The Lagos jazz scene is set to pay a powerful tribute to the late Rashid Lombard, a towering figure in African arts and culture, with a special concert and jam session scheduled for Sunday, June 29, 2025, at 5pm. The Special Lagos International Jazz Festival (LIJF) Showcase Tribute Concert/Jam Session will honour the life and legacy of Lombard, who passed away earlier this year at the age of 74.

Known as the “amiable and indefatigable” founder and former festival director of “Africa’s Grandest Gathering,” the Cape Town International Jazz Festival, Lombard’s influence on the continent’s cultural landscape is immeasurable. Beyond his pioneering work with the Cape Town festival, he was also a legendary photographer and a tireless cultural activist, championing African talent and fostering artistic exchange.

The tribute will take place at the LIVE Lounge, Idejo Street, Off Adeola Odeku Street, Victoria Island, Lagos, offering free admission to all who wish to celebrate Lombard’s remarkable contributions. The organisers are particularly calling on musicians to “turn up” for what promises to be an unforgettable jam session, brimming with shared melodies and heartfelt memories.

“Join us in music, memories, and heartfelt celebration as we honour a true icon of African arts and culture,” stated the LIJF in their announcement. “Rashid Lombard…Forever in Our Hearts.”

The LIJF Showcase is an Inspiro Production, with support from Smooth 98.1FM, ensuring a fitting and vibrant homage to a man who dedicated his life to the rhythm and soul of Africa. This event offers a unique opportunity for the Lagos community to collectively acknowledge the profound impact of Rashid Lombard and keep his spirit alive through the universal language of jazz.
