May Day: Labour calls for retirement age to be raised to 65 (Channels)
The organised labour in Nigeria is demanding an upward review of the retirement age and service years of all public and civil servants from 60 years to 65 years and from 35 years to 40 years respectively.
This is part of the demands put forward by both the president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Comrades Joe Ajaero and Festus Osifo during the May Day celebration held at the Eagles Square Abuja on Thursday.
At the event, President Bola Tinubu, who was represented at the event, however, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the welfare of Nigerian workers. Read more
FBI, DEA fail to release dossier on Tinubu, seek 90-day extension (Leadership)
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) have informed a United States Court for the District of Columbia on Thursday that they needed an additional 90 days to produce investigation reports related to an alleged drug case involving President Bola Tinubu in the 1990s.
The two US federal agencies made the request in a Joint Status Report submitted to the court, along with the plaintiff in the case, Aaron Greenspan.
However, Greenspan, an American, rejected the proposal and instead suggested a 14-day extension for the FBI and DEA to produce the records. Read more
Sanwo-Olu recommits to workers’ welfare at May Day celebration (Guardian)
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Thursday, during the 2025 Workers Day celebration, recommitted to workers welfare.
As a demonstration of his commitment, the governor adopted all requests presented by labour unions, maintaining that his administration is committed to strengthening the state’s workforce and delivering a more robust public service.
He also promised that next year’s May Day celebration will take place at the fully rehabilitated National Stadium in Surulere. Read more
1 killed in Lagos cult attack (Punch)
A cult clash between rival cult groups in the Owode Ajegunle area of Lagos State has left one person dead.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the incident happened on Monday.
It was gathered that one of the rival cult groups was on a mission to avenge the death of one of them when they ran into another group.
Hoodlums kill Amotekun officer, shoot vigilante in Osun (Tribune)
An operative of the Osun State Security Network Agency, codenamed Amotekun Corps, on Thursday evening announced the death of one of its officers, Lamidi Abiodun, who was said to have been killed by armed hoodlums who ambushed him in the Papa area of Iwo.
However, in another development, one Nurudeen Alowonle, a member of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria, was reported missing, while another, Alex Sola, was shot in the leg.
While announcing the death of the Amotekun officer in a statement, the Command Spokesperson and Public Relations Officer, Yusuf Idowu, said: “Abiodun, alongside his team of Amotekun operatives and some VGN men, had responded to distress calls by farmers from Papa village.” Read more

The Labour Party (LP) members representing Igboeze/Udenu and Igboeze South/Nsukka Federal Constituencies, Mr Dennis Agbo and Mark-Chidi Obetta, respectively, on Thursday defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu.
Defecting along with them was the member representing Nsukka West State Constituency, Mr Malachi-Okey Onyechi.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that on Tuesday, two LP chieftains, Prince Emeka Mamah and Titus Odo, defected to PDP barely two weeks after the LP governorship candidate for the 2023 elections, Chijioke Edeoga, dumped the LP for the PDP. Read more
NLC urges Tinubu to restore democratic order in Rivers State (Sun)
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Rivers State has urged President Bola Tinubu to urgently reinstate democratic governance by restoring the suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
State NLC Chairman Alex Agwanwor made the appeal on Thursday, May 1, during the Workers’ Day celebration at the union’s secretariat in Port Harcourt.
Agwanwor emphasised the strong relationship between workers and their elected representatives, stating, “As workers of Rivers State, we enjoy a good working relationship with our elected representatives under a democratic system of government.” Read more

Food writers accuse popular influencer of plagiarizing their recipes (CNN)
Two top food writers have accused influencer and bakery owner Brooke Bellamy of plagiarizing their recipes in her bestselling book.
Nagi Maehashi, who runs the RecipeTin Eats website, and Sally McKenney, of the Sally’s Baking Addiction site, allege that several recipes in Bellamy’s book “Bake With Brooki,” which is published by Penguin Random House Australia, were copied from their own work — accusations that Bellamy, who has two million followers on TikTok, has denied.
Maehashi, author of the New York Times bestseller “RecipeTin Eats: Dinner,” who has 1.6 million followers on Instagram, set out her allegations in a post on her website Tuesday, publishing her own and Bellamy’s recipes for caramel slice and baklava side by side. Read more

A Different Man star Adam Pearson to play Joseph Merrick in ‘‘The Elephant Man’’ film adaptation (Variety)
Adam Pearson, who featured in A24’s comic noir A Different Man, is set to play the lead role of Joseph Merrick in “The Elephant Man,” a new feature film adaptation of Bernard Pomerance’s Tony-winning play. The screenplay is written by Bernard’s son, Moby Pomerance. Filming is scheduled to begin in spring 2026.
The storyline of Pomerance’s play is an adaptation of the diaries of Dr. Frederick Treves, Merrick’s physician, and spans the years he spent at the London Hospital. During his lifetime, Pomerance received thousands of letters from people around the world stating, “I am The Elephant Man”, a well-known line from the play. Read more

Galatasaray reinforce desire to keep Osimhen permanently (Nation)
Turkish giants Galatasaray has yet again reaffirmed their desire to have Super Eagles ace striker Victor Osimhen on their books on a permanent basis ahead of next season with an official claiming what remains are ‘just details’.
