MPC holds rates to monitor near-term economic developments (Leadership)

The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has announced a hold on all its monetary policy rates – after months of persistent policy tightening – to pause and monitor economic developments in the near future.

“The consideration is to enable a better understanding of near-term developments,” CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso stated at a media briefing to announce the outcome of the 300th meeting of the committee in Abuja on Tuesday.

MPC said it was mindful of the easing price of premium motor spirit (fuel), reduction in headline inflation and the record balance of payment in favour of the Nigerian economy. Read more 

Catholic priest dies while playing tennis (Punch)

The Catholic Diocese of Awka, Anambra State has expressed its deep sadness over the passing of one of its priests, Reverend Father Anthony Udogu, who died in the early hours of Monday, while playing lawn tennis.

The deceased, until his death was the Parish Priest of St. Francis Parish, Awka and Dean of Awka Il Deanery.

He was born on December 24, 1964, was ordained on August 19, 1995, and died on May 19, 2025. Read more

FG to sell Emefiele’s 753-unit housing estate (Vanguard)

The Federal Government has announced plans to sell a 753-unit housing estate forfeited by embattled former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, as part of assets recovered from him through the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Development confirmed on Tuesday that it had taken possession of the property, located in Abuja, following a formal handover by the EFCC at the Ministry’s headquarters in Mabushi.

This was disclosed in a statement signed by Salisu Haiba, Director of Press and Public Relations at the Ministry. Read more 

NASS inserted projects worth N6.93 trillion in 2025 budget – BudgIT (Guardian)

The National Assembly inserted 11,122 projects worth N6.93 trillion in the 2025 Federal Government (FG) budget, BudgIT, a civil society organisation promoting transparency and accountability, has revealed.

This figure represents 12.61% of the ₦54.99 trillion approved by Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the 2025 FG budget.

A further analysis of the insertions reveals that 238 projects valued above 5 billion each were inserted with little to no justification, while 984 projects worth N1.71 trillion and 1,119 projects worth between N600 million and N1 billion were inserted. Read more 

Poor UTME results caused by human error not technical glitch – Reps panel (Sun)

The poor results recorded at the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) have been linked to human error.

Sharing an update at a press conference on Tuesday on Tuesday, the chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Basic Education and Examination Bodies, Oboku Oforji, stated that the UTME result crisis was caused by human error and not a technical glitch.

The joints union’s of the FCT wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) and Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) has told the six area council chairmen that the union will only suspend its ongoing strike action when primary school teachers start receiving arrears.

A member of the state executive council committee of the union’s disclosed the development to our reporter on the telephone on Tuesday.

The member, who wanted to be anonymous because he was not authorised to speak to the press, said the joint unions executives gave the conditions during two separate meetings held last Thursday, and Friday. Read more

An 11-year-old girl who drowned during a birthday party at a waterpark was unlawfully killed, a coroner found today.

Kyra Hill, described as a ‘beacon of light’ by her family, got into difficulty in a designated swimming area at Liquid Leisure near Windsor, Berkshire, on August 6 2022.

Senior coroner Heidi Connor concluded that Kyra had been unlawfully killed following gross health and safety breaches at the park. Read more

Trump says Vatican might host imminent Russia-Ukraine ceasefire talks (CNA)

President Donald Trump said Monday that following a two-hour phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Russia and Ukraine will “immediately” begin ceasefire negotiations, with the Vatican possibly hosting the talks. 

“Negotiations between Russia and Ukraine will begin immediately. I have so informed President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine; Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission; President Emmanuel Macron of France; Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni of Italy; Chancellor Friedrich Merz of Germany; and President Alexander Stubb of Finland, during a call with me, immediately after the call with President Putin,” Trump wrote.
