A 23-year-old man, Paul Awesum, on Friday appeared before a Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly stealing clothes valued at N300,000.
Awesun, whose address is unknown, is facing a two-count charge of breaking in, illegal entry and stealing.
He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The prosecutor, ASP Ikem Uko, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on May 26, at about 11.30 a.m., at Petekun, Ilogbo-Eremi area of Lagos.
Uko said the defendant allegedly broke in and entered into the shop of one Hannah Kareem, the complainant and stole clothes valued at N300,000.
“The defendant stole clothes valued at N300,000, property of the complainant.
“He was caught by the security personnel on duty and taken to police station for prosecution,” he said.
The prosecutor said that the offences are punishable under Sections 309 and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 stipulates three-year jail term for stealing.
The Chief Magistrate, Mr Patrick Adekomaiya, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.
Adekomaiya adjourned the case until July 11, for mention. (NAN)
