The Lagos Government on Tuesday inaugurated a new board for the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja to boost service delivery in the institution. Inaugurating the board, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris, told the members to support the institution in formulating policies and decisions in line with the hospital’s vision and mission. A prosecution witness, Edwin Uduji, yesterday, gave details of how billionaire kidnap kingpin, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike, known popularly as Evans, threatened to collect a fine of $10,000 for any fake 100 dollar bill. Uduji, an elder brother to a kidnap victim, Mr. James Uduji, told this to a Lagos High Court sitting in Igbosere, while giving evidence at the trial of Evans, the Anambra State-born high-profile kidnapper. Evans Evans is standing trial on two separate charges, bordering on conspiracy to kidnap, kidnapping and attempted murder, before Justice Adedayo Akintoye. Read more
CAN dares Buhari to prove appointments are unbiased (Guardian)
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) yesterday dared the Federal Government to produce facts proving its appointments are not lopsided. “We are disappointed and shocked that despite appeals to the president to break the domination of the security apparatus by people of the same religion and language in a multi-religious and multi-ethnic nation, Buhari has turned a deaf ear,” CAN said, regretting that his recent appointments neither featured a Christian nor a southerner. Court orders arrest of Sen Uzodinma (Nation)
A court in Abuja has ordered the police to arrest Senator Hope Uzodinma (representing Orlu Zone, Imo West), and produce him before September 25 this year. Justice Abdulwahab Mohammed of the Grade 1 Area Court, Kubwa Abuja gave the order on Tuesday following Uzodinma’s failure to attend court to respond to a direct criminal complaint pending against him. The meeting of the National Assembly Committee on Electoral Matters on Monday to correct contentious provisions of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill may have ended in a stalemate. Thai court rejects lawsuit against company of Leicester City owner (Guardian)
A Thai court Tuesday dismissed a lawsuit accusing duty-free giant King Power, the firm that owns Leicester City Football Club, of owing the state more than $430 million in unpaid revenues. Spain taxman drops accusations against James Rodriguez (Guardian)
Spain’s taxman has dropped accusations that Colombia’s James Rodriguez evaded millions of euros in taxes when he played at Real Madrid, the El Mundo daily reported Tuesday. The newspaper revealed in July that tax authorities accused the Bayern Munich midfielder of having evaded 6.35 million euros ($7.4 million) in taxes and would have to pay that amount plus a fine and interests for a total of 11.65 million euros. Landlady in court over alleged assault on lawyer (Vanguard)
A 45-year-old landlady, Grace Okoro, was on Tuesday arraigned in an Ogudu Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, over alleged assault on a legal practitioner. Okoro, who resides at Ketu area of Lagos, is facing a charge of assault. The prosecutor, Sgt. Lucky Ihiehie, told the court that the accused committed the alleged offence on Aug. 24 at her residence.
