Lagos senator hails APC convention (Punch)
The senator representing Lagos East Senatorial District, Gbenga Ashafa, has expressed satisfaction in the convention of the All Progressive Congress, which he described as successful. Ashafa also congratulated President Muhammadu Buhari, and members of the APC in a statement on Monday. Ashafa said, “I am impressed with the turn out from all geo-political zones of the country and the unity which was displayed by all members during the convention. 90 Lagos workers get merit awards (Nation)
No fewer than 90 Lagos State Government workers yesterday got Merit Awards for their outstanding performance. They received the awards at the grand finale of the Public Service Week held at the Adeyemi Bero Auditorium, Alausa, Ikeja. Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode said his administration’s success was the hard work of civil servants, who showed positive attitude to work and commitment to the government’s vision for good governance in a Smart City. Represented by his deputy, Dr Oluranti Adebule, Ambode said the government would continue to play its role by providing everything to make them effective and efficient in the discharge of their responsibilities. Lagos House Commends Buhari for Honouring Abiola (Independent)
Mudashiru Obasa, Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, on Monday commended the Federal Government under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari for recognising the late MKO Abiola for his struggles for democracy in Nigeria. Deliberating on the matter, which was brought under the issue of urgent public importance by Sanai Agunbiade, the House Majority Leader, the lawmakers commended Lagos State and the Federal Governments for declaring June 12 and May 29 as national holidays in the country. He lauded the Federal Government for following the good example laid by the state government to accept the days as national holidays. Read more
Eredo, Ikosi-Ejinrin back Ambode for second term (Nation)
All Progressives Congress (APC) faithful, leaders of thought and other stakeholders in Eredo area of Epe, Lagos State, have endorsed the second term ambition of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode. The event took place at Lanre Odubote’s Multi-Purporse Hall in Eredo. It was attended by Wale Raji, a member of the House of Representatives for Epe Federal Constituency II, local government and ward chairmen of the APC in Eredo and Ikosi-Ejinrin Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs), among others. ‘Include sex education in school curriculum’ (Nation)
The Lagos State Government in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNPFA) and some key stakeholders in sex education have called for the inclusion of sex education in the curriculum of non-formal vocational training. This proposal was made during an advocacy programme by the Lagos State Ministry of Youth and Social Development. The programme was sponsored by the Nigerian office of UNFPA. The Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Youth and Social Development, Mr. Hakeem Muri-Okunola, who spoke at the event at the weekend, reiterated the need to include Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) (using the Family Life and Health Education Textbook) by Action Health Incorporated into non-formal vocational training. Clearing agents embark on indefinite strike at Lagos Airport (Nation)
Commercial activities at the cargo section of the Murtala Muhammed Airport (MMA), Lagos was on Monday grounded following the introduction of a new policy by the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Lagos Airport Command. The clearing agents also accused the command of tripling charges imposed on them for clearance of consignments at the airport. The clearing agents in their hundreds protested in the open the directive from Mrs. Jayne Shoboiki, the Customs Area Comptroller (CAC), MMA Command that all consignments must as from July 13, 2018 be on Form M. The agents insisted that the policy was anti-progress, stressing that some of the consignments could not come with Form M as they were not major goods. Read more
Lagos, Netherlands seek collaboration on water transport (Punch)
The Lagos State Government and the Netherlands say they are considering collaboration on water transport in Lagos. The Head of the Kingdom of Netherlands in Lagos, Michael Deelan, who visited the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation on Monday in Alausa, said the country would like to partner Lagos in boosting its water transport. He said Netherlands and Lagos State had a lot of things in common in terms of geography and proximity to the coast, adding that Netherlands had a good waterway system controlled by latest technology which Lagos could tap into. Fresh hope on Lagos cable car as construction begins Q3 2019 (BusinessDay)
Six years after it signed an agreement to begin its proposed first commercial cable car transportation system in Lagos, Nigeria, Ropeways Transport Limited, says it is closing in on its financials and looking to commence construction work from the third quarter of 2019. The company’s position comes to renew fading hope on the multi-million project conceived to partly address the trauma that Nigerians go through in crawling gridlocks in the commercial city of Lagos. It is estimated that traffic congestion in Lagos costs the state’s economy a whopping $42 million monthly. Read more
Camair-Co returns to Lagos-Doula Route (Independent)
The Cameroon Airlines Corporation (Camair-Co) has returned its direct flight from Doula to Lagos, Nigeria, years after suspending flight operations between the two routes. The airline returned to the route last Saturday according to a statement from its Nigerian media consultant. The statement hinted that at the welcoming ceremony held at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), Dr. Ekonrong Dong, the Consul General of Cameroon in Lagos expressed delight at the return of service between the two countries. Court remands wife for ‘killing, mutilating’ hubby’s body (Nation)
A Lagos High Court yesterday ordered that a lawyer, Udeme Otike-Odibe, be remanded in prison following her arraignment for allegedly killing her husband and mutilating his body. Otike-Odibe, 47, was slammed with a two-count charge of murder and tampering with a body, contrary to Sections 223 and 165(b) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. The offences are punishable by death and five years’ imprisonment. Prosecuting Counsel Babatunde Sunmonu told Justice Adedayo Akintoye that Otike-Odibe stabbed Symphorosa (Sym), 50, to death with a knife and severed his genital. She allegedly attempted to commit suicide afterwards. Read more
Alleged rape: Ex-UNILAG lecturer to open defence Sept 17 (PremiumTimes)
Afeez Baruwa, a former part-time lecturer at the University of Lagos, is set to commence his defence on September 17 against a charge of rape of an 18-year-old admission seeker. Justice Josephine Oyefeso of an Ikeja High Court gave the date after the case came up for mention on Monday. The lecturer was represented by Taiwo Akindele while Y. G. Oshoala is the lead prosecutor for the state. Two witnesses are to testify in the September trial in defence of Mr Baruwa. The prosecution had on January 23 closed its case against the former lecturer. Four prosecution witnesses had testified during the trial, including the complainant, her father, a medical doctor and the Investigating Police Officer. Read more
Police dock 3 kidnap suspects in Lagos (DailyTrust)
Three men who allegedly abducted a woman for ransom of N20 million have been arraigned before an Ikeja Chief Magistrate’s Court. The accused persons are Finboy Brown, 24, Emeka Richard, 19 and Unity Udoy. The police said the accused were arrested after they abducted a Lagos business woman, Daisy Ada Vwarak, from her Ilupeju home. The prosecutor, Mr. Benson Emuerhi told the court that after abducting the woman, the accused persons demanded for the sum of N20 million as ransom before they would free her. The prosecutor said the accused persons used two telephone numbers to make contact for the ransom. He said they also gave details of the bank account into which the victim should pay the ransom and threatened that if she contacted the police, she would be killed. Read more
LASU student jumps into Lagos lagoon (Vanguard)
An undergraduate student of Lagos State University, LASU, Kingsley Gabriel, Monday, jumped into Lagos lagoon, weeks after a woman was alleged to have jumped into lagoon in the state. Vanguard gathered that the student jumped from Falomo Bridge into the lagoon at about 11 am, leaving no reason for his action. Confirming the act, General Manager, Lagos State Waterways Authority, LASWA, Mr. Damilola Emmanuel, lamented that the act was becoming rampant worrisome on Lagos waterways. Read more
