Military, Police move to end rivalry in Lagos (Vanguard)
The Nigerian Army, yesterday, called for immediate end to inter-service rivalry, particularly between the Military and the Police, to adequately tackle crimes in Lagos State. This came as the Army said the Commissioner of Police and his contemporaries in the Army and other senior Military and Police officers should be held responsible for any public quarrel or fight between personnel from both security agencies. General Officer Commanding 81 Division of the Nigerian Army, Major General Enobong Okon, gave this assertion during a courtesy visit on the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Police Command, Imohimi Edgal, in Ikeja. LASG abolishes career progression promotion for performance appraisal (Guardian)
As part of efforts aimed at ensuring efficient service delivery in Lagos, the state government has abolished promoting civil servants based on career progression for performance appraisal. Speaking at a briefing to announce activities to mark this year’s public service week, themed, ‘Transforming Governance to Realize the Sustainable Development Goals’, the Head of Service, Lagos State, Mrs Folasade Adesoye, said it was the reason the state government launched a growth mindset philosophy to replace fixed mindset to institutionalise optimisation of service delivery. ” To this extent, all government officials now have clearly defined job schedules against which their performance will be assessed. This approach is based on the perception that governance must be open, timely, effective and efficient.” Read more
Youths warned against desperate politicians (Nation)
The youth have been urged not to be deceived by people who are desperate for power come. The Southern Youth Leaders Forum gave this warning yesterday. A communique issued by Comrade Odeyemi Oladimeji on behalf of National Committee of Yoruba Youth, Fidelis Nze KSN (Igbo Youth Assembly) and Comrade Nathaniel Ekutu (South South Youth Coalition), hailed the sustained effort of the Federal government and stakeholders in the anti-corruption war. Lagos seeks reduction in crime (Punch)
The Lagos States Government says it has started a new initiative meant to further reduce crime in the state. It said on Wednesday that having realised that shanties, abandoned and illegal structures aided crime, it had decided to clear such in the state, especially in the Abattoir and Oko-Oba, Agege areas. The Chairman of the Lagos State Task Force, CSP Olayinka Egbeyemi, said the task force, on behalf of the government, had served seven-day removal notices to owners and occupiers of illegal structures and shanties in the Abattoir and Oko-Oba, Agege areas. Ndigbo in Lagos harp on peaceful co-existence (Vanguard)
President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Igbo apex socio-cultural group, Lagos branch, Chief Solomon Ogbonna has promised that the newly inaugurated executive would ensure peaceful co-existence among residents in Lagos, especially the Igbo in the next four years. Ogbonna who noted that the Igbos are peaceful people living in different communities in the country including Lagos, said the Igbo have impacted positively in the development and growth of the state. He said: “Ndigbo have come a long way and they are entitled to some privileges in the state which we know can only be secured by team spirit. British Council Partners Communities, CSOs on Lagos Domestic Violence Law (Independent)
The British Council, through the Rule of Law and Anti-corruption (ROLAC), a programme funded by the European Union has partnered with civil society organisations (CSO), communities and the Ministry of Justice to identify priority areas to advance the implementation of Lagos State Domestic Violence (DV) Law. In a focus group discussion which took place in Lagos, Mrs. Priscilia Ankut, a representative of ROLAC enlightened the participants on the relevance of the programme. She said that ROLAC was committed to the implementation of Lagos State DV, access to justice and the need for a peep into the law to find areas that have not been fully implemented. Read more
NUATE threatens legal action over sacked workers (Guardian)
The Nigerian Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) has threatened to sue the Bi-Courtney Aviation Services Ltd. (BASL), if it fails to reinstate 20 employees it recently sacked. The union’s General Secretary, Mr Olayinka Abioye, gave the warning recently in Lagos. Abioye alleged that the workers were sacked by BASL, operators of the Murtala Muhammed Airport 2 (MMA 2), Lagos, for indicating interest to belong to unions in the sector. According to him, if negotiations fail to actualise the desired result, the union may be compelled to institute a legal action against the company. Bi-Courtney had in a statement signed its spokesman, Mr Steve Omolale, said that the threat by the union to disrupt operations at its terminal was, “an act of lawlessness”. Read more
Educationist makes case for children with special needs (Guardian)
