Lagos releases guidelines on abortion (Vanguard)
The Lagos State Government has developed and launched guidelines for the development of safe and lawful abortion services within the ambit of the state’s criminal law.
The Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Health, Dr Olusegun Ogboye, presented a 40-page policy document tagged “Lagos State Guidelines on Safe Termination of Pregnancy for Legal Indications” at a stakeholders’ engagement on Tuesday.
Dr. Ogboye said the need was borne out of the desire for evidence-based data and information for health workers in public and private sectors.
Ogboye explained that while therapeutic termination of pregnancy is permissible under the law in Lagos State, the post-procedure absence of clear guidelines has stalled the effective implementation at appropriate levels of care resulting in preventable deaths. Read more
Lagos to reward 12 outstanding teachers with cars (Punch)
The Lagos State Government has said it would reward the efforts of 12 teachers who have put in their best to raise the quality of teaching and learning in the state in 2021.
The state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Gbenga Omotoso, in a statement on Tuesday, noted that this recognition is part of the Annual Education Merit Awards initiated by the state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
Omotoso added that the committee members are private education administrators and public sector technocrats, stating that 3,529 applicants were screened and 22 semi-finalists were selected who will compete for 12 cars for the 2021 awards for outstanding teachers. Read more
Hajj: Lagos to refund intending pilgrims as Saudi declines additional slots (DailyTrust)
Lagos State Government has disclosed its decision to refund intending pilgrims who were unable to make it to this year’s hajj, following the inability of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) to secure proposed slots for them.
Commissioner for Home Affairs, Prince Anofi Elegushi, disclosed this while giving update on the current Hajj operations being carried out by the State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board.
He assured that the State Government would make the process seamless for intending pilgrims who wish to seek a refund.
He recalled that the COVID-19 pandemic did not allow airlifting of pilgrims since 2020, giving rise to an increase in backlog.
“When Saudi Arabia authorities gave the go ahead for pilgrims to be airlifted this year 2022, we had over 4,000 intending pilgrims that have registered with the State. A total of 1,562 slots were allocated to Lagos State by NAHCON and these were used up immediately by the State contingent. Read more
Population Commission plans trial census in nine Lagos councils (Punch)
The National Population Commission has commenced a training workshop to conduct trial census in nine local government areas across Lagos State.
The Federal Commissioner of NPC, Lagos State, Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, disclosed this in a statement on Monday.
According to a statement made available to The PUNCH, Salu-Hundeyin made this known during a 12-day training to equip 104 field personnel, consisting of facilitators, supervisors and enumerators drawn mainly from communities within the selected areas.
He said, “The trial census, which is a dress rehearsal, is to evaluate all aspects of the census operations before the main census on a limited scale. The specific objectives are to assess the quality of the evaluation area maps, determine requisite educational qualifications for enumerators, estimate the workload of the enumerators and logistics support for the main census among others. Disquiet in Lagos PDP over choice of deputy governorship candidate (DailyTrust)
There is a growing disquiet among the political leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos State over the choice of the deputy governorship candidate of the party for the 2023 general elections.
The Lead Visioner, Lagos4Lagos Movement, Abdul-Lateef Olajide Adediran (Jandor), who won the ticket of the party is yet to pick his running mate.
The ruling All Progressives Congress is expected to retain the Babajide Sanwo-Olu/Obafemi Hamzat ticket, which won the 2019 election.
The PDP had, last Wednesday, commenced the screening of nominees for deputy governorship positions. The party pencilled five nominees.
JAMB laments lack of transparency in admission process (Punch)
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has accused some tertiary institutions of learning in the country of being in the habit of opting for ‘crooked options’ by failing to disclose admission offers granted to candidates.
The PUNCH reports that JAMB had, in 2021, said it uncovered no fewer than 706,189 undisclosed admission offers granted to candidates by tertiary institutions.
According to the board, the admission offers granted were done outside of the Central Admissions Processing System.
The board’s Registrar, Prof Ishaq Oloyede, in JAMB’s latest bulletin made available to The PUNCH on Tuesday, said, “It is disheartening today to still see some institutions opting for the crooked option that lacks transparencies or accountability through undisclosed admission offers.” Read more

Zamfara Assembly passes banditry, terrorism bill

2 suspects killed, 6 officers injured in Canada bank robbery (Guardian)
Two suspected bank robbers were killed Tuesday during a shootout with police in western Canada that left six officers injured, local authorities said, adding that a possible third suspect was still missing.
“This remains an ongoing police incident with the heavy police presence in the area,” said Saanich police chief Dean Duthie at a press conference.
Around 11:00 am (1800 GMT), two armed suspects entered a bank in Saanich, a city of approximately 114,000 outside the British Columbia capital of Victoria, police said in a statement.
“Multiple officers responded to the scene and encountered the armed suspects who fired at police. Two suspects were shot by police and died at the scene,” the statement said, adding that no bank employees or members of the public were physically injured.
“It’s hard because we have members in the hospital right now suffering from serious injuries,” Duthie said. Read more

Ray Donovan actress Mary Mara, 61, drowned while swimming, it has been reported.
Mara, who appeared in several other TV shows, including Law and Order, apparently drowned while swimming on Sunday (June 26) in the St. Lawrence River off Cape Vincent in New York.
She is best known for her main role as Inspector Bryn Carson on Nash Bridges and primetime dramas ER and Law & Order, as well as playing Mrs. Sullivan on Ray Donovan in 2013.

U.K. broadcaster Channel 4 has commissioned a two-part documentary about the sex crime allegations against Kevin Spacey.
The House of Cards actor is currently facing multiple charges of sexual assault in the U.K. courts, with a trial likely to be set for the end of the year or early 2023.
On Monday, Channel 4 bosses announced they had commissioned the new documentary, Spacey Unmasked, from director Kira Phillips, producer Kathy Haywood, and executive producers Dorothy Byrne and Mike Lerner.
“Kevin Spacey is one of the most highly honoured and admired actors of our age,” Byrne said in a statement. “His brilliance has won him two Oscars and multiple other awards. Music Exec Chaka Zulu, longtime manager of Ludacris, wounded in Atlanta shooting (People)
A music executive and manager of Ludacris was shot Sunday night in Atlanta.
The Atlanta Police Department confirms that Chaka Zulu was wounded in the shooting, which occurred around 11:35 p.m. Two other men were also shot.
The shooting happened in a parking lot outside a restaurant in Buckhead, an Atlanta neighborhood, WSB-TV reports.
All three men were transported to a local hospital, where one died, according to the APD. Read more

Okagbare: Nigeria disqualified from World Championships women’s relay (Punch)
Nigeria have lost their potential qualification place for the women’s 4×100-metre relay at next month’s World Athletics Championships in the United States of America.
Head of the Athletics Integrity Unit, Brett Clothier, made this known in a statement on Monday.
According to him, this is because Blessing Okagbare, who was part of the team that secured Nigeria’s qualification, was found to have committed anti-doping rule violations.
