Lions Club International District 404B2 Nigeria on Thursday, 18th November 2022 carried out an awareness campaign on diabetes, its prevention and management to Onigbongbo, a community in the Maryland area of Lagos State.
The awareness campaign walk took off from the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), through Under-Bridge Ikeja, Awolowo way, Computer Village and back to LASUTH.
The members of the club distributed fliers on diabetes to members of the public along the routes.
The Lion members later converged on the Palace of the traditional ruler of Onigbongbo where they were joined by members of the community to listen to a talk on diabetes prevention and management.
The talk was delivered by Dr. Kelechi Onyedi, the activity chairperson on Diabetes of Lions Clubs International District 404 B2 Nigeria (Lagos Axis).
He told his listeners that diabetes is a disease that can be managed by taking appropriate medication, eating healthy food and adopting a healthy lifestyle.He stressed the need for people to exercise often, eat less food that contains sugar and carbohydrates like eba, rice, yam and others and rather, eat food like fruits, vegetables, protein and others.
Lion Dr. Onyedi also urged members of the community to go for medical check-ups on a regular basis so that they will know their health status.
Members of the community were screened for diabetes and sugar levels and those who have low and high sugar levels were given appropriate medications and medical counsel. (Independent)
