Margot Robbie has said she feels “so happy” that Lady Gaga is taking on the role of Harley Quinn in Joker: Folie à deux.
MTV News’ Josh Horowitz recently asked the actress – who played the anarchic supervillain across three movies between 2016 and 2021 – if it feels weird or cool that someone so famous will deliver a fresh interpretation of her beloved Harley.
“It makes me so happy, because I said from the beginning all I want is for Harley Quinn to be one of those characters that… the way like Macbeth or Batman always gets passed from great actor to great actor, and it’s kind of like someone gets to do their Batman or someone gets to do their Macbeth, you know?” Robbie explained.
“It’s such an honour to have built a foundation strong enough that Harley can now be one of those characters that other actors get to have a go at playing, and I think she’ll do something incredible with it.”
Gaga isn’t the only huge star joining Joaquin Phoenix’s Arkham Asylum musical, either, as just last month it was confirmed that Brendan Gleeson (The Banshees of Inisherin) had landed a mystery part in the film.
Jacob Lofland (Maze Runner) is also on board in a supporting role, playing an inmate at Arkham Asylum who develops a relationship with Phoenix’s Joker/Arthur Fleck.
Catherine Keener has also been cast, although no details have been shared about her role other than it being a “major” part. Zazie Beetz is also said to be in talks to return as Sophie Dumond.
Director Todd Phillips also returns behind the camera, after working with Phoenix on 2019’s Joker. (DigitalSpy)
