In a surprising turn of events, conflicting statements have emerged from President Bola Tinubu’s administration regarding his first-anniversary address. As Nigeria marks May 29th, both a day of democracy and the first anniversary of President Tinubu’s tenure, two senior aides have presented opposing narratives on the President’s plans.
On Tuesday, Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, announced that President Tinubu would depart from the tradition of a nationwide broadcast. Instead, he claimed, the President would address a joint session of the National Assembly.
Onanuga detailed a comprehensive program, highlighting Tinubu’s achievements and commemorating Nigeria’s democratic progress since the military ceded power in 1999. The event was set to feature prominent figures, including former Senate President David Mark, Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, and former military ruler General Abdulsalami Abubakar. Following these speeches, President Tinubu was expected to inaugurate the National Assembly Library and Resource Centre, newly christened the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Building.
However, this announcement was swiftly contradicted by Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity. In a late-night statement, Ngelale firmly denied any plans for President Tinubu to address the National Assembly. He emphasized the administration’s focus on inaugurating strategic projects nationwide, aimed at delivering good governance and benefiting all Nigerians.
Ngelale’s rebuttal highlighted a significant lapse in communication within the administration. “In view of public commentary concerning the President delivering a speech before a Joint Sitting of the National Assembly tomorrow, May 29, 2024, it is important to state that this information is false and unauthorized as the Office of the President was not involved in the planning of the event,” he stated.
The conflicting statements have left Nigerians puzzled about the President’s actual plans for May 29th. While Onanuga painted a picture of a grand legislative address, Ngelale’s firm denial suggests a different agenda focused on project inaugurations. This incident underscores the need for clear and coordinated communication within the President’s team as they strive to meet the expectations of the Nigerian populace.
