Man bags 25-year imprisonment after vomiting, excreting drugs (Punch)
A Delhi, India-bound passenger, Freeman Ogbonna, has been sentenced to 25 years imprisonment by a Federal High Court for drug trafficking.
This came three months after vomiting and excreting eighty wraps of cocaine following his arrest by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, at the screening point of terminal 2 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, MMIA Ikeja Lagos.
This was disclosed in a statement by the NDLEA Director, Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi on Tuesday. Read more
Kano Emirship Tussle: Court adjourns sitting till July 4 (DailyTrust)
A Kano State High Court has fixed July 4, to hear applications in the ongoing emirship tussle instituted against the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado-Bayero.
The applicants, Attorney General of Kano, Speaker Kano State House of Assembly and Kano State House of Assembly, through their counsel, Ibrahim Isah-Wangida Esq, filed a motion ex parte dated May 27, 2024.
The applicants are seeking an order restraining Aminu Ado-Bayero, and four other dethroned emirs of Bichi, Rano, Gaya and Karaye from parading themselves as emirs. Read more
Reps introduced 1,351 bills, passed 89 legislations in one year — Abbas (Tribune)
Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, on Tuesday, disclosed that the Green Chamber of the National Assembly in its first legislative session introduced a total of 1,351 bills and successfully passed 89 bills through Third Reading.
He also said that 679 motions were equally introduced within the period under review to reawaken relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to their mandates.
It will be recalled that the 10th House was inaugurated on June 13, 2023, with the emergence of Speaker Abbas and Hon. Benjamin Kalu as the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker respectively. Read more
FG establishes advisory and ministerial taskforce to combat malaria in Nigeria (VON)
The Federal Government Nigeria has taken a significant step toward eliminating malaria in Nigeria by establishing the Advisory on Malaria Elimination in Nigeria (AMEN) and the Ministerial Task Force on Malaria Elimination.
This initiative was announced by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, during the inauguration of the advisory board and task force in Abuja, Nigeria.
In a statement by SA, Media & External Relations to the CMH&SW, Tashikalmah Hallah, Prof Pate highlighted the substantial burden malaria places on Nigeria, including high mortality and morbidity rates, lost work hours, and significant financial costs for both individuals and the government. Senate urges FG to make emergency provisions for victims of flooding in Abia (Vanguard)
The Senate has called on the Federal Government through the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation and National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA to as a matter of urgency, make emergency provision available to cushion the effects on victims of the affected communities in Abia North Senatorial District of Abia State.
The Senate has also urged the Federal Ministries of Housing and Urban Development and Power to rehabilitate some of the collapsed homes, roads and electric installations within the affected areas.
The Upper Chamber has asked the Ecological Fund Department of the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and the Federal Ministry of Environment and Ecological Management to urgently assess the extent of damage on erosion Sites of the areas with a view to providing some measures of rebuilding the damaged environment created by this ugly incidence. Pink took to social media to share an update on her health after it was announced earlier in the day that her concert in Switzerland on Wednesday, July 3 would be canceled.
The 44-year-old’s team shared a statement that appears when an attempt is made to purchase tickets for the show, as part of the Summer Carnival Tour, at the Wankdorf Stadium in Bern, revealing that she was advised on doctor’s orders to not perform.

Dozens rally in Pakistan after a Christian man is sentenced to death for blasphemy (ABC)
Dozens of members from Pakistan’s civil society rallied on Tuesday in the southern port city of Karachi against the death sentence handed down to a Christian man on blasphemy charges, nearly a year after one of the worst mob attacks on Christians in the country.
Several Christians also joined the rally which comes a day after a court in Sahiwal in the Punjab province announced the death sentence to Ehsan Shan after finding him guilty of sharing “hateful content” against Muslims on social media.
Shan’s lawyer Khurram Shahzad said on Monday he will appeal the verdict. Read more
Ian McKellen exits ‘Player Kings’ stage drama after he is injured in fall (UPI)
Lord of the Rings and X-Men icon Ian McKellen has bowed out of the planned national tour of Player Kings after he was recently injured in a fall during a West End performance in stage drama.
McKellen, 85, is following doctor’s orders by exiting the play and in order to make a full recovery, according to the drama’s producers.
David Semark, McKellen’s understudy, took over McKellen’s role of Falstaff after McKellen lost his footing during a fight scene and fell two weeks ago. Read more

2 aid workers killed in the latest violent attack in eastern Congo’s conflict (AfricaNews)
Two staff members of the foreign aid group Tearfund were killed when their convoy was attacked in eastern Congo, the organization said, the latest in a series of attacks targeting aid groups and residents in the region.
The aid workers were killed on Sunday after their convoy had arrived in Butembo city in North Kivu province, where armed rebels have been fighting Congolese security forces, the organization said in a statement late Monday.
It wasn’t immediately clear which group was behind the attack. More than 120 armed groups in eastern Congo have been carrying out attacks, often involving bombs targeting residents, as they seek a share of the region’s gold and other resources. Read more
Supreme Court to hear challenge to Texas pornography restriction (NBC)
The Supreme Court on Tuesday agreed to hear a free speech challenge to a provision of a Texas law seeking to prevent young people from accessing pornographic content online.
The justices took up an appeal brought by the Free Speech Coalition, a pornography industry trade group, as well as several companies.
