Lawyer to sue Buhari over aides working without reappointment (Punch)

Activist and human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, is set to approach a Federal High Court for interpretation and enforcement of Sections 151 and 171 of the 1999 Constitution following the decision of President Muhammadu Buhari’s 100 aides to continue in office without being re-appointed.

While Section 151 states that the appointment of all special advisers shall cease when the President ceases to hold office, Section 171 states that the appointment of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and any office or the personal staff of the President shall cease when the President ceases to hold office.

The tenure of the President and his deputy, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo (SAN), ended at 12am on May 29, 2019 but was renewed for a second term around 10am on the same day.

All ministers left office on May 28 when the cabinet was dissolved. Similarly, aides to the President held a valedictory gathering last week signalling the end of their service. Read more
