APM Terminals: Lagos-Ibadan Standard Gauge instrumental to our green agenda (ThisDay)

Terminal Manager, APM Terminals Apapa, Steen Knudsen, has said the construction of the new standard gauge line by the federal government is key to supporting the Nigerian economy as it would provide a cost-efficient means of moving cargo inland from the port. He noted that this is in line with the company’s agenda of making its entire supply chain eco-friendly, by using the synergies of moving more cargo in one go.

Speaking during an interactive session with journalists, Knudsen said APM Terminals is a global terminal operator that has deployed international best practices in facilitating trade in Nigeria.

“While a narrow-gauge railway line connecting to Kano is in operation at the terminal, the construction of the new standard gauge line by the Federal Government will further enhance the delivery of cargo through the rail.

“Once the Standard Gauge becomes operational, we are hopeful that a lot more cargo will move on the rail which will also help our green agenda because moving cargo on rail is much more environmentally friendly than by trucks,” Knudsen said. Read more

NANS to state varsities: Resume work, your decision to join strike unpatriotic (Vanguard)

THE National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, has faulted the decision of state universities to join ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU.

To this end, the leadership of the Nigerian students’ body, which labelled the action of lecturers of public universities in Nigeria as ‘unpatriotic and wicked’, asked those of state universities to immediately detach from the action and resume work.

NANS president, Sunday Asefon, in a statement to this effect, yesterday, said ASUU had lost the support of Nigerian students, given the unpatriotic disposition displayed by them in extending their strike indefinitely.

Asefon said students would no longer support the union’s call for intervention as he accused the body of being self-serving.

Asefon alleged that the decision to extend the industrial action after six months was easy for ASUU because they keep employment at various private universities around the country.

In a swift reaction, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, ASUU President, said his union did not ask for students’ help before it embarked on a strike.

Nigeria slowly moving towards dictatorship, says Jonathan (DailyTrust)

The former president stated this at the 70th birthday celebration of Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Matthew Hassan Kukah, held at Sheraton Hotel in Abuja.

Speaking on the theme of the event, ‘Nigeria’s Unfinished Greatness: Next Steps’, Jonathan urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and united to choose leaders that will lead the nation to the promised land.

He said, “The task before all of us is not to lower our guard, lest the democracy we cherish today, succumbs to threats and recedes into fascism tomorrow and there are signs already.

“Looking at the states and so on, we are derailing towards quasi fascist form of government but democracy is not only about winning elections alone, it is about accommodation.

“We as leaders at the centre and at the state level, especially at this time when elections are coming must accommodate different views.”

Jonathan urged the youths that have registered for the 2023 elections to endeavour to walk their talk by making sure they vote on election day.

Dignitaries at the occasion were Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu; his running mate, Senator Kashim Shettima; Governor of Ekiti State, Kayode Fayemi; Governor of Plateau State, Simon Lalong and Secretary to Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha.

Others were Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos, Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun, Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom, former governor of Imo State, Emeka Ihedioha; and former governor of Bayelsa State, Seriake Dickson. Read more

2023: Nigeria has entered a critical stage – INEC (DailyTrust)

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said the nation has entered a critical stage ahead of the 2023 general elections.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, said this at an ‘Expert Meeting on Conducting Elections in Volatile Security Environment’, organised in collaboration with the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) in Abuja, on Thursday.

He said all hands must be on deck to ensure the success of the elections.

In the next 19 days that is on 20th September 2022, the commission will publish the final list of candidates for national elections (Presidential, Senatorial and House of Representatives) as provided in Section 32(1) of the Electoral Act 2022 and the Timetable and Schedule of Activities released by the commission.

“This will be followed on 4th October 2022 by the publication of the final list of candidates for State elections (Governorship and State Houses of Assembly). NANS wants varsity lecturers sacked over indefinite strike (ThisDay)

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has urged the federal government to apply its power to “hire and fire” any employee while dealing with the university lecturers over the declaration of indefinite strike.

It accused the Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU) of advertently promoting the private universities, where many of them currently work and have their wards.

NANS considered the decision by ASUU to declare indefinite strike after six months of warning industrial action as not only “unpatriotic and unnecessary, but wicked and definitely meant to collapse the public universities and promote private ones.”

The student union President, Sunday Asefon, stated these in a statement while reacting to ASUU declaration of indefinite strike last week to press for some pending demands for lecturers.

Asefon stated that such decision was easy for ASUU to take because many of their leaders don’t have their wards in public universities and that many lecturers are employees of various private universities across the country. Read more

Putin to snub Gorbachev funeral due to work schedule (Guardian)

Vladimir Putin will not attend the funeral of Mikhail Gorbachev, the last leader of the Soviet Union, the Kremlin has said, in what will be seen as an extraordinary snub by the Russian president.

Gorbachev, who died on Tuesday at 91, will also not receive an official state funeral, a Kremlin spokesperson indicated, making him the first leader since Nikita Khrushchev not to be given that honour.

The spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, said schedule constraints meant Putin would not attend a public farewell ceremony at Moscow’s House of Unions, or the funeral at Novodevichy cemetery on Saturday. “Unfortunately, the president’s work schedule will not allow him,” Peskov said.

Putin did pay his respects to the Soviet leader on Thursday morning, leaving flowers by Gorbachev’s coffin at the mourning hall of Moscow’s Central Clinical hospital. Read more

Kanye West takes aim at outgoing Adidas CEO and Kid Cudi in fake newspaper headline (Billboard)

Extra, extra: another day, another fake headline by Kanye West. The rapper used social media to slam both the outgoing CEO of Adidas and Kid Cudi on Thursday (Sept. 1).

“KASPER RØRSTED ALSO DEAD AT 60,” the headline reads on a faux copy of The New York Times Ye posted on his Instagram, referencing the Danish businessman stepping down as head of the sportswear brand after six years as CEO. (In June, West feuded publicly with Rørsted, calling out the CEO in a lengthy Instagram post for alleged “blatant copying” of his Yeezy Slides designs.) The 21-time Grammy winner captioned his post, “God Loves Us.”

However, the Yeezy Gap designer’s legions of followers were also quick to hone in on the fine print below the giant headline, which continues, “I know what you’re thinking… who is Kaspar? but even less importantly, who is Kid Cudi?” Read more

His goals helped Xavi’s side qualify for the Champions League last term but Barcelona’s perilous financial plight, added with the arrival of Robert Lewandowski, has prompted them to cash in on the 33-year-old forward.

Aubameyang, who scored 92 goals across 163 games for Arsenal, has signed a two-year contract at Chelsea with an option for a further 12 months with the Blues understood to be paying a fee in the region of £10million. Read more

Sancho seals 3rd successive win for Man Utd (BBC)

Manchester United reeled off their third successive Premier League win under new manager Erik ten Hag to ensure Leicester City’s troubled start to the season continued at King Power Stadium.

Jadon Sancho’s smooth finish from Marcus Rashford’s pass after 23 minutes maintained United’s recent revival and allowed them to build on victories at home to Liverpool and away to Southampton.

United remained largely in control against an out of sorts Leicester, who remain bottom as they search for their first league win of the season and who, along with manager Brendan Rodgers, felt the impatience of the home fans.

Visiting keeper David de Gea was forced into a fine save from James Maddison’s free-kick in the second half but otherwise United were rarely troubled, with Casemiro emerging as a substitute and Cristiano Ronaldo, another late replacement, coming close with an acrobatic bicycle kick. Read more
