Lagos to shut Ojuelegba Flyover on Saturday (Vanguard)

The Lagos State government, yesterday, announced a traffic diversion for the installation of a truck barrier at the Ojuelegba Flyover, by the Fire Station.

According to the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the flyover will be shut on Saturday 5 and Sunday 6, 2024, between 10 pm and 5 am.

Motorists were advised to use the diversion route below during the nighttime installation of the barriers. Read more 

Tricycle operators in Lagos get free fuel (Nation)

In celebration of Nigeria’s 64th Independence anniversary, over 5,000 tricycle operators in Alimosho Constituency, Lagos State have received free fuel vouchers worth over N25 million.

The initiative, led by the Chairman of the Tricycle Owners and Operators Association of Nigeria (TOOAN) of NURTW, Zone C, Azeez Abiola, also known as Istijaba, aimed to support the operators amid the country’s challenging economic climate.

Abiola reiterated his commitment to ensuring the welfare of tricycle operators, emphasising that the union is working with law enforcement agents to ensure operators abide by regulations. Read more

Tinubu mourns Victims Of Niger Boat Mishap, Orders Probe (Leadership)

President Bola Tinubu has sent condolences to the Government and people of Niger State over a boat accident which occurred Tuesday night in Mokwa local government area of the state.

The boat, which was reportedly carrying about 300 people, primarily women and children, was sailing on the Gbajibo River from the Mundi community in Kaiama local government area of Kwara State when it capsised.

While at least 150 people were rescued from the scene, 25 bodies have so far been recovered. Read more

Reps greenlight bill to create Nigeria surrogacy regulatory body (Independent)

The House of Representatives has approved a bill seeking to establish the Nigeria Surrogacy Regulatory Commission, which will be responsible for monitoring and supervising surrogacy arrangements across the country.

The proposed legislation, titled “A Bill for an Act to Provide for the Registration, Regulation and Monitoring of Surrogacy Agencies in Nigeria and for Related Matters,” aims to address the growing need for oversight in surrogacy practices.

While leading the debate on the general principles of the bill, its sponsor, Hon. Ayodeji Alao-Akala, highlighted the importance of regulating surrogacy to ensure that medical and health laws are strictly adhered to. He emphasized that the bill would offer protection to individuals seeking to overcome infertility through surrogacy while also safeguarding the interests of surrogate mothers and the children born through the process. Tinubu orders investigation into Niger boat mishaps, mourns victims (Channels)

President Bola Tinubu on Thursday ordered an investigation into the recent cases of boat accidents in Niger State.

The North Central state has been hit with a series of boat mishaps in the past one year with the latest happening on Tuesday night whereby no fewer than 60 people, mostly women and children, were killed.

The locally made wooden boat, with a capacity of 100 passengers, had about 300 people on board when it overturned in the rural Mokwa district, an emergency official said on Wednesday. Read more

3-day protests begin in Ghana, demanding release of detained activists (AfricaNews)

Demonstrations rocked the streets of Accra on Thursday, with protesters calling for the release of 53 activists who were arrested last week during an anti-galamsey demonstration.

This marks the beginning of protests that are scheduled to continue until Saturday.

Alec Baldwin’s “Rust” set to premiere 3 years after Halyna Hutchins’ death – but he won’t be there (Independent)

Alec Baldwin’s Western movie “Rust” will finally have its world premiere next month at the 2024 EnergaCamerimage International Film Festival, three years after the tragic on-set death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.

The festival will take place from November 16 to November 23 in Poland.

The screening will be followed by a “unique” panel discussion with director Joel Souza, who was also injured by the bullet that fatally struck Hutchins in October 2021. Country music star Garth Brooks has been accused of rape and sexual assault in a lawsuit filed by his former hair and make-up artist.

The woman, who does not use her name in the lawsuit and goes by Jane Roe, claims the assault occurred when she travelled from Nashville to Los Angeles with the singer, who was performing at the 2019 Grammy Awards.

The lawsuit – filed on Thursday in the Los Angeles Superior Court – alleges that despite Brooks normally travelling with an entourage, she and Brooks flew alone to the event on his private jet, and that he had booked just one hotel suite for both of them. Read more

Thai school bus inferno: Flowers and toys at funeral for victims (StraitsTimes)

Weeping parents placed flowers and toys on the coffins of 20 children killed in a Thai school bus inferno as five days of funeral prayers began on Oct 3. Three teachers also died in the incident.

Family members dressed in black gathered in the assembly hall of Wat Khao Phraya Sangkharam school in the northern province of Uthai Thani to console one another and pray for their loved ones.

A huge display of white flowers adorned the 23 coffins, which were topped with portraits of the dead, and offerings of food, drink, and even toy trucks and dolls, to comfort the departed spirits. Read more

UK will give sovereignty of Chagos Islands to Mauritius (BBC)

The UK has announced it is giving up sovereignty of a remote but strategically important cluster of islands in the Indian Ocean after more than half a century.

The deal – reached after years of negotiations – will see the UK hand over the Chagos Islands to Mauritius in a historic move.

This includes the tropical atoll of Diego Garcia, used by the US government as a military base for its navy ships and long-range bomber aircraft.

The announcement, made in a joint statement by the UK and Mauritian Prime Ministers, ends decades of often fractious negotiations between the two countries. Read more
