Man detained for assaulting doctor after wife’s death – Police (Punch)
The Edo State Police Command, on Sunday, explained why it detained one Christopher Owegie whose wife died at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital on Saturday.
A statement by the state Commissioner of Police, Funsho Adegboye, noted that Owegie was briefly detained after assaulting the medical doctor who attended to his wife before she died.
In the statement made available to newsmen in Benin by Chidi Nwabuzor, the command’s spokesperson, Adegboye said Owogie was kept in safe custody, counselled for about an hour, and released unconditionally. Read more

Popular content creator, Pelumi Nubi has completed a solo road trip from London to Lagos.

Tinubu arrives Lagos for Eid-El-Fitr celebrations (Channels)
President Bola Tinubu, on Sunday, arrived in Lagos State for the Eid-El-Fitr celebrations.
The President left Abuja and was welcomed to Lagos by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has replied his predecessor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, who accused him of failure.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Edwin Olofu, Ganduje had said Governor Yusuf was shifting public glare from the fact that there is nothing on the ground in the state to justify the sharp increase in statutory allocations to the state since the inception of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration.

2 UniAbuja students win N1.5m grant to carry out research (Leadership)
Two undergraduate students of the University of Abuja (UniAbuja) have won a total grant of ₦1,522,980 to undertake research in their chosen thematic areas.
Ajewole Peter Tosin and Muhammed Halima Idris, both students of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University, will lead their respective team of researchers to carry out the research.
Tosin and team will work on the use of low green technology for the preservation of beans and maize and food security, while Halima Idris and her co-researchers are studying the use of orange peels as repellents for mosquitoes. Read more
NSCDC repels bandit attack on FG’s silo in Katsina (Channels)
Agro Rangers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, on Saturday, repelled an attack by suspected bandits on the Federal Government’s grain silo in the Dutsinma Local Government Area of Katsina State.
In a statement on Sunday, the spokesman for the NSCDC, Buhari Hamisu, said the bandits who carried out the attack at about 1 a.m., wanted to destroy the silo and abduct its manager, Mr Lawal Shitu-Yar’adua.
According to Hamisu, the Agro Rangers responded swiftly, engaging the bandits in a fierce gun duel for over two hours. Read more
Police nab hotelier for alleged murder of staff in Imo (Nation)
Operatives of Obowo Divisional Headquarters, have arrested the owner of ‘Our Guest House’ at Umulogho in Obowo Local Government Area of Imo State, Ibe Obasi, 38,, who was allegedly involved in the murder of a 25-year-old staff Ebuka Udemba.
Ebuka, an indigene of Umuokpa in Obowo LGA, was reportedly killed by the suspect and two military personnel over missing phone belonging to the officer.
According to the statement by the Imo police spokesman Henry Okoye, the preliminary investigations revealed that the victim was tortured and locked up inside the generator room by the suspect and two others at large where he suffocated to death, on the accusation of stealing a customer’s handset. Rwanda is commemorating the 30th anniversary of the 1994 genocide in Rwanda.
More than 1 million people — mostly from the Tutsi minority ethnic group, but also moderates from the Hutu majority who tried to protect Tutsis — were systematically murdered by Hutu extremists during a 100-day killing spree that started on April 7, 1994.

British man running length of Africa nears finish line (AfricaNews)
A man from the UK who has been running the length of Africa for charity set off from the Tunisian city of Bizerte on Sunday in what he hoped would be the last leg of his long journey.
Russ Cook, who calls himself the “Hardest Geezer”, began the challenge in April last year, starting out in the southernmost point of the African continent, Cape Agulhas in South Africa.
He crossed over into Tunisia on Thursday night and says he aims to complete the mammoth feat by Sunday, ending at the northernmost point of the continent in Cape Angela. Read more

A trainee anaesthetist has been jailed after stealing drugs from the London NHS hospital he worked at to inject his girlfriend with during sex.
Jonathon Dean, 32, was sentenced to two years and one month in prison after taking various drugs from Whipps Cross Hospital, Leytonstone between 2018 and 2023.

Terminally ill Palestinian prisoner Walid Daqqa dies in Israeli custody (AlJazeera)
Imprisoned Palestinian novelist and activist Walid Daqqa, who was suffering from cancer, has died in Israel’s Shamir Medical Center, according to the Palestinian Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs.
Daqqa was from Baqa al-Gharbiyye, a predominantly Palestinian city in Israel, and had served for 38 years in Israeli prisons, the commission added, before saying that he had died as a result of a “slow killing” policy carried out against ill prisoners by the Israeli prison administration.
Protesters have gathered in Ramallah in memory of one of the most prominent Palestinian prisoners, who was due to be released next year. Read more

A Kentucky man admitted to faking his own death to avoid paying over $100,000 in outstanding child support to his ex-wife, according to a plea agreement filed in federal court late last month.
Jesse E. Kipf, 39, pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated identity theft and one count of computer fraud in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Kentucky on March 29. According to the plea agreement, Kipf accessed the Hawaii death registry system in January 2023 using the details of a doctor living in another state and created a case for own death. He then “assigned himself as the medical certifier for the case and certified that case,” which resulted in Kipf being listed as deceased in many government databases. Read more

Ethiopian runners win men’s and women’s races at Paris Marathon (France24)
Mulugeta Uma and Mestawut Fikir won the Paris Marathon men’s and women’s races on Sunday to give Ethiopia a double in the event for the first time in five years.
On a course that was different from the Olympic event in August, Uma won with a time of 2:05:33, beating Kenyans Titus Kipruto and Elisha Rotich.
Kipruto finished 15 seconds behind Uma while Rotich was more than a minute behind. Rotich was the pre-race favourite going into the event having set the course record in 2021. Read more
