Lekki communities decry neglect by Lagos State Govt, as condition of road worsens (Vanguard)
Communities comprising Okun-Ajah, Okun-Mopo and Iwerekun in Eti-Osa and Ibeju-Lekki Local Government areas in Lagos State have decried the worsening conditions of the road which links the three communities together up to Eleko Beach, due to government’s neglect. The road which serves as an alternative route to Lekki-Epe Expressway when there is traffic on the expressway inward Epe, according to the residents, has not seen government’s intervention for decades. The area harbours numerous beaches, and the residents expressed disappointment with successive state governments since the administration of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, that would come during electioneering campaigns, promising to do the road when they assume power, but will neglect the area once they assume power. The senator representing Benue North-West Senatorial District, George Akume, and Governor Samuel Ortom took on each other on Monday in a war of words. Akume had at the All Progressives Congress expanded caucus meeting held at Castle Event Centre, Makurdi on Sunday described Ortom as a non-performer, alleging that the governor was parading a fake doctoral degree. Automatic ticket: One shot as crisis hits Cross River PDP (Punch)
Ine person was shot on Monday at the Peoples Democratic Party secretariat in Calabar, Cross River State during a protest over the party’s decision to give automatic tickets to members of the National Assembly. It was not clear if the person was shot by security operatives who were all over the secretariat but it was learnt that policemen were trying to control the crowd when the shot was heard. Read more

Saraki, Atiku, Kwankwaso disagree over presidential ticket (Punch)
The Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party has set up a committee to liaise with all the presidential aspirants to discuss the possibility of having a consensus candidate. The BoT also warned its members against campaigning for any of the aspirants in order not to polarise the party. The BoT Chairman, Walid Jibrin, said these decisions were taken after the meeting of the board, which was held in Abuja on Sunday night. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum yesterday passed a vote of no confidence in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), questioning its readiness to conduct credible elections in 2019.The forum also condemned the Federa Government’s alleged use of security operatives for political ends and the refusal by President Muhammadu Buhari to sign the Electoral Amendment Bill. “INEC needs to reinvent itself as a truly independent umpire of the electoral process in the country. For now, we have no confidence in INEC. The commission has conducted itself as a tool of the APC-led Federal Government, especially with the roles of the chairman, Prof. Mahmud Yakubu, and a national commissioner, Mrs. Amina Zakari,” the forum said in a statement by its chairman, Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose. Tobacco is unique; it is the only product which kills up to half of all lifetime users. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the tobacco epidemic is one of the biggest public health threats which kills more than 7 million people each year. It is estimated that by 2030, the number of tobacco-related deaths will increase to 8 million each year (WHO Report on the Global Tobacco Epidemic, 2017). 80% of these deaths will be in low and middle-income countries (including Nigeria), where the burden of tobacco-related death and disease is the heaviest.
