Lagos: Police barred from operating in mufti (Vanguard)

The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Police Command, Mr. Edgal Imohimi, yesterday, warned that “any policeman who carries out operational duties in mufti will be sanctioned.” He said this at the 3rd Stakeholders Security Meeting on Security Policing, organised by the Area ‘D’ Command, Mushin, with the theme: ‘Policing the Community by the Community.’ To march action with words, the Command boss disclosed  that the two policemen, who allegedly assaulted a lawyer last week in Ikoyi area of Lagos, would be demoted in ranks, for wearing plain clothes to effect the arrest of the legal practitioner. Save Lagos from coastal erosion, NCF urges FG (Nation)

The Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF), yesterday appealed to the Federal Government to save Lagos State from being wiped out by coastline erosion. The foundation made the call at a conference in Lagos on the dangers of a fast eastward ocean current eating up several meters of land daily on the Lekki and Victoria Island axis. NCF’s chairman, Chief Ede Dafinone, said several coastal communities had been washed away and if no immediate action was taken, the Lagos Island would be underwater by 2030 and the whole of Lagos by 2050. According to him, the problem of coastline erosion started during the colonial era when mounds  were created to protect the Apapa-Wharf. Read more

 Apapa Gridlock: NPA suspends Maersk, Cosco, 2 other shipping lines for 10 days (Vanguard)

Following the protracted strike by truck drivers at the Lagos Port Complex Apapa over movement of empty containers, the Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA, yesterday slammed a 10 day suspension on Maerskline shipping and three other shipping lines. The other shipping lines affected by the suspension are Cosco Shipping, APS and Lansal. NPA stated that the suspension takes effect from today. A statement signed by Assistant General Manager, Corporate and Strategic Communications, Isah Suwaid, noted that “the suspension follows the Authority’s checks which revealed that the four companies have failed to fully comply with the directive to acquire and operate holding bays as they have either failed to utilise their holding bays at all or do not have adequate capacity to handle the volume of containers that they deal with. Afolabi Orieton Livingstone and other contestants for Amuwo Odofin State Constituency II yesterday showcased themselves to the PDP party faithful at a mega Assembly rally held at Amuwo Odofin constituency II. The rally that attracted the Chairman of PDP Lagos State, Hon. Adegoke Salvado is aimed at unifying aggrieved members in the constituency and creating awareness of PDP present in the constituency and its environs. Akoka Pollution: Total denies neglecting Community (ThisDay)

Few months after the reported incident of accidental fuel leakage at Total Filling station in Akoka area of Lagos State, which resulted in pollution of the water sources of some houses in the area, officials of the company have said they have since done all that was necessary to bring the environment to its original state, contrary to reports making the rounds. Recall that some national dailies, not Thisday, had earlier reported how some residents complained about being allegedly neglected by the owners of the filling station, despite the environmental and health hazards of the incident. Reports from various expert agencies, presented by the managers, indicated that the community can now go about their daily business without fear or concern. Besides, some dwellers in the area also acknowledged to Thisday the swift and consistent response of the station managers towards the crisis which occurred on August 13, 2017. Read more

Black Foundation opens in Lagos, set to strengthen education, eradicate poverty (Guardian)

In a bid to support out of school children and the less privileged, popular music teacher Emmanuel Akapo has set up the Black Fragrance Foundation. The unveiling ceremony, which was held recently in Surulere, Lagos, was an opportunity for the founder to speak on the vision and mission of the foundation, which aims to bring succor to the needy. Akapo informed that the Black Fragrance’s vision is to contribute significantly to the global effort to end poverty in Africa, and to secure a brighter future for children, through access to quality and inclusive education. Well the writers’ village is about 40% complete. There’s still a lot of work to be done. The foundation has been raised up to the lintel and decking levels. The main auditorium is being prepared for decking now as we speak. The infrastructure, road networks and gate are being worked on and we hope that at least, the carcass of the building will be ready before the end of this year and then the interior and getting ready for commissioning by the grace of God, by May next year. AIB, UNILAG seal deal on metallurgical research (Punch)

The Accident Investigation Bureau and the University of Lagos have signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the latter to use AIB’s metallurgical laboratory at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja for research. The agreement was signed in Lagos on Thursday and witnessed by the Vice-Chancellor, UNILAG, Prof Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, and his management team. The AIB Commissioner, Akin Olateru, said the partnership would be beneficial to the agency and the university, adding that with adequate research, the country would record rapid growth. Read more

FMBN’s 112 units for Lagos market (Nation)

The 112-unit ministerial pilot Sedona housing scheme of the Federal Ministry of Power, Works, Housing will soon be inaugurated by Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN) Managing Director, Mr. Ahmed Dangiwa, has said. He spoke at the estate site while leading the bank’s board members on the inspection tour of the project. The project, located in Igbogbo, Ikorodu, a Lagos suburb, is part of efforts aimed at addressing the housing deficit in the country. Lagos prison provost arrested for drugs (SUN)

Nemesis, a recoil of nature, has finally caught up with the Provost, Nigerian Prisons Service, Lagos State Command, Mr. Wale Iseagba, who was allegedly nabbed with some illicit drugs, which he intended to sell to some inmates through a point man in Ikoyi Prison. He was arrested on Wednesday morning, following a week long monitoring of his activities. Prior to his arrest, his lifestyle, which suggested that he was living above his income, aroused the curiosity of his colleagues, who then complained to higher authorities. Read more

Customer kills bar attendant over N250 (Punch)

The family of a bar attendant on Surulere Street, Dopemu, Lagos, Ikechukwu Eguzouwa, has been thrown into mourning after his tragic death. Eguzouwa was reportedly killed by a customer, Akeem Bakare, during an argument over payment for a bottle of alcohol. Saturday Punch learnt that Bakare had ordered for the drink to cool nerves during the Russia 2018 World Cup match between Nigeria and Argentina when the incident happened. The deceased’s colleague, Abel Daniel, was said to have approached the attacker after the match requesting the money for the drink. Our correspondent learnt that an argument broke out when the tricycle rider claimed that a friend, who also visited the facility, had paid for him. Read more

‘Lagos World Cup viewing centres a good initiative’ (Guardian)

Former Internationals have urged all football-loving Lagosians to be at the eight viewing centres to enjoy the fun the final of the Russia 2018 World Cup between France and Croatia will bring by watching on the large screen provided by the state and its partner. The centres were established by the Lagos State Government through the Lagos State Sports Commission with the support of International Breweries Plc, for Lagosians to be in the ambience of the World Cup, which ends tomorrow in Russia. Football Dance Competition debuts in Lagos (ThisDay)

The Lagos State Government through the Lagos State Sports Commission has endorsed the maiden Football Dance Competition scheduled to hold at the Teslim Balogun Stadium from August 29. The event, which was supported by the Lagos State Football Association, is designed for talented amateur footballers to showcase their creativity with dance and get rewards.
