Maurizio Sarri believes Chelsea produced one of their most ‘important’ performances of the season against Tottenham despite losing the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg 1-0 at Wembley.
Harry Kane’s controversial 26th-minute penalty, after Kepa Arrizabalaga brought down the England striker inside the box, gave Spurs the advantage heading into the return leg at Stamford Bridge.
Referee Michael Oliver consulted the video assistant referee and the VAR camera suggested Kane was onside before Arrizabalaga’s foul. However, Chelsea’s screenshot of their own system showed the forward in an offside position.
Sarri was heavily critical with the officials’ application of VAR when reflecting on the defeat, but Chelsea’s manager was upbeat about his side’s display. Read more
