A 12-year-old boy, Ibukun Solomon, has narrated how his mother, Tayelolu, killed his father, Felix, with a pestle while he ewas sleeping, after a minor argument in Ondo town, Ondo State.

Vanguard gathered that the mother of three, reportedly killed her 65-year-old husband, a farmer, by hitting him thrice with a pestle while sleeping in their house, located at the Government Reservation Area, GRA, in Ondo town.

Reports had it that the couple, in recent times, have been having a crisis and the wife always threatens to kill the husband and elope. Read more

Some Muslims faithful are celebrating the Maulud in colourful procession on the streets of Abuja. 

In the spirit of love, governments and Muslims all over the world mark Eid-ul-Mawlid, the commemoration of the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him), but not many understand the significance and why Muslims celebrate the Day.

I go save urges police to investigate alleged harassment of suspected Delta prostitutes (Nation)

Comedian, Otaghware Otas Onodjayeke aka I go save has demanded the probe of security operatives over the alleged harassment of suspected prostitutes in Delta state.

He called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun and the state’s police commissioner, Wale Abass to investigate the matter.

On Tuesday, September 27, a video surfaced online which captured moments a hotel along New Road in Sapele, and a brothel in the Ogun-Aja area of Delta State were raided by the state government through its office of Human Trafficking and Illicit drugs. Read more

Indigent UNILAG undergraduate gets help from Fewchore Finance (Nation)

After a media report on a University of Lagos (UNILAG) student, Oluwakemi Emmanuel, begging alms for tuition fees in Gbagada area of Lagos State, a financial service firm, Fewchore Finance, has paid up the fees and given her funds for upkeep.

Instead of the N225,000 tuition fee mentioned in the report, the firm presented a dummy cheque of N300,000 and an undisclosed amount for upkeep in the presence of her guardians.

The Head, Corporate Communications of the firm, Aniekan Equere, said they were amazed with the way the young lady went about sourcing for the funds, particularly carrying the placards despite her gender.  Read more 

Navy arrests 2 suspected pipeline vandals in Delta creeks (Punch)

The Nigerian Navy in Delta State, on Wednesday, paraded two suspected pipeline vandals arrested at Asugbo Creek in Warri South Local Government Area of the state.

The Commander of the Nigerian Navy Ship Delta, Commodore Chindo Yahaya, represented by the Executive Officer, NNS Delta, Navy Captain Solomon Paul, while parading the two suspected pipeline vandals, told journalists that the duo was nabbed in the Delta Creek on Sunday at 2.35 pm by the naval patrol team in conjunction with the staff of a private surveillance firm, Ocean Marine Solution when the operatives discovered a vandalised and leaking pipeline.

According to the Navy, on further enquiry, the patrol team noticed an illegal connection on the pipeline. Read more 

Maulud: Zamfara gov greets Muslims, prays for peace, unity (Guardian)

Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, has extended his heartfelt greetings to the entire Muslim community in Zamfara and Nigeria on the auspicious occasion of Maulud.

The 12th day of Rabi’ul Awwal ( Islamic calendar) is celebrated as the birthday anniversary of the Holy Prophet, Muhammad (peace be upon him).

In a statement on Wednesday by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, Lawal urged the nation’s Muslim community to cherish the occasion of Maulud and reflect on the teachings of Prophet Muhammad. Read more 

Budget: N4.7m for tobacco control laughable — NTCA  (Independent)

The Nigeria Tobacco Control Alliance (NTCA) on Tuesday described as laughable the allocation of N4.7 million to tobacco control in the 2023 Appropriation Act. 

The group said the amount was over 50 per cent reduction from N9.4 million allocated to control of tobacco in 2022, describing the development as unfortunate as this would slow down tobacco control efforts in the country. 

Speaking during a press conference organized to drum home the point in Abuja, Akinbode Oluwafemi, the Chairman of NTCA, said the slashing of funding from the national budget has threatened the gains made through the years. Read more

French ambassador to Niger leaves as relations nosedive after coup (VOA)

France’s ambassador to Niger left the country early on Wednesday morning, around one month after the military government ordered his expulsion and days after President Emmanuel Macron said the diplomat would be pulled out and French troops withdrawn.

Relations between Niger and France, its former colonial ruler which maintained a military presence in the country to help fight Islamist insurgents, have broken down since army officers seized power in Niamey in July.

