LASG demolishes school, proprietor demands compensation (Punch)
The Proprietor of the Queen Diana International School, Samuel Kanu, has been distraught after the Lagos State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development demolished his school.
PUNCH Metro gathered that the school, located on 5/7 Ugochukwu Close, Oja Oba, Abule Egba, was demolished on February 18, 2020.
According to Kanu, after a notice, dated January 17, 2020, to remove the property within seven days was served on the school, he wrote to the Office of the Governor, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, as well as the Permanent Secretary and Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development.
He added that the notice prompted him to also file a suit in court and the court processes were pasted on the wall of the school building. Read more
Again, Petroleum tanker spills content at Otedola bridge (DailyTrust)
A tanker fully loaded with 40,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) known as petroleum has discharged its content causing panic at the Otedola Bridge inward Berger, Lagos. It was learnt that the tanker disconnected from the truck’s head and in the process spilled its content. There was however no explosion as a result of the incident as emergency officials were swiftly mobilized to the scene. The Lagos State Fire Service personnel and the state Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) officials as well as officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) were on ground to manage the situation. Three killed in Lagos cult clashes (Punch)
Pandemonium broke out in the Ladega and Laketu areas of Ikorodu, Lagos State, when suspected members of the Aiye and Eiye confraternities engaged one another in supremacy fights that left no fewer than three people dead.
PUNCH Metro gathered that the clashes started when suspected members of the Aiye cult invaded Ladega around 10am on Sunday and allegedly shot two rival members dead.
In a reprisal that followed, suspected members of the Eiye cult reportedly mobilised and shot a rival member dead in Laketu around 5pm. Read more
NAMA commissions CAT3 ILS in Lagos, Abuja airports (DailyTrust)
The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) says it has commissioned its newly installed Category 3 Instrument Landing System (CAT3 ILS) at Runway 18 Right, at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos. Capt. Fola Akinkuotu, Managing Director of NAMA, in a statement on Sunday in Lagos, said the agency had also commissioned CAT3 ILS at Runway 22, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja. Akinkuotu said the commissioning of the newly installed DVOR (Doppler Very High Frequency Omni-Directional Radio Range) in Lagos was successfully carried out just as routine flight calibration had also been carried out on Runway 18 Left in Lagos. SERAP, others sue Gbajabiamila, Reps over proposed N5bn spending on 400 cars (DailyTrust)
The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) and 192 concerned Nigerians have filed a lawsuit asking the Federal High Court in Abuja to “restrain and stop Mr Femi Gbajabiamila, Speaker of the House of Representatives and all members of the House from spending an estimated N5.04 billion to buy 400 exotic cars for principal officers and members.” SERAP is also seeking a court order to “restrain and stop the National Assembly Service Commission from releasing any public funds to the House of Representatives to buy 400 Toyota Camry 2020 model cars estimated to cost $35,130 per car, until an impact assessment of the spending on access to public services and goods like education, security, health and clean water, is carried out.” Read more
Police rescue 10-year-old girl sold for N800,000 (DailyTrust)
The Police in Anambra state have rescued a 10-year-old girl, suspected to have been kidnapped from Akwa Ibom state and sold in Anambra state for a sum of N800,000. The police said the victim, whose original name was Favour Asuquo, was renamed Faith Ezeukwu allegedly by her “new parents” (the suspects). Police spokesman in the state, SP Haruna Mohammed, confirmed the incident to our correspondent in Akwa, on Sunday. According to SP Mohammed, “a girl-child of about 10 years old reasonably suspected to have been stolen from Akwa Ibom state since 2018 and sold to a couple in Anambra state at the rate of N800,000 was rescued by Police detectives attached to 33 Division, Onitsha following intelligence report on February 21, 2020.” Read more
How Africa hopes to gain from the ‘new scramble’ (BBC)
Major world powers are jostling for political and economic influence in Africa, but what is behind the renewed interest on the continent and what are African countries doing about it? The BBC’s Dickens Olewe reports.
In recent years Africans have become used to seeing their leaders accumulate air miles while honouring invitations to attend a series of Africa-themed summits held around the world, often advertised as win-win partnerships.
Last year, Japan, Russia and China hosted African presidents and heads of government; last month 15 African leaders attended the UK-Africa Investment Summit in London, and invitations have probably already been sent for similar events reportedly planned in France, Saudi Arabia and Turkey this year. Turkey and Pakistan close borders with Iran as coronavirus death toll reaches 8 (Metro)
Several countries have banned people entering from Iran after the country confirmed eight people have died due to coronavirus. Turkey, Pakistan and Iraq have all shut their borders to Iranian citizens on Sunday, amid accusations Tehran officials have not acted quick enough to contain the outbreak. All forms of transport were banned between Turkey and Iran as of 5pm local time, however flights from Turkey to Iran were still being permitted, confirmed Turkish health minister, Fahrettin Koca. Officials in the Pakistani province of Baluchistan, which has a long frontier with Iran, declared an emergency and suspended almost all traffic across the Taftan border crossing. Read more
Trump in India: US president due to begin first official trip (BBC)
US President Donald Trump is due to begin his first official trip of India with a focus on deepening ties between the world’s two largest democracies.
Mr Trump will arrive in Gujarat, home state of India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, where he is expected to address a rally at a cricket stadium.
He will then travel to Agra to see the Taj Mahal, before arriving in the capital Delhi for talks with Mr Modi.
But amid the fanfare, a much-talked about trade deal is unlikely to happen.
The US is one India’s most important trade partners, with bilateral trade totalling $142.6bn (£110.3bn) in 2018. The US had a $25.2bn goods and services trade deficit with India, its 9th largest trading partner in goods. Read more

