The Mexican president has said she will send 10,000 soldiers to the US border in a deal with Donald Trump to “pause” the 25% tariff.
Claudia Sheinbaum says she has had a “good conversation” with Trump, where the two discussed a “range of issues”.
She says the call was “long”, lasting at least 30 or 45 minutes. It took place hours before the tariff on goods from Mexico was due to take effect.
“We spoke about our common interests,” she says.
“We said that we’d been working together about migration, which worked well.”
Sheinbaum says there “will be a pause” to the US imposing 25% tariffs on goods from Mexico for a month.
Mexico will also reinforce its shared border with the US with 10,000 National Guard troops, who will be immediately deployed, she adds.
The Mexican president also says she “explained the seriousness” of high-powered weapons arriving over the US border and into the hands of criminal groups.”It gives them firepower,” she says. “We asked that the US also help our country by helping stop this arms trafficking… he agreed.” (Skynews)