The junta had ordered French ambassador Sylvain Itte to leave the country within 48 hours at the end of August in response to what they described as actions by France that were “contrary to the interests of Niger.” Read more 

Travis King in US custody after North Korea expulsion (BBC)

US soldier Travis King, who fled from South to North Korea in July, is in American custody after being expelled by Pyongyang, officials say.

According to US media reports, Pte King was transferred into US custody in China. The 23-year-old reconnaissance specialist illegally crossed into North Korea in July.

North Korean media said he had fled because of “inhuman treatment” and racism within the US military. Read more 

Nashawn Breedlove, rapper who played Lotto in Eminem’s film debut 8 Mile, dies at 46 (USAToday)

Nashawn Breedlove, who starred in 8 Mile, the 2002 film that was loosely based on Eminem’s life, has died at 46.

Known for playing freestyle rapper Lotto in the movie, Breedlove died in his home state of New Jersey, a spokesperson for the New Jersey Department of Health confirmed to USA TODAY on Tuesday.

Hattie McDaniel, 1st Black actor to win an Oscar, will have her missing award replaced by the Academy (CNN)

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) – organization behind the Oscars – will posthumously honor Hattie McDaniel by reinstating her missing best supporting actress Academy Award, which she won in 1940 for Gone With the Wind.

AMPAS, along with the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles, announced on Tuesday that it will gift a “replacement” Oscar to the Howard University Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts during a ceremony titled “Hattie’s Come Home” on October 1.

McDaniel was the first Black performer to win a competitive Academy Award for acting, for her supporting role as Mammy in 1939’s Gone with the Wind. At the 12th Academy Awards ceremony in 1940, McDaniel was seated separately from the film’s other nominees at the segregated Cocoanut Grove at the Ambassador Hotel, the AMPAS press release detailed. Algeria, Morocco spar over Western Sahara at UN (AfricaNews)

Moroccan and Algerian representatives to the United Nations sparred over the fate of Western Sahara on Tuesday, with Algiers calling for the revival of a long-stalled referendum on the fate of the former Spanish colony.

“We Algerians have chosen the camp of justice, decolonization, freedom, self-determination and human rights,” said Algerian Ambassador Amar Bendjama.

“This commitment applies to the cause of the Sahrawi people, who have been waiting for nearly half a century for the UN to do them justice.” Read more

Will Smith’s resume is real enough for two millenniums, yet his work ethic has never ceased. The multi-talent is gearing up for a musical comeback by way of a joint album with Joyner Lucas.

The Worcester, Mass., rapper took to Instagram on Monday (Sept. 25) to wish the Fresh Prince actor a happy 55th birthday. “Dear hero. I never thought I’d ever meet you,” Lucas wrote. As he continued to give the acting legend his flowers, he revealed that they have a collaborative project in the works. “Still trips me out that I grew up idolizing you, to then me making a record about my admiration and respect for you, to then you asking me to create a whole album with you.” Read more 

Osimhen’s agent threatens legal action against Napoli (Guardian)

Roberto Calendar, the agent of Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, said on Tuesday he “reserves the right to take legal action” against the club.

Calenda’s threat came after a video mocking the player was posted and then deleted from the Serie A side’s official TikTok on Tuesday.

He released a statement on messaging platform X, formerly known as Twitter, saying the video caused “very serious damage to the player”. Read more

Nigeria has lost the joint-bid to host the 2027 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) to Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.

Recall the Minister of Sports Development Senator John Owan Enoh arrived in Egypt on Tuesday with representatives of the Nigeria Football Federation for the country’s joint-bid with the Benin Republic to host AFCON in 2027.

The decision to, however, award the right to the three countries as co-hosts was taken in Cairo, Egypt, on Wednesday by CAF’s Executive Council members. Read more

Arsenal, Chelsea interested in signing Ivan Toney (ESPN)

Arsenal and Chelsea are among the clubs expected to test Brentford’s resolve in keeping forward Ivan Toney during the January transfer window, sources have told ESPN.

The 27-year-old is currently serving an eight-month ban from football after admitting 232 breaches of the Football Association’s betting rules.

Two-time world 200m champion Dafne Schippers has retired at the age of 31.

The Dutchwoman won gold at the 2015 World Championship in Beijing and in London two years later.

Competing in the same era as sprint greats Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Elaine Thompson-Herah, Schippers also claimed 100m silver at the 2016 Olympics in Rio. Read more