The iPhone comes stuffed with 38 apps that allow you to do everything from checking stocks to sending emails. Apple’s designers are at the very top of their game, so many users don’t even think about using rival apps and happily use the default ones. But some people are desperate to free up their phone and remove the ‘bloatware’ which comes preinstalled on their device. Now the tech giant is rumoured to be planning a huge update which will allow people to choose other companies’ software to serve as their default apps. Read more
Israel says it struck Islamic Jihad sites in Gaza and Syria (BBC)
The Israeli military says it has launched air strikes against a Palestinian militant group in Gaza and Syria in response to rocket fire.
Israel’s military said it had struck Islamic Jihad targets in southern Damascus and the Gaza Strip on Sunday.
In a rare acknowledgement of a strike on Syria, the Israeli military said it targeted “a hub of Islamic Jihad’s activity”.
Syria said its air defences shot down most of the Israeli missiles.
Four people were wounded in Gaza, health officials say, but there have been no immediate reports of fatalities from the Israeli strikes. Read more

Ajax star Hakim Ziyech admits he’s already thinking about next season at Chelsea after the Moroccan completed his move to Stamford Bridge. The Blues triggered a release clause in the winger’s contract in January and announced on Sunday evening that they had agreed personal terms with Ziyech over a move to west London. Frank Lampard is desperate to add more firepower to his squad and he expects to lose the likes of Pedro and Willian this summer ahead of Ziyech’s arrival. Completing Ziyech’s move was a mere formality but the Blues have now announced that personal terms have been agreed and the 26-year-old took the chance to express his happiness at completing the deal. Nigeria’s Anyanacho clinches Tokyo 2020 Olympics ticket (DailyTrust)
Nigeria’s Elizabeth Anyanacho has qualified for the Taekwondo event at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics after triumphing at the African qualifier in Rabat, Morocco. News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that 20-year -old Anyancho secured the historic berth after defeating a five-time continental medalist, Urgence Mouega of Gabon, who was the former African Champion. The result had made Elizabeth the first female to qualify for the Taekwondo event of the Olympics in 16 years, and the second female after Princess Dudu’s qualification for the Athens 2004 Olympics. Nigeria’s Benjamin Okuomose, however, failed to clinch the Olympic ticket after losing 17 – 19 to former World Champion and Olympic Silver medalist, Anthony Obame of Gabon. Fresh questions over Mo Farah’s relationship with his banned former coach Alberto Salazar have been raised in a new BBC Panorama investigation.
Documents show Farah repeatedly denied to US Anti-Doping (Usada) investigators he had received injections of the controversial supplement L-carnitine before the 2014 London Marathon.
Farah later changed his account to Usada investigators, saying he had forgotten. Read more

Deontay Wilder’s team have told Frank Warren they intend to call an immediate rematch between the Gypsy King and his rival. The contract for the second fight included a rematch clause, which gave the loser the right to a third bout. Neymar was sent off late on as Paris St-Germain came from behind to get back to winning ways against Bordeaux.

Edinson Cavani replied and Marquinhos’ first goal was swiftly cancelled out by Pablo in first half stoppage time.

Sevilla boost top four hopes with thumping win over Getafe (Punch)
Sevilla delivered a huge boost to their hopes of qualifying for next season’s Champions League by winning 3-0 away at top-four rivals Getafe on Sunday, for their first victory in six matches.
A poor run of form had threatened to kill Sevilla’s chances of securing a place in Europe’s premier tournament but they dismantled usually solid Getafe with goals from Lucas Ocampos, Fernando Reges and Jules Kounde.
Victory means Sevilla move up to third in La Liga, one point above Getafe and three ahead of Real Sociedad in fifth, although la Real have a game in hand. Read more
