The Lagos State Taskforce officials have arrested at least 44 street traders and vendors illegally occupying roadsides around the Mile 2 Oke bridge.
The chairman of the Agency, Chief Superintendent of Police, CSP Adetayo Akerele, who led the operation, said it was part of a renewed effort to maintain order and ensure free movement along major highways in the metropolis.
According to Akerele, the exercise at the axis was carried out to address persistent complaints from motorists and commuters regarding obstruction, traffic congestion, and environmental hazards caused by illegal activities.
The suspects were apprehended for violating the stateโs environmental and traffic laws against illegal trading along the highways and will be duly prosecuted.
Speaking on the development, the chairman reiterated the agencyโs commitment to restoring order in public spaces.
โDespite repeated warnings and enforcement exercises, some individuals continue to defy regulations by illegally trading on major roads and pedestrian walkways.
โThis operation is part of the ongoing efforts to ensure compliance and enhance safety and ease of movement for all Lagosians.
โThe operation is the third in the series of enforcement for compliance carried out on the bridge between January this year till date,โ he stated.
Akerele, therefore, warned traders and those who evaded arrest to relocate their trading activities to designated centers designed for commercial activities or risk being arrested and have the wares confiscated.
โWe are very much aware that some criminal elements amongst them hide under the guise of street trading to perpetrate their evil activities.
โAll that has come to an end as of today because we are going all out to thwart their activities across the State,โ Akerele vowed.
Akerele, however, urged residents to continually utilise the feedback channels provided by the agency to report suspicious activities of any individual or group to sustain the peace and serenity enjoyed in the state. (Vanguard)
