Tragedy has struck in Kaura village in Yabo Local Government Area of Sokoto State as seven family members died after eating breakfast.
The head of the family, Malam Danbala told Daily Trust that he lost his two wives and five children to the incident.
He said, “I was in Niger State where I work as a labourer when I received a call on Monday from one of my brothers that there was a problem which required my urgent attention at home.
“He asked me to come back home as soon as I could. I insisted on knowing what happened but he cut the call without making further comment.
“So I took the early morning bus to Sokoto and when I reached home, I discovered all members of my family with the exception of my little daughter were all gone. They were buried even before my arrival on Tuesday as our religion demanded.” Read more
21-year-old steals boss’ car to fund relocation abroad (Punch)
The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 21-year-old man identified as Temple Samuel for stealing his boss’ Lexus ES 330 car.
The suspect was arrested by operatives of the Lagos Rapid Response Squad, according to a statement by the command’s Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin.
Hundeyin said Samuel was arrested with three others in the Ogba area of the state.
He identified those arrested with the suspect to include Benjamin Bassey aged 32, Chukwuemeka Okorie aged 29 and Joshua Agboche aged 37, who had conspired with him to sell the car. Read more
Sanwo-Olu to raise Lagos education sector budget above 10% (Vanguard)
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, on Tuesday, promised to prioritise the development of the education sector in the state through increased budget allocation to the sector which stands at 10 per cent presently.
The education ministry had N133.5 billion in 2020, N146.9 billion in 2021 and N173.5 billion in 2022, out of N1.758 trillion, which are bigger than the entire budgets of some states.
However, the state government earmarked 10 percent of its 2022 Budget to the education sector to adequately groom the youths towards making the desired impact and contributing to the progress and future development of the state.
The governor said this at the opening day of a two-day 2022, Lagos State Education Summit, held at Eko Hotel and Suites with the theme ‘Creating a Sustainable Fit-for-Purpose Education Model.’ Read more

EFCC nabs 9 suspected internet fraudsters in Abuja (Independent)
Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested nine suspected internet fraudsters in Abuja.
A statement on Wednesday by Head of Media & Publicity, Wilson Uwujaren, said they were nabbed in a sting operation.
The suspects are Bassey Sunday Junior, Samson Zachariah, Ogonyi Jeremiah, and Sunday Martins.
Others include Austin Yayison, Wilson Chinaza, Emmanuel Adeyi, Samuel Mark, and Emmanuel Bassey.
They were arrested on Tuesday, August 30 at Voque Hotel in the Mararaba Area of Abuja for alleged involvement in cybercrimes.
Thirteen phones, three laptops, and a Harman/Kardon music box were reportedly recovered from them. Read more
Police say Isaac Fayose faked kidnap attempt on him (Independent)
Osun State Police Command has stated that the news making the rounds that Isaac Fayose, the younger brother of Ayodele Fayose, the former governor of Ekiti escaped being abducted, is false.
The state police revealed that Fayose was involved in a lone minor accident along the Ibadan Ife expressway while attempting to make a U-turn, having noticed that some vehicles ahead of him were doing so without knowing what happened ahead.
The news was rife on Tuesday that Fayose narrowly escaped death by the whiskers from unknown gunmen on the road On Monday 29, August 2022.
But Osun Police in a statement issued and signed by Yemisi Opalola, the spokesperson of the command, made available to newsmen on Tuesday evening, the Command disclosed that no such incident was reported in any part of the State. Read more
Cracks as Shekarau loyalists pledges support to Kwankwaso, NNPP in Kano (Guardian)
No fewer than 45 political bigwigs and stunt loyalists of former Governor Ibrahim Shekarau on Tuesday resolved to remain in the New Nigeria Peoples Party NNPP.
Shekarau’s political disciples who have refused to decamp to the Peoples Democratic Party PDP along with their political leader vowed to muscle support for the Kwankwasiyya movement to regain power in Kano.
Reading a communique at the end of their emergency meeting in Kano, the leader of the group and Shekarau’s commissioner for Information, Barrister Haruna Isa Dederi, said the 45 members who signed the communique, resolved to remain in NNPP to exercise their civic rights as enshrined in the constitution.
Dederi, a member representing Karaye/Rogo federal constituency, in the House of Representatives explained that “We jointly and severally remain members of the NNPP Kano state chapter with an unshaken loyalty and determination to carry the party to success in the forthcoming general election”. 2 arrested in Ogun for gang raping girl, 18 (Sun)
Ogun State Police Command arrested two men, Emmanuel Thompson, and Joshua Godwin, for allegedly gang-raping an 18- years -old girl.
According to Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) SP Abimbola Oyeyemi, the suspects were arrested following a complaint lodged at Ogijo Divisional Headquarters by the victim, who reported that she boarded a commercial motorcycle at about 8 am of on Tuesday, from MRI company area to Ogijo bus stop, but on the way, the rider who carried another male passenger with her suddenly diverted to another route, while the other male passenger started threatening to kill her if she didn’t cooperate with them.
“She complained further that they forcefully took her to a room in a house in the area, where two other men were waiting for them. On getting there, the two men they met in the room and the accompanied male passenger took turns to have sex with her forcefully.
“Upon the report, DPO Ogijo division, CSP Onatufe Umoh, detailed detectives to the scene,where two amongst the suspects were apprehended while other accomplices escaped. The two suspects have confessed to the commission of the crime”. Read more
Strike: ASUU asks FG to channel $23m Abacha loot on education (Channels)
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has asked the Federal Government to channel the recovered $23 million Abacha loot to meet its demands.
ASUU President, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke made the call on Tuesday during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, while decrying the continued closure of public universities as a result of the protracted strike by lecturers.
Last Tuesday, the Federal Government and the US signed an agreement to repatriate a new batch of funds looted by the former Nigerian head of state, Sani Abacha.
Amid the government’s plan to utilise the money for the completion of the Abuja-Kano road, Lagos-Ibadan expressway, and the Second Niger Bridge, the ASUU President believes the current administration would have deployed the recovered money to education if it truly loves the sector. Read more

