The cultural community of Lagos is preparing to pay homage to the life and legacy of Tam Fiofori, a pioneering figure in Nigerian photography and filmmaking.
A memorial tribute night is scheduled for Friday, August 16, 2024, at the historic Freedom Park, celebrating the multifaceted career of the artist who passed away on June 25, 2024, at the age of 82.
Tam Fiofori, whose work spanned over six decades, left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s artistic landscape. Renowned for his documentary photography that captured pivotal moments in the nation’s history, he was also acclaimed for his contributions to film, writing and cultural criticism. His diverse body of work included compelling documentaries on Nigerian artists and a significant stint in 1960s Harlem where he managed Sun Ra and contributed to the foundations of Afrofuturism.
The tribute night, to begin at 5pm, will be held at the historic Freedom Park on Lagos Island.
Organisers, including Ugoma Ebilah, Chriss Nworbu and Juliet Ezenwa Pearce, are planning various programmes to celebrate Fiofori’s life and work.
The event description states, “He has joined our ancestors who sailed and rode these waters since time began,” highlighting Fiofori’s connection to Nigerian heritage and his far-reaching influence.
This Lagos tribute complements funeral arrangements scheduled in Port Harcourt. Fiofori will be laid to rest in Okrika, his hometown on Thursday, August 22, 2024.
Friends, colleagues and admirers are invited to gather, reminisce, sing songs and share stories about Tam Fiofori’s impactful life and career. The tribute night promises to welcome attendees “as Uncle Tam did all his life,” celebrating his legacy of openness and cultural enrichment.
