After a series of jaw-dropping performances at the Muson Centre in October, the incredible cast and crew of Legends: Kings and Kingdoms are ready for another awesome package for Lagosians this Yuletide season.
Those who were lucky to see the first show adjudged Legends as the best thing that has happened to the Nigeria theatre stratosphere in recent time.
Aiming to outclass the first edition, the producers said that adjustments are being made to ensure the audience is treated to another stretch of unforgettable spectacle from December 22nd to the 26th at the Shell Hall, Muson Centre. In its first stint, Legends received avalanche of accolades for its extraordinary skills and authenticity of ideas. Regardless, the outpouring of praises has not given room for complacency as the producers are gearing up to take the show a notch higher this time around.
In a joint statement issued on Wednesday, the producers – Gbenga Yusuf and Ayo Ajayi, CEOs of Seeing Through the Arts and Declassical Arts & Entertainment Company, respectively, while announcing the development, said that since the audience has been yearning for more after the first spell, they were compelled to bring the production back on stage as part of a fabulous festive season.
“By popular demand, Legends will be back on stage in December” the statement read in part. It also revealed the motivations and goals behind the musical drama and how the dream was conceived from scratch, among other things.
In the statement, the production was described as phenomenal according to reviews from those who saw it during the Muson Festival held in October earlier this year.
“Legends is an unrivalled piece in terms of entertainment value, the wonderful scripting, the phenomenal actors, dancers and musicians and the imaginative directorial approach, combine to make this show a must-see for every household. Legends is a family event that has no age restrictions. Also, it is not elitist as the tickets are highly affordable,” the producers added.
Five African heroes who lived in different time and age— Sango (Segun Adefila), Nana Yaa Asantewaa (Mojisola Kadiri), Neferneferuaten Nefertiti (Edem Attai), Shaka Zulu (Kelvin Mary) and Queen Amina of Zazzau (Uche Elumelu), are summoned from Kumbayah by the little priestess (Oluchi Odii) who lives in modern time, to come save Modaland from the destructive grip of The Shadow (Floyd Igbo). But alas, they realise that The Shadow is the greatest enemy of mankind that can only be destroyed by curbing the excesses of the man in the mirror.
Yinka Davies also stars in the Legends, a feat that adds to the credibility of the musical drama as truly star-studded, solely made in Nigeria but of universal appeal. Ms. Davies urged Nigerians to “come out en masse” to see the worthwhile show while lauding the producers in their willingness to collaborate with sponsors and supporters in taking the show on tour even beyond the shores of Nigeria in the near future.
Similarly, some of the lead actors spoke about the high morale at rehearsal ground, hinting on the level of expectations and readiness to hit the ground running as the Legends seeks to deepen an unforgettable niche for itself in the firmament of musical drama genre.