Shonka Dukureh’s cause of death has been confirmed following an autopsy.
The 44-year-old actress and singer died from natural causes of “hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease,” according to Tennessee’s Davidson County Medical Examiner’s office, reported the Los Angeles Times and other outlets Wednesday.
Hypertension is more commonly known as high blood pressure. Atherosclerosis describes the “thickening or hardening of the arteries caused by a buildup of plaque in the inner lining of an artery,” according to John Hopkins Medical.
The Davidson County Medical Examiner’s Office in Nashville did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment. Read more

Baby killed by giant hailstones during freak storm after extreme drought (Newsweek)
A 1-year-old girl in Spain has died after being hit by an enormous four-inch hailstone the size of an orange, a local official said on Wednesday.
The toddler was struck on the head in the Girona province of Catalonia on Tuesday and was immediately rushed to hospital. She was pronounced dead from head trauma in the early hours of August 31, said Carme Vall, mayor of the town of La Bisbal d’Empordà.
“We’ve had the awful case of the little girl who was hit by a stone,” Vall told Spain’s national broadcaster, RTVE. “There wasn’t much that could be done for her and she died today. It was a terrible accident.”
The storm and its unusually large hailstones were filmed by people nearby. Social media videos showed the large hailstones raining down from the sky, creating huge splashes in swimming pools, smashing car windows and slamming into the ground. Read more

The jury in the trial of former Manchester United player Ryan Giggs has been discharged after failing to reach verdicts on any of the charges.
The 48-year-old denied headbutting ex-partner Kate Greville, 38, during a row at his home in November 2020.
He also denied controlling behaviour, as well as assaulting Ms Greville’s sister Emma, 26, at Manchester Crown Court.

Chelsea had made three previous bids for Fofana which were all swiftly rejected by Leicester – two in excess of £60m and one believed to be £60m plus £10m in add-ons.

Emma Raducanu has revealed she will likely focus on WTA 250 tournaments – the lowest ranked tour events – for the remainder of the season after seeing her US Open title defence come to a crashing end at the very first hurdle. The 19-year-old was beaten in straight sets by Alize Cornet at Flushing Meadows in the opening round of the Grand Slam in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The Australian driver had a busy weekend at the Belgian Grand Prix, coming days after the announcement from the team that the two parties will go their separate ways at the conclusion of 2022.
While Ricciardo had a contract for next season, his third year of a three-year deal, the Woking-based team sought a way out of the contract as the former Red Bull and Renault racer has failed to meet expectations.

LIV Golf players asked not to wear logos, to skip pro-am at BMW PGA Championship (ESPN)
The DP World Tour has asked the LIV Golf players scheduled to compete in next month’s BMW PGA Championship to refrain from wearing LIV logos on their clothes, according to an email sent to the players from DP World Tour CEO Keith Pelley on Tuesday.
In the memo, Pelley informed the players that they “will not be required to play in the Wednesday Pro-Am and out of respect for our partners, our broadcasters and your fellow competitors, we would kindly ask you to consider not wearing LIV Golf-branded apparel during your participation at Wentworth.”
A copy of the memo was obtained by ESPN. Two LIV Golf players who plan to compete in the BMW PGA Championship, set for Sept. 8-11 at Wentworth Club in Surrey, England, also confirmed receiving the email. Read more
