Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” – Nelson Mandela
In November 2009, the United Nations General Assembly declared 18 July “Nelson Mandela International Day” to honour the former South African president’s lifelong dedication to peace, freedom, and human dignity.
According to a statement by Obijiofor Aginam, Director, UNESCO MGIEP, the resolution highlights Mandela’s legacy in areas such as conflict resolution, racial harmony, human rights, gender equality, child welfare, and poverty eradication.

Each year, UNESCO marks this day to celebrate a man who not only shaped the 20th century but also continues to influence the 21st. His ideals of justice, democracy, and reconciliation resonate across continents and generations.
As the world commemorates Mandela Day 2025, let us reflect on his enduring message. In an increasingly turbulent world, education remains our surest path to peace and sustainable development. Mandela’s words are not just a call to action—they are a roadmap for building a more just and compassionate global society.
