The Ojora of Ijora and Iganmu Kingdom, Oba AbdulFatai Oyegbemi, has dethroned six chiefs for attending the campaign flag-off of the Labour Party at the Apapa area of Lagos State.
The monarch stated that the chiefs had attended the political event without his consent and had violated palace protocol by impersonating him there.
The affected chiefs are Chief Lateef Ojora (Bale Alaba Oro), Chief Saliu Biliamin (Bale Alafia Dodoro), and Chief Taiwo Hassan (Bale Oke Ira). Read more
Lagos enforces single-use plastic ban (Channels)
The Lagos State Government has commenced the enforcement of the ban on single-use plastics after it issued a six-month notice to all stakeholders.
The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced during a press conference at Alausa, Ikeja, that any company that failed to adhere to the ban on single-use plastics would be prosecuted and sealed off.
Wahab said the state government won’t succumb to any pressure or blackmail to consider another shift in date. Read more
Students protest Makinde’s renaming of Ibadan polytechnic (Sun)
Students from The Polytechnic Ibadan, on Tuesday, protested outside the Oyo State Government Secretariat over the institution’s renaming after Omololu Olunloyo, the state’s previous governor.
The displeased student carried placards with different inscriptions, asking Governor Seyi Makinde to rescind his decision and restore the polytechnic to its original name.
The students, who thronged the Oyo State Government Secretariat in their number, urged Makinde to protect the legacy and name of the Polytechnic Ibadan by reversing his decision to name it after the late mathematician as proposed last week during the funeral rites of the late statesman. Read more
Rivers, Lagos worst hit as cult clashes claim 1,686 lives in five years (Guardian)
A new report by SBM Intelligence has revealed that at least 1,686 people were killed in 909 separate incidents of gang-related violence across Nigeria between January 2020 and March 2025, with Rivers and Lagos states accounting for the highest number of fatalities.
The report, released on Tuesday, indicates that the South-South and Southwest geopolitical zones were the most affected, driven by longstanding cult rivalries and territorial disputes among groups such as Vikings, Icelanders, Eiye, Aiye, Black Axe, and Greenlanders.
Rivers State topped the fatality chart with 215 recorded deaths, followed by Lagos with 197 and Edo with 192. In total, the South-South region accounted for more than 750 deaths, with incidents concentrated in Rivers, Delta, and Bayelsa States. Read more

Troops of Operation Hadin Kai in Northeast Nigeria in collaboration with the Multinational Joint Task Force (MJNTF) have killed 10 Boko Haram/Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) during a fierce battle along Rann – Gamboru Ngala axis, close to the Nigeria – Cameroon border.
The Director of Defence Media Operations Maj-Gen Markus Kangye, revealed this in a statement on Monday night.
Kangye said the operation was strategically designed and executed to flush out remnants of Boko Haram/ISAWP terrorists operating within the border communities. Read more

Famed televangelist Jimmy Swaggart died on Tuesday, July 1. He was 90.
The Pentecostal preacher and pioneer of televangelism had been in critical condition at a Louisiana hospital after going into cardiac arrest on June 15, family members said during a prayer service last month.
“Today, our hearts are heavy as we share that Brother Swaggart has finished his earthly race and entered into the presence of His Savior, Jesus Christ. Today was the day he has sung about for decades,” according to announcement on his Facebook page. “He met his beloved Savior and entered the portals of glory. Hulu is developing a series adaptation of the Marisa Kashino novel “Best Offer Wins,” Variety has learned.
Greta Lee is attached to executive produce the project. According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, Lee is also planning to star in the series, but her deal is not closed at this stage in the development process. The book is due to be published in November.
Suzanne Heathcote is adapting the book for the screen and executive producing, with Kashino also set to executive produce. Chelsea McKinnies and Mackenzie Roussos of Entertainment 360 executive produce as well, while 20th Television is the studio. Read more

LeBron James opted into the $52.6 million player option in his contract to remain with the Los Angeles Lakers next season, agent Rich Paul said.
Paul announced James’ decision Sunday night in an interview with ESPN. When he takes the court next season, the Lakers’ No. 23 will set an NBA record for the most seasons played — 23.
Although James will again be under contract with the Lakers, Paul told ESPN that his client wants to play for a contender and suggested that a move to another team — potentially through a trade — remains a possibility. Read more
