Lawyer petitions LASTMA over ambush, illegal arrest, detention of vehicle (Vanguard)
A journalist and lawyer, Osa Director, has petitioned the Lagos State Traffic Management Agency, LASTMA, over the ambush, illegal arrest and detention of his vehicle.
Director, in the petition, said LASTMA officials and policemen attached to the state’s transport management outfit, arrested his Ford Edge SUV for double parking, describing their action as “barbaric and antediluvian in this modern age of technology.”
He said the vehicle was driven to an unknown location with valuables in it, adding that $1,700, a Samsung phone and an expired travelling passport were some of the items in the vehicle. Read more
2,588 children sexually, emotionally abused in 12 months, says Lagos (Guardian)
Lagos State government, yesterday, revealed that 2,588 children experienced sexual and emotional abuse in the last 12 months in the state between August 2022 and July 2023.
Solicitor-General and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Justice, Titilayo Shitta-Bey, stated this during a media briefing to flag off this year’s domestic and sexual violence awareness month with the theme “Not in my Lagos,” which is usually marked every September.
Shitta-Bey, who was represented by the Executive Secretary of Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency, Mrs. Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, added that 40 per cent of those children had been taken through counselling programmes to enable them to psychologically deal with the events they have witnessed without them having permanent and negative impacts on them. The national president of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Chris Isiguzo, has called on his men to prioritise their health, saying that only a healthy body will deliver quality and efficient jobs.
Isiguzo stated this on Thursday at the NUJ/Zeberced Health Walk, which took place from Berger Junction and terminated at NUJ FCT Secretariat, Utako.
While commending the NUJ and Zeberced for coming out with such a lofty idea, the number one journalist urged journalists to always create time out of their tight schedule to attend to their health at all times. Tinubu to address UN General Assembly September 19 (Independent)
Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu will address the 78th Session of the high-level General Debate of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) at the UN headquarters in New York on Tuesday, Sept. 19.
The UN correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Tinubu, in his first outing to the Assembly, will be addressing world leaders in the evening of that day.

The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 81 Division Nigerian Army (NA), Major General Mohammed Takuti Usman, has warned that the Nigerian Armed Forces will not condone disloyal soldiers.
Usman while issuing the warning on Wednesday asked soldiers to be loyal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the country and the constituted authority at all times.
The GOC in his address at the 35 Artillery Brigade, Alamala, Abeokuta, Ogun State urged soldiers to be professional and exhibit total loyalty in how they carry out their responsibilities. Read more

Oprah Winfrey and Dwayne Johnson are giving back in a huge way to those affected by the Maui wildfires.
On Thursday, the duo announced the launch of the People’s Fund of Maui — with an initial $10 million donation from Winfrey, 69, and Johnson, 51.
According to a release, the fund will “distribute cash directly to those who were displaced and affected by the fire,” and “all net proceeds” from donations “will go to those directly impacted in Maui.” Read more

Israeli soldier killed in car ramming attack by Palestinian (AlJazeera)
One Israeli soldier has been killed and two others injured in a ramming attack by a Palestinian truck driver at a checkpoint between Israel and the occupied West Bank, Israeli police and medical officials said.
The ramming happened at the Maccabim checkpoint, known to Palestinians as Beit Sira, on Thursday, and the driver left the scene immediately, only to be stopped at another checkpoint about six kilometres (four miles) away where he was shot and died, Israeli daily Haaretz reported.
According to a statement from the Israeli army, the driver was “neutralised”.
In a separate statement, Israel’s Defence Minister Yoav Gallant offered his condolences to the family of the soldier killed and praised the security forces “for their determined action” in killing the attacker. Read more

A volleyball match in Nebraska appears to have made history Wednesday night — not on the court, but in the stands.
In addition to winning their game against Omaha in a 3-0 sweep, the Nebraska Cornhuskers said they smashed the world record for attendance of a women’s sporting event after the game hosted at Lincoln’s Memorial Stadium drew in more than 92,000 fans.

Wolves boss O’Neil confirms Nunes Man City switch (France24)
Wolves manager Gary O’Neil confirmed on Thursday that Portugal midfielder Matheus Nunes is on his way to Manchester City for a reported fee of £53 million ($67 million).
The Premier League champions had a previous bid for Nunes rejected, with the 25-year-old subsequently choosing not to train with Wolves in a bid to force through a move in the final days of the transfer window.

Ipswich Town have signed England youth international striker Dane Scarlett from Premier League Tottenham Hotspur on a season-long loan deal.
Scarlett, 19, has made 11 first-team appearances for Spurs, with the last coming in their Carabao Cup defeat by Fulham on penalties on Tuesday.
He spent last season on loan in League One at Portsmouth, where he scored six goals in 40 appearances.

Lewis Hamilton will remain a Mercedes driver in Formula One until at least the end of the 2025 season after the team announced a contract extension on Thursday.
Hamilton, who shares the record for most F1 world titles with Michael Schumacher (seven), joined Mercedes in 2013 after starting his career with McLaren in 2007.
