Man detained 14 years without trial freed, suffers mental disorder (Nation)

The Court of Appeal in Lagos has freed Idris Musa who was detained for 14 years without trial.

He was arrested in 2010 by the police over the murder of one Ali Kolo and developed a mental disorder while in Kirikiri prison.

The appellate court took notice of the evidence that the appellant had developed a mental disorder following his long years of incarceration and ordered that he be released unconditionally. Read more

Police arrest Portable over G-Wagon debt (Tribune)

The Lagos State Police Command apprehended the popular musician Habeeb Okikiola, better known as Portable, on Tuesday.

Portable was arrested for failing to settle a debt he incurred when purchasing a G-Wagon from a car dealer in the state.

According to the report, Portable only paid N13 million out of the N27 million for the vehicle and has since refused to pay the remaining N14 million. Read more

25-year-old man ‘beats girlfriend to death’ in Akwa Ibom (DailyTrust)

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a 25-year-old man simply identified as Elisha for allegedly beating his girlfriend to death. 

Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Timfon John, who confirmed the incident on Tuesday in Uyo, said the case is under investigation and the suspect is undergoing interrogation.

“The suspect has been arrested and the command has commenced investigation into the murder already and in the next couple of days we will unravel the matter,” the PPRO said. Read more

Police arraign 2 Tiktokers for defaming Lagos monarch, Oba Elegushi (Punch)

Two Tiktokers – Adesola James and Odunmosun Awiye, were on Tuesday arraigned before the Federal High Court, Lagos State, for cyberstalking, illegal publication and defamation of character against the monarch of Ikate-Elegunshi, Oba Saheed Elegushi.

The defendants, known as Arifanla Jogun Omo Odo Agba and Okiki-OshunT, respectively, were arraigned before Justice Abimbola Awogboro on four counts bordering on conspiracy, cyberbullying and defamation.

The police prosecutor, Nosa Uhumwangho, told the court that the duo committed the offences between December 2023 and March 2024. Read more

A teenage student, Benjamin Basil, who was apprehended by security operatives at a bank in Jos with devices suspected to be bomb explosives while trying to rob them of N100m on Tuesday narrated how kidnappers forced him into the act.

Speaking with PUNCH Online on Tuesday at the police Command headquarters in Jos where he was paraded alongside other suspects, Basi who identified himself as a student of the Plateau State Polytechnic said

“My name is Benjamin Basil. I’m an ND 1 student at Plateau State Polytechnic studying Civil Engineering. I’m 17 years old and I reside opposite the Police Staff College in Jos. So yesterday (May 13) I was on my way to school around 9 am and I was kidnapped along the way near the police staff college. Read more

Tinubu receives report on extended continental shelf project, commends team (Sun)

President Bola Tinubu has received the report of the High Powered Presidential Committee (HPPC) on Nigeria’s Extended Continental Shelf Project, which aims to extend Nigeria’s maritime boundaries in accordance with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), 1982.

Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, in a statement said the President commended to the team of experts who worked hard over the years to advance the project.

The technical presentations were made by Larry Awosika, a marine scientist and member of the Committee, and Aliyu Omar, Secretary of the HPPC, at the State House Abuja. Read more

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, yesterday, alleged that foreign missions based in Nigeria use third parties to transact in foreign currencies.

EFCC’s acting Director of Public Affairs, Wilson Uwujaren, disclosed this in an interview on Arise Television.

On May 11, a report showed that EFCC sent an advisory letter, titled ”EFCC Advisory to Foreign Missions against Invoicing in US Dollar,” to Yusuf Tuggar, Minister of Foreign Affairs. Read more

Canadian author Alice Munro, a 2013 Nobel Prize winner for literature, has died at the age of 92.

Munro wrote short stories for more than 60 years, often focusing on life in rural Canada.

Huge manhunt launched in France as gunmen kill 2 guards, free inmate from prison van (JerusalemPost)

At least two French prison guards were shot dead and three others seriously injured on Tuesday after heavily armed men ambushed a  van to free an inmate, French police said, triggering a major manhunt.

The orchestrated attack, which comes amid rising drug-linked violence across Europe, took place around 0900 GMT at a toll booth in Incarville in the Eure region of northern France. The unnamed inmate and the attackers escaped, police said.

Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin said a major manhunt had been launched. Read more 

More than half a million Palestinians flee as Israel escalates Gaza attacks (AlJazeera)

Israeli forces have intensified attacks across Gaza, bombarding a refugee camp in the centre of the Strip as tanks pushed deeper into eastern parts of Rafah city in the south.

In the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza, Israeli warplanes struck a home on Tuesday, killing at least 14 Palestinians, including children, the official Palestinian news agency WAFA reported.

The Israeli military ordered more residents to evacuate in parts of the north, where battles between Israeli soldiers and Hamas fighters have resumed in recent days after Israel sent troops back into the area, months after claiming it had defeated Hamas there. Read more

Texas mum says police held her face in pile of fire ants, covering head and neck with hundreds of bite marks (NBC)

A Texas woman accused police officers in Santa Fe of holding her face down in a pile of fire ants, leaving bite marks all over her head and chest.

Taylor Rogers said the incident occurred on Aug. 19, 2021, while she took her son to school. Rogers alleged in a federal civil lawsuit that an officer came running up to her vehicle yelling for her to stop. She initially filed the suit in July and amended it in January.

Rogers “panicked and drove the wrong way” down a bus-only lane, according to the lawsuit. The suit said Rogers has mental illness and suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder stemming from a previous encounter with police. Read more

At least 4 persons rescued from collapsed building in Nairobi (AfricaNews)

Earmarked for demolition but now collapsed. At least four people were rescued from the rubble of the collapsed building in the Mathare neighborhood of Kenya’s capital on Tuesday.

Three of them were critically injured, while one person sustained minor injuries. The Kenya Red Cross has said more people were likely to be trapped in the rubble.

The building was undergoing demolition when it collapsed, the Red Cross said. Read more

British twin saves sister from crocodile, receives award from King Charles III (UPI)

A 31-year-old British woman who saved her twin sister from the jaws of a crocodile while on a Mexican vacation has been cited by King Charles III for “exemplary bravery,” the British government said.

Georgia Laurie, from Sandhurst, Berkshire, a few dozen miles southwest of London, received the King’s Gallantry Medal, according to a news release.

While on vacation in June 2021 in Puerto Escondido near Mexico’s southern tip along the Pacific Ocean, the Laurie sisters had been told wrongly they could swim in a river off Manialtepec Lagoon in the Mexican state of Oaxaca. Read more
