Sanitation workers (street sweepers) in the employment of the Lagos Waste Management Agency (LAWMA), on Tuesday, down tools to mourn the death of their colleagues on Oshodi-Gbagada expressway inward Iyana-Oworo axis.
The street sweepers were thrown into mourning on Monday after the tragic loss of two of their colleagues who were hit by a driver who was trying to evade arrest from officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Agency, LASTMA.
It was learnt that the driver of the vehicle turned himself in to the police on Monday night. Read more
Compliance, defiance as NLC, TUC indefinite strike kicks off (Guardian)
The industrial action embarked upon by Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) witnessed varied levels of compliance yesterday.
Following an attack on NLC President, Joe Ajaero, and workers in Imo State, both unions had called for the action, demanding the Federal Government to bring perpetrators to justice, besides other grievances they levelled against both the state and federal government.
TUC President, Festus Osifo, on Monday, was quoted as saying: “We want the government to meet some key demands regarding the brutalisation of the NLC president. We set some conditions and those conditions were very clear without ambiguity whatsoever. Read more
NLC: Strike not about Ajaero but against official impunity (ThisDay)
The leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), yesterday, rejected the ascription of the nationwide strike the congress embarked upon in conjunction with the Trade Union Congress (TUC) as a personal agenda by NLC president, Comrade Joe Ajaero.
On the contrary, NLC said, “the arrest and protective custody” of Ajaero by the Nigeria Police, which led to multiple injuries to his body and psychology, was a state-sponsored act of terror not just against an individual but all freedom-loving Nigerians.
The strike recorded partial compliance in many parts of the country.
Relatedly, a pro-democracy group, United Action Front of Civil Society, condemned what it described as the hostile disposition of the President Bola Tinubu administration to constructive opposition and labour activism since assumption of office. Read more
Aviation unions shun NLC’s nationwide strike (Tribune)
Tuesday’s much-talked-about nationwide strike declared by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC and the Trade Union Congress (NLC) failed to take off across the country’s aviation sector.
According to investigations carried out by the Nigerian Tribune, all the Aviation unions refused to partake in the struggles spearheaded by the two national bodies to protest the brutalization of the NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, by some thugs in Owerri, Imo State, two weeks ago.
Going around the Lagos airport, flight activities and other businesses within the airport and its environs went on peacefully with other aviation workers carrying out their functions without distraction. Read more
Stay off BRT lanes, LAMATA warns motorcyclists (Punch)
The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority has again warned commercial motorcyclists, popularly known as Okada, to steer clear of the Bus Rapid Transit corridors in the state or risk being arrested.
LAMATA, in a campaign on Tuesday, also stressed that passengers patronising Okada plying the BRT corridors will be arrested alongside the rider.
The agency decried the spate of accidents caused by the activities of commercial motorcyclists using the BRT lanes and warned that such would no longer be condoned. Read more
Old, re-designed naira notes to remain legal tender ad infinitum -CBN (Independent)
The Central Bank of Nigeria CBN on Tuesday declared that both the both the old naira notes, and the redesigned naira notes shall remain legal tenders in the country.
The CBN made this known in a statement made available to newsmen in Abuja by Isa AbdulMumin, the Director, Corporate Communications.
The statement reads: “Please recall that the Central Bank of Nigeria introduced the redesign of N200, N500 and N1,000 denominations in October 2022 and certain deadlines were set for the old design of these denominations to cease as legal tenders. Read more
62 passengers escape death as aircraft skids off runway in Rivers

At least 62 passengers escaped death on Tuesday as an aircraft belonging to Nigerian airline, Value Jet skidded, off the runway at the Port Harcourt International Airport in Rivers State.
The incident caused panic among the passengers in the oil-rich state after the jet reportedly landed at 3.30 pm the passengers and five flight crew members were on board.
The Port Harcourt International Airport is situated in Omagwa, Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State. Read more

A total of 179 students awarded the Bilateral Education Agreement, BEA scholarship in Russian for the 2023/2024 academic session are to depart Nigeria on Wednesday.

Rwanda: Ex-doctor goes on trial in France over 1994 genocide (AfricaNews)
Rwandan former gynaecologist went on trial in France on Tuesday on charges of genocide and crimes against humanity during the 1994 massacres in his home country, in an investigation stretching back nearly three decades.
It is one of France’s longest-running cases, with Sosthene Munyemana appearing at the Assize Court in the French capital nearly 30 years after a complaint was filed against him in the southwestern French city of Bordeaux in 1995.
The 68-year-old former doctor, accused of organising torture and killings during the genocide of Tutsis in Rwanda, arrived late for the hearing scheduled to begin at 9:00 am (0800 GMT). Read more

Jonathan Bailey recently shared he was able to film “Wicked” during the American actors strike because he is in the Britsh actors union, Equity.
While the rest of the cast of the popular musical’s film adaptation were unable to shoot during the strike, Bailey spent four days on set and finished up some of Fiyero’s scenes. However, the crew had to get creative with his co-stars.

The Zutons have announced their first new album in 16 years as they prepare to embark on a UK tour.
The Liverpool band, who are perhaps best known for writing Valerie which was later covered by Amy Winehouse, formed in 2001 taking their name from The Magic Band guitarist Bill Harkleroad, better known as Zoot Horn or ‘Zuton’ Rollo. The band originally consisted of Dave McCabe, Sean Payne, Russell Pritchard and Boyan Chowdhury, who left in 2007.

Israeli military launches “precise and targeted” ground operation inside Gaza’s Al-Shifa hospital, IDF says (CBS)
The Israel Defense Forces says it is carrying out a “precise and targeted operation against Hamas in a specified area” of Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza.
The ground operation, based on intelligence and “operation necessity,” came after the Israeli military had repeatedly warned Hamas against using the hospital as a base for its operations, the IDF said in a statement issued Wednesday morning local time.
“Yesterday, the IDF conveyed to the relevant authorities in Gaza once again that all military activities within the hospital must cease within 12 hours. Unfortunately, it did not,” the Israeli military said, adding that Hamas’s alleged use of the hospital violates international law. Read more

The Netflix Cup saw Formula 1 and PGA Tour stars face off in a live Las Vegas event – and it turned out to be a chaotic experience.
The first foray into live sports coverage for the streaming giants saw some of the biggest names from two sports square off on the golf course. And it was eventful to say the least, with the fun-filed event far from as serious and regimented as a standard golf event.

Pacers’ Jalen Smith exits with head injury, taken to hospital (ESPN)
Indiana Pacers forward Jalen Smith left Tuesday night’s NBA in-season tournament game against the Philadelphia 76ers with a head injury, and the team said he was being transported to a hospital for evaluation and additional testing.
Smith was knocked down in a collision at the defensive end of the floor midway through the second quarter as Sixers forward Paul Reed went up for a dunk.
Smith immediately left the floor with Indiana’s trainers. He was declared out for the rest of the game at halftime after scoring five points in 2:33 of action. The team said on X, formerly known as Twitter, that Smith was being taken to the hospital “out of an abundance of caution”. Read more
