Man in custody for allegedly defrauding Thai $216k, N30m (Punch)

The Lagos State Police Command says it arrested one Chimereze Chinedu for allegedly defrauding a Thai national to the tune of $216,000 and N30m respectively.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, in a statement made available on X.com on Tuesday, disclosed that the suspect allegedly promised to supply his victim with 37 tricycles which he valued at $216,000.

The suspect in a move to further extort money from his victim was said to have forged letters from the State Criminal Investigation Department to lure his victim into believing that the tricycles were seized by the police. Read more

Failed robbery: Lagos varsity students escape death (Punch)

Two Lagos State University students, who have not yet been named, were allegedly injured by a stray bullet on Monday after an attempted robbery at a residential area for students, known as PPL in the Ojo area of the state.

PUNCH Online had earlier reported that the victims had been hit by stray bullets outside the school campus when they went to purchase food around 8pm.

An X user, posting as #belikebaddy, said, “Two students have been shot at PPL, Ojo, Lagos. Please, students of LASU, stay indoors and don’t go out.” Read more

NDLEA declares India-based Nigerian couple wanted, arrests four cartel members (Punch)

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has declared a couple, Kazeem Omogoriola Owoalade and Rashidat Ayinke Owoalade, wanted for running a cocaine cartel from India.

This follows the arrest of four members of the syndicate in Lagos, where a Sports Utility Vehicle was recovered and two houses traced to them were sealed for forfeiture to the Federal Government.

This was made known in a statement signed by the agency’s Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, and shared on its website on Sunday. Read more

Police rescue 2 toddlers locked up in Lagos apartment (Punch)

The Lagos State Police Command has rescued two infants who were locked up in an apartment on Adelakun Street, in the Iju Ishaga area of Lagos State.

The toddlers, PUNCH Metro gathered, were found in a state of neglect when the rescue operation took place.

A rights group, Advocate for Children and Vulnerable Persons Network, alleged that the mother of the infants had been grappling with substance abuse. Read more

Man stabs friend to death over N2500 debt in Lagos (Punch)

A man, Taiwo Badejo, has allegedly stabbed his friend, identified simply as Monday, to death over N2,500 debt in the Oko Oba area of Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro gathered that Badejo and Monday were arguing over the money when the argument degenerated into a fight between them on Friday.

Communicating with our correspondent on Saturday, a resident, Tope Ajise, who lives on Egbatedo Street along the Old Oko Oba area where the incident took place, told our correspondent that people tried to pacify the duo but the matter was further escalated. Read more

How court jailed Lagos surgeon over failed plastic surgery (Punch)

Justice Muhammad Liman of the Federal High Court in Lagos, on Friday, convicted and sentenced a cosmetic surgeon, Dr Anuoluwapo Adepoju, to one-year imprisonment for a failed plastic surgery on Nneka Onwuzuligbo in 2020.

The judge handed down the verdict on the convicted doctor, after analysing all the submissions of both the prosecution and the lawyer of the deceased.

Justice Liman, however, ordered the convict to pay the sum of N100,000, in lieu of the jail term.

The convict was arraigned before the court alongside her clinic, MedContour Services Limited, by the Federal Competition and Consumers Protection Commission, on five counts bordering on a refusal to honour an invitation for an investigation into post-body surgery complications, as well as the production of investigation documents. NURTW member, 2 others jailed for drug trafficking (Punch)

A 45-year-old driver and member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, Tapha Mustapha, and two others, were on Thursday convicted and sentenced to two years’ imprisonment for trafficking hard drugs.

Other convicts sentenced alongside the NURTW member are Andrew Ukelere and Anthony Chiemerem.

The three convicts were earlier arraigned before the court by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, on April 27, 2024, on charges bordering on conspiracy, trafficking in 13.9 kilograms of tramadol and 590 litres of Pentazocine, a psychotropic drug similar to cocaine.

During their arraignment, the prosecutor, Mariam I. Erondu, who was represented by Julian Negedu, told the court that the convicts were arrested with the drugs on March 19, 2024, on the Long Bridge area of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Lagos State. Read more

Painter bags life jail for raping 20–year–old student (Punch)

Justice Rahman Oshodi of the Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court on Tuesday convicted and sentenced a painter, Sikiru Oluwasegun, to life imprisonment for raping a 20-year-old woman.

The judge found Oluwasegun guilty of having sexual intercourse with the survivor (name withheld), without her consent on July 19, 2021, at 3:45 am in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State.

Justice Oshodi handed down the jail term after he resolved the issue for determination in favour of the prosecution who tendered the convict’s confessional statement as evidence. Read more

EFCC hands over $22k recovered from convicted fraudster to FBI (Channels)

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) says it has handed over $22,000 recovered from a convicted internet fraudster Hakeem Olanrewaju to the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI).

In a Saturday statement, the EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale said the money was handed over to the FBI on Friday in Lagos State.

“We are delighted to be handing over this proceeds of crime today,” the Acting Director of the EFCC Lagos Zonal Command Michael Wetkas said. “The EFCC is willing and always ready to do more.” Read more

Evans re-arraignment for murder stalled, defendants opts for plea bargain (Channels)

The scheduled arraignment of convicted kidnap kingpin, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike popularly known as Evans, failed to go on Thursday at the Lagos High Court sitting in Ikeja, owing to the absence of his counsel.

Trial judge, Justice Adenike Coker subsequently adjourned till June 13 for the planned arraignment.

Evans and his co-defendant, Joseph Emeka are facing an amended 5-count charge of murder, attempt to kidnap and conspiracy. Read more

EFCC arrests 13 fake BDC operators in Lagos (Channels)

Operatives of the Lagos Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), have arrested thirteen fake Bureau De Change operators in Lagos.

A statement by the commission’s Head, Media & Publicity, Dele Oyewale, on Tuesday, said they were arrested for operating BDC without an appropriate licence.

The suspects are Abdullahi Musa, Garba Abdullahi, Dauda Hussaini, Jubril Musa, Abdulwaheed Iliyasu and Abubakar Mohammed. Read more