Executive Director, BCG Edu Solutions, Dr. Eugenia George has urged the government to formulate policies that would favour children with special needs. As a first step, she said there should be a law that protects these set of people against discrimination. George spoke in Lagos at a talent show and awards programme organised by a non-governmental organisation, Olusoye Compensatory Centre in honour of its founder, Mrs. Ellen Caulcrick said having worked for over 30 years in the training of children with special needs, she could boldly say they have innate potential, which could enhance the country’s productivity if tapped. UNILAG VC to Corona pupils: be focused (Nation)
Vice-Chancellor, University of Lagos, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe has advised graduating pupils of Corona Secondary School in Agbara Ogun State to be focused. At the valedictory ceremony for Class of 2018, the trio of Oluwakorede Akande, Salutorian Stephanie Agana and Omobolanle Alashe, were the cynosure as they walked tall among their peers due to their academic performance. Prof Ogundipe urged the pupils to be managers of their minds, saying “while distractions may be an impediment to realise one’s potential, they should be focused and shouldn’t allow happenings around them to affect their goals”. Speaking on the topic “Nothing but the best”, the scholar attributed the sterling performance and successes recorded by the pupils to perseverance, determination, and commitment to learning. Orile-Ikeja CDA gives residents vocational training (SUN)
Phway Initiator, a non-governmental organisation, recently held a three-day empowerment programme for residents of Orile-Ikeja, Lagos. The event was held at the King’s Palace in Orile, a community that comprised 17 community development associations (CDAs). The emphasis during the programme was on making throw pillows, which are essential items in every home. Other areas of training were hair-making, bag-making, make-ups, curtain settings, and sewing, among others. The programme, which was not gender-based, was attended by women, men as well as girls from the community and its environs. Read more

In what the premium property terms as their official rental yield data for their real estate properties located in Lagos and Abuja, properties in Abuja showed to have more yield than the ones it has in Lagos. PhD scandal: UNILAG disclaims Osun poly rector’s B.Sc (Punch)
The University of Lagos, Akoka, says the embattled rector of Igbajo Polytechnic, Igbajo, Osun State, Akinola Olaolu, did not obtain a Bachelor of Science Degree in Economics from the institution. The Principal Assistant Registrar, Communications Unit, University of Lagos, Mrs Taiwo Oloyede, said the institution did not have a record of him. This is just as Prof. Chibuzo Nwoke, the Vice-Chancellor of Oduduwa University, Ipetumodu, Ile Ife, Osun State, where the rector worked in 2012, said Olaolu’s credentials were fraudulent. Death toll in Lagos bridge accident rises (Guardian)
One more person was recovered dead at the scene yesterday where a containerized truck fell on four vehicles at Ojuelegba on Tuesday night, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has said. This recovery brought to three the number of persons killed in the accident that occurred at about 8:30p.m. A truck with unknown registration number laden with wooden sheets tilted while negotiating the curved part of the bridge, causing the container to fall on three commercial buses and a saloon car down the bridge, leaving many others injured. Hoodlums burgle Ogun politician’s office in Lagos (Punch)
Some hoodlums have reportedly burgled the office of an Ogun State politician, Adepeju Akinyemi, on NBC Road, Ebute, Ikorodu, Lagos State. Punch Metro learnt that the incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, June 19. Akinyemi, who spoke to our correspondent on Wednesday, said he had resumed work for business when he observed that his office had been broken into. He said, “The robbers broke down my door because the key was too strong for them. When I entered, I realised that they had carted away a lot of things, including my laptop, television and speakers. In fact, they ransacked the whole office and scattered my things. I used the stolen equipment for Ikorodu Oga Radio, an online community station I have been running for about two years. Read more
Suspected cultist docked for threatening woman over sex (DailyTrust)
A suspected cultist on Wednesday appeared before an Ikeja magistrates’ court over alleged threat to the life of a woman who refused to have sex with him. Akeem Lawal, 35, who claimed to be a fashion designer, is standing trial on a three-count charge of conspiracy, unlawful society and threat to life. The prosecutor, Insp. Benson Emuerhi, told the court that the accused vowed to kill Miss Dooshima Williams if she would not succumb to his request to have sex with him. Emuerhi told the court that Lawal committed the offences at 10pm on May 12 at Block 5, Olusegun Olusemo St., Parkview, Ikoyi, Lagos.
