Mohbad: US toxicologist’s report received, says Lagos AG (Punch)

The Lagos State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Lawal Pedro (SAN), on Monday, said the toxicology report and other forensic analysis conducted in the United States on the late singer, Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, alias Mohbad, is out.

He said the autopsy report is now with the Lagos State Pathologist, as well as the coroner magistrate.

Pedro revealed this at a press conference while answering questions from journalists on the upcoming strategic stakeholders’ meeting and commemoration of his first year in office, held at the Ministry of Justice Conference Room, Alausa, Ikeja. Read more

Bus conveying Kano Pillars players to Jos crashes (DailyTrust)

Many players of the Kano Pillars FC U-19 team sustained injuries in a road accident on Tuesday while en route to the New Jos Stadium for their Matchday 5 fixture in the inaugural U-19 Youth League against Plateau United U-19.

According to the media directorate of the team, several players and the driver sustained injuries in the accident and have been taken to the hospital for medical attention.

Sen. Musiliu Obanikoro says the proposed law to scrap the 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in Lagos State may undermine grassroots development.

Obanikoro, a former Minister of State for Defence made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

NAN reports that the bill is titled: A Bill for a Law to Provide for Local Government’s System, Establishment And Administration And to Consolidate All Laws On Local Government Administration And Connected Purposes. Read more 

FG asks Supreme Court to dismiss suit seeking to declare EFCC illegal (Vanguard)

The Federal Government, on Tuesday, asked the Supreme Court to dismiss a suit that 19 states of the federation filed to declare operations of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, illegal.

FG, which was represented by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, challenged the competence of the suit which it described as a threat to the ongoing fight against corruption and financial crimes in the country.

The AGF drew the attention of the apex court to a preliminary objection and counter-affidavit that FG filed on October 18 to query the legal propriety of the suit. Read more

Nigeria lost over $500m to cybercrime in 2022, says EFCC (Channels)

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has raised the alarm over the dangers of cybercrime, saying Nigeria lost over $500 million to it in 2022. 

This is according to the Chairman of the anti-graft agency Ola Olukoyede who spoke on Tuesday at a  National Cybercrime Summit organised by the agency.

“Projections by multiple sources show that the global loss to cybercrimes may reach a staggering $10.5 trillion,” the EFCC chief said in Abuja. Read more

Kano court sacks Sani Malumfashi as KANSIEC chairman (Tribune)

A Federal High Court sitting in Kano has sacked Prof. Sani Lawan Malumfashi as Chairman of the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC).

However, Justice Simon Amobeda on Tuesday gave the ruling in a case filed by Aminu Aliyu Tiga and the All Progressive Congress (APC).

Justice Amobeda ruled that Malumfashi was disqualified for being a political party card-carrying member. Read more

INEC cautions journalists against spreading fake news (Punch)

Three weeks before the governorship election in Ondo State, the Independent National Electoral Commission assured journalists in the state that their safety during the coverage of the election would be guaranteed.

The commission also warned journalists against publishing and spreading fake news before and during the election, which is set for November 16.

Speaking at a media workshop organised by INEC to interact with journalists in Akure, the state capital, on Tuesday, the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee of INEC, Sam Olumekun, stated that the commission had made necessary arrangements with security agencies to ensure that journalists are safe before, during, and after the election. The report reveals that over 2.1 million videos were removed from TikTok in Ni­geria, which is less than 1% of the total videos uploaded in the country in the latest reporting period, as the plat­form continues to strengthen its content moderation sys­tems to safeguard its diverse community. A former IRA prisoner died in a house blaze after the petroleum-based cream on his skin caught on fire while smoking in bed, a coroner has found.

Eugene McKee, who was jailed for his part in an IRA bombing campaign in 1991, was found ‘curled up’ on his bedroom floor by his ex-partner in Twinbrook in June last year.

An inquest which took place in Laganside Courthouse heard the skin products the 66-year-old was using significantly increased the flammability of his bedding. Read more

Imprisoned producer Harvey Weinstein is being treated for chronic myeloid leukemia, an uncommon form of bone marrow cancer, according to multiple media reports.

NBC News, The Hollywood Reporter and the New York Post reported that the 72-year-old former movie mogul was diagnosed with the disease earlier this month and has been undergoing treatment at Rikers Island prison in New York where he is serving time for multiple sexual offenses.

Weinstein underwent emergency heart surgery last month, and battled COVID and double pneumonia in July. Read more

Ghana International Mohammed Kudus has been charged by the English Football Association for violent conduct following Saturday’s Premier League match between Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham, BBC Sport reports.

Baltimore man arrested in alleged assaults on Washington Commanders fans (NBC)

A Baltimore man accused of assaulting opposing fans after the Ravens’ game against the Washington Commanders in the city on Oct. 13 was arrested Monday, Baltimore police said.

An arrest warrant was issued for John Callis, 24, after cellphone video of an assault on two men in Commanders jerseys went viral. The warrant included allegations of first-degree aggravated assault and second-degree assault, police said.

It wasn’t clear whether Callis was released after his arrest Monday. An attorney for Callis did not immediately respond to a request for comment Monday night. Read more
