fans gathered to pay their final respects to the late actor. Read more

Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja has denied bail to Tigran Gambaryan, an executive of Binance Holdings Limited.
The judge determined that Gambaryan is likely to abscond if released on bail.

A new mother, Susan Ubangha, has cried for help over her deteriorating health condition after giving birth at the Alimosho General Hospital in the Igando area of Lagos State.
This is as she alleged that her husband used the money meant for her medical bill to buy a phone and a dog.
Ubangha, in a lengthy post on her X handle, stated that her ordeal started in the weeks leading to the delivery of her baby as she started to experience sudden and severe shortness of breath. Read more

Kwara State Police Command has arrested five health workers over alleged mysterious disappearance of umbilical cord and placenta of a newly born baby in Oke-Ero local government area.
It was gathered that the incident happened at the cottage hospital in Iloffa last Sunday.
The suspects, Daily Trust learnt, who are currently being detained in Ilorin after interrogation on Thursday include one Dr Ajibola, nurses Rukayat Adeloye, Aishat Awolusi, Peace Alabi and Toyin Adewunmi, a ward attendant. Read more
NJC recommends appointment of 86 judges (Nation)
The National Judicial Council (NJC) has recommended the appointment of 86 Justices and judges for the Court of Appeal, High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Sharia Courts of Appeal, and Customary Courts of Appeal of states across the country.
The NJC, at its 105th meeting held between May 15 and 16, took the decision after considering the recommendation of its Interview Committee on Appointment of Judicial Officers of all Superior Courts of Record in Nigeria.
According to a statement issued on Friday, May 17, by NJC’s Director (Information), Soji Oye, the council recommended the appointment of 22 Justices for the Court of Appeal. Read more
7 die, 16 injured in Ibadan auto crash (Leadership)
At least seven people have reportedly lost their lives in a road accident that occurred along the Iseyin-Ibadan Road in Oyo State.
The accident which involved two vehicles also led to other passengers sustaining various degrees of injuries.

For his new movie, which Coppola has dedicated decades of his life to creating, the filmmaker circumvented the traditional Hollywood system. While this came at great personal expense, reportedly costing Coppola over $120 million, it did award him with creative freedom. Although, most directors can’t afford this luxury.
Coppola first conceived of Megalopolis while making his celebrated Vietnam War film Apocalypse Now over four decades ago. The project finally came to life when Coppola opted to fund it himself, which he believes could be the way forward for creators. Read more

Putin says Russia seeks “buffer zone” in Kharkiv; drone attacks knock out power in Crimea (UPI)
Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday said that Russia does not have plans to seize Kharkiv but instead seeks to establish a “buffer” zone in the northeastern Ukrainian region.
Asked about seizing Kharkiv, Putin said that “there are no such plans today” while placing the blame on Ukraine for fighting in the region, Russia’s state-run TASS news agency reported.
“Now about what is happening in the Kharkiv direction, They are also to blame for that because they shelled and continue shelling, unfortunately, residential areas of borderline territories including Belgorod. Civilians are being killed there. It is all obvious. They are bombarding directly the center of the city and residential quarters,” Putin said. Read more
New Caledonia state of emergency comes into effect (DW)
A state of emergency came into effect in the French Pacific territory of New Caledonia on Thursday as the island saw its third day of rioting following violence that led to the deaths of four people, including a French police officer.
Riots broke out on Tuesday after lawmakers in France adopted a new bill allowing French residents who have lived in New Caledonia for 10 years to vote in provincial elections. Local leaders are concerned this will impact the influence of the Indigenous Kanak peoples’ vote.
Since 5 a.m. local time (1800 GMT Wednesday), a state of emergency came into force which is set to last for 12 days. It gives authorities the power to ban gatherings and restrict movement across the island, which lies around 1,500 kilometers (932 miles) east of Australia — and almost 17,000 kilometers from France. Brazil have been named hosts of the 2027 Women’s World Cup after beating a joint bid by Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany (BNG).
They became the first nation to be handed the rights by an open vote, with member associations voting 119 to 78 in favour of Brazil at Fifa’s congress in Bangkok on Friday.
