Omisore: Appointing prime suspect in Ige’s murder APC secretary discredits probe -Soyinka (Punch)
Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, on Saturday said the resumption of investigation into the murder of a former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Chief Bola Ige, was already hamstrung and disrobed of credibility with the emergence of a prime suspect in the case as the National Secretary of the ruling All Progressive Congress.
The playwright expressed the view in a statement on Saturday titled, “Perhaps closed files should remain just that-closed?”
He said, “With the emergence of the said prime suspect as National Secretary of the ruling party, is the Inspector-General of Police equipped to confront political obstacles in a resumption of investigation? Is there any guarantee that the result will see the light of day? How suspect, ab initio, will be the conclusions, given the present political ordering?
“To this layman, that investigative revisit is already hamstrung and disrobed of credibility. I think the nation should simply relieve President Buhari of his pledge. I am certain the Inspector-General of Police will be equally relieved and can now turn his mind and energy to the national accustomed posture – Business as Usual.” Read more

Universal Music Group will waive unrecouped advances for legacy artists (HNHH)
Universal Music Group will also join Sony Music and Warner in the new initiative to pay royalties back to legacy artists.
Universal Music Group is the next label to announce a program for certain legacy artists to receive royalties without having recouped their advance payments, per Billboard. The company revealed the plan on March 31 in their environmental, social, and governance report. UMG joins Sony Music and Warner in this new program which will kick off sometime this year.
Beggars Group originally started this mission in 2020, aiming to correct bad label deals, especially for Black artists who were locked into exploitative contracts with low royalty rates. The independent label cleared all unrecouped debt on artists advances 15 years after an artist’s last contractual album. Back in 2001, UMG did the same on a smaller scale through its Motown/UMG Fund, which gave health and welfare grants to artists and their spouses per Pitchfork.
Sony Music initially announced they would begin payouts to legacy artists and producers back in 2021. The only catch was individuals had to be signed to the company prior to 2000 and have yet to recoup their record advances. The new policy deemed “Legacy Unrecouped Balance Program” was a part of their new initiative called “Artists Forward” which aimed to improve the communication with artists. Read more

Malaysian Grand Prix: Circuit organisers address idea of F1 returning to Sepang (GMS)
The CEO of the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia has suggested that it is currently unlikely that Formula 1 will return to the track any time soon.
The track first hosted a race in 1999 and was a regular on the calendar until 2017, with that being the last time an F1 Grand Prix was held there.
In the time since, we have seen MotoGP race in Sepang but F1 has instead gone to other venues in the Far East, including Singapore, and costs seemed to be the main issue behind it dropping off of the calendar.
However, in light of the Russian Grand Prix being cancelled, it was suggested Malaysia could come back onto the scene to help fill the void – though that is now looking unlikely – and it seems as though a return to Sepang for F1 is far from imminent: Read more
