Lagos to build World Cup village at Eko Atlantic (Punch)
The Lagos State Government has partnered Balmoral Group, an events solutions company in West Africa, to build a football viewing village at the Eko Atlantic City. The Russia 2018 World Cup starts on June 14. In a statement on Wednesday, Balmoral Group said the football village would be a state-of-the-art viewing center that will run throughout the duration of the World Cup. It said the scope of the village would be beyond football as it would extend to all aspects of life to bring together all lovers and fans of football. Read more
No division in Lagos APC – Gbajabiamila (DailyTrust)
The Leader of the House of Representatives, Mr Femi Gbajabiamila on Friday said there was no division in the Lagos chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) over the May 19 congress. Gbajabiamila spoke in Lagos at the launch of “Gbaja Ride”, an empowerment programme in his Surulere 1 Federal Constituency. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the lawmaker presented 30 minibuses, 25 tricycles and 160 motorcycles to over 200 beneficiaries at the programme. Gbajabiamila said the belief in some quarter that the chapter was factionalised was wrong, pointing out the party was one in the state. He described the parallel congress convened by a chieftain of the party, Mr Fouad Oki as just a birthday party, saying it lacked all the elements of a recognised congress. Read more
Jonathan, Ambode, Ajimobi, Amosun commiserate with Aboderin family (Nation)
More condolences poured in for the family of the late Chairman of Punch Nigeria Limited, Mr. Gbadebowale Aboderin yesterday. Aboderin, a trained pilot and basketball enthusiast, died in Lagos on Wednesday following a heart surgery at First Cardiology Consultants. He was aged 60. Among the eminent Nigerians who sent condolence messages to the family yesterday were for President Goodluck Jonathan; Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode; Oyo State Governor, Abiola Ajimobi and Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun. Driver relives late Punch chairman’s last moments (Nation)
The deceased Chairman of Punch Nigeria Limited, Mr. Gbadebowale Aboderin’s driver, Mr. Joseph Aderounmu, has said that there was nothing to suggest that his boss was ill when he dropped him off in the hotel from where he proceeded to the hospital for a heart surgery. Aboderin, a trained pilot and basketball enthusiast, died in Lagos on Wednesday at the age of 60 after a heart surgery at First Cardiology Consultants. Aderounmu, a personal driver of the deceased who had worked with him for 10 years, said: “When I dropped him at the hotel, he said he would be there for the next five days and told me to behave well and not forget his admonitions. “He even gave me N5,000 and promised to call me whenever he needed me. The rumours I read about myself on the social media are that I have collected money from the government and that I don’t speak the truth anymore and I don’t speak for the people. So, I wanted to prove a point. Also, many people would feel that since I have not released a new song, I am out of the business. I’m giving a positive vibe, as I am not out of business.
I will be releasing an EP soon
I would do a three-track EP and I have a feature with Oriste Femi. The idea behind the song is that it’s a letter from celebrities, from their fans to the President, asking questions. If you look at it well, Davido, Wizkid, 2face have more than two million fans and most of them are Nigerians and right now the state of the country is in a mess. Everyone wants to know why things are this bad and why so much poverty in the land. Read more

His safe to say that Nigerian superstar, Ayo Balogun, a.k.a Wizkid, is on top of his game. From the beginning of the year, the pop singer has been on a winning streak, the latest being his impressive United Kingdom (UK) tour. Wizkid reportedly sold out London’s 20,000-capacity O2 Arena earlier this week, making him the first Nigerian to do that. And even though he has been recording hits, picking up awards and touring the world in the last six months, the artiste’s personal life has elicited interest among his fans. Since the beginning of the year, when he collaborated with music diva, Tiwa Savage, and released the track, ‘Malo,’ all eyes have been on both singers. Entertainment buffs argued that the chemistry displayed by both artistes doesn’t feel like they were just singing. It also didn’t help that ‘Malo’ is a love song. Read more
Gambler arrested for playing N600,000 bets on credit (Punch)
The police in Lagos have arrested a 38-year-old businessman, Williams Peter, for allegedly refusing to pay a debt of N600,000 he incurred in a gambling game. One Solomon Adetoro, who operated the game centre, was also apprehended by the police for conniving with Peter to allegedly defraud the management of the gambling firm. Our correspondent learnt that Peter approached Adetoro at the gambling outlet on Olowu Street, Ikeja, Lagos, on May 24, 2018, to play the game. He was said to have placed several bets without winning and promised to pay the following day. Read more
Landlord, 55, docked for locking tenant indoor (Guardian)
A Lagos landlord, Oyetunji Oyebode, 55, who allegedly locked up his tenant indoor, was yesterday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court. Oyebode, a resident of 46, Adesiyan Street in Ilupeju area of Lagos, is charged for breach of peace. The prosecutor, Michael Unah, told the court that the accused committed the offence on May 28 at about 3.45pm at the same address. According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Unah said the accused conducted himself in a manner likely to cause a breach of peace by forcefully locking up the complainant, Miss Adebukola Shitta, in her room. A married 32-year-old official at an insurance firm in Lagos, Chioma (pseudonym) is at daggers drawn with a businessman in the state, identified as Orazu, over controversies surrounding alleged cases of rape and kidnapping. Chioma said Orazu was her ex-lover and allegedly raped her during a visit to her residence – a three bedroomed flat in the Alakuko end of Ogun State – two weeks after she was delivered of a baby boy. But Orazu denied there was any relationship between him and Chioma, claiming that the mother of three, her nephew, Kester, and her husband, Sanni, kidnapped him during a visit and demanded a ransom of N10m from his family. Court remands teenager for defiling 4-year-old sister (Guardian)
An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, yesterday, in Lagos, remanded a 16-year-old teenager (name withheld) at a correctional home for defiling his four-year-old sister. The magistrate, Mrs. B.O. Osunsanmi, who gave the ruling, said the boy should remain in the correctional centre in Ikeja, pending sentence. According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the accused, who lived with his parents at Ipaja, was arraigned for defilement. He, however, pleaded guilty to the charge. The prosecutor, Ezekiel Ayorinde, told the court that the accused committed the offence at the residence of his parents last year, where he “had sexual intercourse with the minor.” Read more
Cult members kill father of 2 in Lagos (Punch)
Some hoodlums suspected to be cult members have killed a commercial motorcyclist identified only as Lukman at the Odo Eran area of Oworonshoki, a Lagos suburb. Lukman, a father of two, was passing along Odo Eran on Monday when he was ambushed by the cult members, who hacked him to death. Saturday PUNCH learnt that the incident was in furtherance of renewed hostility between rival cult groups terrorising the community. The victim had, on sighting the hoodlums that day, attempted to evade the attack but ran into a gutter with the motorcycle in the process. Read more

GTBank-Lagos Principals Cup Season 9 begins June 6 (ThisDay)
The preliminaries of the 2018 GTBank-Lagos Principals Cup Season 9 competition will kick off on June 6 in four different venues- Dairy Farm Senior Secondary School, Agege, King’s College, Lagos Island, St Finbarr’s College, Akoka and Ansar-Ud-Deen College, Isolo. The winners and runners up from each group will progress to the quarter final stage of the competition. This much was revealed at the draws held at the corporate head office of Guaranty Trust Bank on Thursday. According to the draws, last year’s winner, Ijaiye Housing Estate Senior Grammar School, Ijaiye, was drawn in Group B alongside Egan Senior Grammar School, Alimosho, Estate Senior Grammar School, Mushin and Ilado Community High School, Ikoyi.
