Many feared trapped as uncompleted building collapses in Lagos (Punch)
Panic erupted in the Ota-Ona area of Ikorodu, Lagos State, after an uncompleted two-storey building collapsed on Monday afternoon, leaving many feared trapped beneath the rubble.
According to Facebook user, Rasheed Fatuga, who raised the alarm, said the uncompleted storey building located directly opposite the Mobil Filling Station(formerly Bugon Filling Station) in the Ota-Ona area, caved in this afternoon, leaving an unspecified number of people trapped.
As of the time of this report, five victims have been rescued alive, but the exact number of people still trapped remains unknown. Read more
Police summon officers caught in viral video extorting motorists (Channels)
The Nigeria Police Force has identified and summoned a group of officers involved in extorting motorists.
A video, which circulated widely on Monday, showed a police officer demanding either ₦5,000 or five litres of fuel from travellers in Benin City, Edo State, who were unable to present proof of Electronic Central Motor Registry (ECMR) registration.
In response, the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, while condemning the act, said those behind the action have been summoned. Read more

President Bola Tinubu has written to the House of Representatives seeking approval for three major financial proposals involving external and domestic borrowings amounting to billions of dollars, euros, and naira.
In a set of letters read on Tuesday during plenary by the Speaker, Abbas Tajudeen, the president requested legislative backing for the federal government’s external borrowing rolling plan for 2025–2026, a $2 billion foreign currency bond issuance in the domestic market, and the issuance of bonds to clear outstanding pension liabilities under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).
In the first letter, Tinubu sought the House’s approval to raise up to $2 billion through the issuance of foreign currency-denominated financial instruments in Nigeria’s domestic debt market. Fresh details have emerged indicating that prominent Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, was aware of the entry restriction imposed on him by Saudi Arabian authorities before he embarked on the 2025 Hajj pilgrimage.
The Cleric had on Monday claimed in a public statement on his official Facebook page titled “My Hajj 2025!” that he was turned back at the Medina airport on Saturday despite holding a valid visa.
However, an official at the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), who spoke on the condition of anonymity, explained to The Guardian on Tuesday that Sheikh Gumi had “since been banned from entry into the Kingdom” and was fully aware of the restriction placed on him. Read more

These strategic goals were disclosed during the 2025 Ministerial Press Briefing addressed by Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Engr. Biodun Ogunleye, during the ministerial press briefing to commemorate six years in office of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
Ogunleye mentioned that key among the ministry’s forward-looking initiatives is the full implementation of the Lagos Electricity Market structure under the Lagos State Electricity Law, 2024 which will involve licensing independent electricity distribution companies, supporting embedded generation, and operationalizing the Lagos Independent System Operator (LISO) to stabilize the power ecosystem. 8 kidnapped WASSCE students, 11 others rescued in Rivers after 21-days (Nation)
The eight candidates of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) abducted by pirates along the Bille waterways in Degema Local Government Area of Rivers States have been rescued after spending 21 days in captivity.
The victims were rescued on Monday evening by a local security outfit, the Royal Fouchee Security Services’ popularly known as the Amama Soldiers.
The outfit belongs to a former leader of the Niger Delta Peoples’ Volunteer Force (NDPVF) and current Amayanabo (King) of Torusaramapiri in Degema LGA, Alj. Mujahid Asari-Dokubo. Read more

Faced with a staggering tax compliance crisis, the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has revealed that only between 10 and 19 per cent of Nigerians pay taxes, making it one of the lowest compliance rates on the continent.
Speaking at the public presentation of a new children’s tax education book titled “Taxation: Essential Knowledge for Nigerian Children,” in Abuja, on Tuesday, May 27, FIRS Executive Chairman Dr Zacch Adedeji said the figures are drawn from both internal studies and external research.
Adedeji, who was represented by his Special Adviser on Research and Statistics, Aisha Hamman, said: “First of all, I want to say that we have done a couple of studies and found that tax compliance is positively correlated with tax education. So, when children are educated, they grow up to become responsible individuals, pay their taxes, and do what is right. Our studies have shown that only 19 per cent of Nigerians pay tax. Read more

Churchill photo thief sentenced to two years in jail (BBC)
A Canadian man has been sentenced to almost two years in prison for stealing a famous photograph of Sir Winston Churchill known as “The Roaring Lion”.
Jeffrey Wood had pleaded guilty to stealing the original print from Ottawa’s Château Laurier hotel between Christmas 2021 and early January 2022. He also admitted committing forgery.
The photo of Britain’s war-time prime minister, taken by Yousuf Karsh in 1941, features on the UK £5 note. Read more

Three former Algerian presidential candidates have been sentenced to 10 years in jail for corruption on Monday.
Businesswoman Saïda Neghza, former minister Belkacem Sahli and head of a veterinary products laboratory Abdelhakim Hamadi also received a 1 million dinars fine (about €6,700).

Russia and Ukraine have launched a wave of drone attacks against each other overnight, even as Moscow claimed it was finalising a peace proposal to end the war.
Ukrainian air force officials said on Tuesday that Russia deployed 60 drones across multiple regions through the night, injuring 10 people. Kyiv’s air defences intercepted 43 of them – 35 were shot down while eight were diverted using electronic warfare systems.
In Dnipropetrovsk, central Ukraine, Governor Serhiy Lysak reported damage to residential properties and an agricultural site after Russian drones led to fires during the night.
