Lagos task force arrests 53 suspected drug peddlers (Punch)

No fewer than 53 street urchins and miscreants suspected to be drug peddlers were arrested by the operatives of the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Enforcement unit also known as the Lagos task force during a raid of their hideouts on Tuesday.

This was contained in a statement signed by the agency’s spokesperson, Gbadeyan Abdulraheem, on Tuesday.

The raid was carried out in the Gowon Estate, Egbeda and some parts of Alimosho Local Government Area of the state, it was stated. Read more 

Furniture maker acquitted of raping four-year-old daughter (Punch)

Justice Rahman Oshodi of the Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court on Tuesday discharged and acquitted a 35-year-old upholstery maker, Taiwo Opasina, charged with alleged sexual assault of his four-year-old daughter, (name withheld).

The judge in his judgment held that the prosecution failed to discharge the burden of proof against Opasina.

Oshodi said the prosecution failed to present the vital witness, (alleged survivor) before the court to give evidence. Read more

Man jailed four years for sexually assaulting 16-year-old girl (Punch)

An Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court on Tuesday convicted and sentenced a man, Onyeka Ubaka, to four years imprisonment for sexual assault and indecent treatment of a 16-year-old girl.

Justice Rahmon Oshodi convicted him after he pleaded guilty to the two amended charges brought against him by the Lagos State Government.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Ubaka was initially arraigned on January 12, 2024, and was initially charged with defilement through one-count information filed on October 26, 2023, to which he pleaded not guilty. Read more

Brothers tackle police over illegal detention, N20k extortion (Punch)

Two siblings, Daniel and James Ogbonna, have accused officers attached to the Makinde Police Station in Oshodi, Lagos State, of detaining them illegally and also forcing them to bail themselves with the sum of N20,000.

The brothers, who spoke to PUNCH Metro on Monday, said the incident happened on Thursday.

Daniel told our correspondent that before the arrest, he had received calls from strange numbers on Wednesday, creating suspicion about the activities of fraudsters. Read more

Three suspects get N30m bail for alleged N29.3m fraud (Punch)

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, on Thursday, arraigned, three men Saka Olubamishe, Omogoye Olusegun and Olumuyiwa Adesina, before the Ikeja Special Offences Court for allegedly obtaining N29,386, 500, under pretence of transferring dollar to Copart Auto Auction in America.

The defendants, who were arraigned before Justice Olubunmi Abike-Fadipe, are facing three counts bordering on conspiracy, stealing and obtaining preferred against them by the EFCC.

The anti-graft agency’s prosecuting counsel, B. M. Isha, told the court that the defendants committed the offences sometime in July 2023 in Lagos. Read more

Lawyer’s absence stalls kidnapper, Evans’s re-arraignment (Punch)

The re-arraignment of the convicted billionaire kidnapper, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike, also known as Evans, before Justice Adenike Coker of a Lagos High Court, in Ikeja, was on Thursday stalled due to the absence of his counsel.

When the case was called, he was not represented by any lawyer.

Justice Coker then asked Evans the whereabouts of his lawyer and why he had not been informed of the day’s proceedings. Read more

Lagos taskforce dislodges traders from Ikotun BRT station, arrests 9 (Punch)

Officials of the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Taskforce, on Thursday, dislodged traders and confiscated illegally displayed goods at the Ikotun BRT bus station.

The state Commissioner for the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this in a statement on Friday.

He noted that various goods and items unlawfully displayed by vendors at the bus station and its surrounding areas were seized by the taskforce. Read more 

Lagos driver jailed 5 years for inflicting harm on policeman (Punch)

A  Lagos State High Court sitting in Ikeja on Wednesday, convicted and sentenced a 38-year-old driver, Sunday Okodo, to five years imprisonment for inflicting grievous bodily harm on a police officer, David Zapania, attached to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority.

Justice Oyindamola Ogala, who delivered the judgment, convicted Okodo on three of the five counts filed against him by the Lagos State Government.

The court found him guilty on counts two, four, and five and acquitted him on the remaining charges. Read more

NAFDAC busts Lagos warehouse stocked with expired, unregistered goods (Punch)

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has raided a warehouse in Oke-Afa, Okota, Lagos, filled with unregistered and expired supermarket items.

This was revealed in a statement shared on X.com (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday.

According to NAFDAC, acting on intelligence, officials swooped in on the facility, catching operators unloading a 20ft container of unregistered carbonated drinks. Read more

13-year-old remanded for defiling toddler (Punch)

An Ogba Chief Magistrate Court in Lagos State, on Tuesday, ordered the remand of a 13-year-old boy (name withheld) at the correctional facility for boys. The 13-year-old was remanded at Oregun, for allegedly defiling a two-year-old girl.

The teen was charged before the court on a count of defilement preferred against him by the police.

The prosecutor, Inspector John Iberedem, told the court that the teenager allegedly committed the offence on September 23, 2024, at 8:25 p.m., at Ayodele Musa Street, Unity Estate, Egbeda, Lagos. Read more

Lagos to probe school over alleged sodomy (Punch)

The Lagos State Government has announced plans to investigate the alleged defilement of a 10-year-old boy by a 22-year-old teacher, Louis Prosper, at Blessed Peace School in Abule Odu in Egbeda community, Alimosho Local Government Area of the state.

The spokesperson for the state Ministry of Education, Mr Kayode Sutton, disclosed on Monday that the issue could have been addressed much earlier if they (the ministry) had been aware of the teacher’s alleged crime.

Trafficker jailed four years for 800g drug import (Punch)

A drug trafficker, Nnamani Sunday, was on Monday convicted and sentenced to four years imprisonment by the Federal High Court in Lagos State for attempting to export 800 grams of Cannabis Sativa, also called Marijuana, to the United Kingdom.

Sunday was sentenced by Justice Ayokunle Faji without an option of a fine.

Earlier, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency prosecutor, Mr. Abu Ibrahim, told the court that Sunday was arrested on August 10, 2024, during the examination of cargoes to the United Kingdom, at the Skyway Handling Company Export Shed, at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos. Lagos bizman jailed 21 years for N43.5m fraud (Punch)

A Lagos Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja, on Monday, convicted and sentenced the Chairman of the Natural Oil and Gas Suppliers Association of Nigeria, Fatuyi Yemi Philips, to 21 years’ imprisonment for N43.5m fraud.

Justice Mojisola Dada handed down the sentence after finding Philips guilty of two counts brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

The EFCC accused Philips of obtaining N43,502,000 under false pretences and filed charges against him alongside Oceanview Oil and Gas Nigeria Limited. Read more
