Hundreds of Nigerian youths have taken to social media to speak against the handover of Lekki toll gate, where Nigerian forces opened fire on unarmed protesters last October, to its owners Lekki Concession Company.
Members of the judicial panel set up by the Lagos State government to investigate the October 2020 Lekki shooting voted 5-4 in favor of the handover on Saturday.
Young people mobilising through social media have called out the panel for approving the release of the toll gate while an investigation is ongoing. Many are vexed that the government has not owned to the killing of unarmed protesters, who marched against police brutality on the night of October 20.

Lagos Assembly moves against illegal administration of COVID-19 vaccines (Independent)
The Lagos State House of Assembly is set to regulate the administration of coronavirus vaccines by both private and public hospitals in the state.
To this end, the House called on the executive arm of the state to return the 2020 Coronavirus Pandemic Bill, which was passed by the House months ago, so as to amend the same to reflect the regulation of administration of the vaccines in the state.
Moving the motion during plenary on Monday, acting Chairman, House Committee on Health, Hon. Hakeem Sokunle complained that various COVID-19 vaccines that have not been tested to ascertain their genuineness have found their way into the state.
Sokunle explained that it is high time the House called for the regulation of the vaccines administration in the state in order to avert future health damages. Read more
Lagos to build more schools to check out-of-school children (Guardian)
As part of efforts to encourage more enrolment of school-age children and check out-of-school children, Lagos State Government has expressed its readiness to build more schools.
The State Commissioner for Education, Mrs Folasade Adefisayo disclosed this during a meeting with the Chief Resilience Officer (CRO), Lagos State Resilience Office (LASRO), Arc. Gbolahan Owodunni Oki and the Chairman, Itire/Ikate Local Council Development Area, Dr. Ahmed Olanrewaju Apatira at Ikeja on the proposal for the establishment of Itire/Ikate Model College.
In a statement, on Monday, the commissioner also hinted that special provision was made for additional schools in the Y2021 budget, while existing school infrastructure would be constantly upgraded to make the teaching and learning environment more conducive. Read more
Parliamentary workers vow to shut NASS, State Houses of Assembly, others (Nation)
The Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN) has vowed to shut down the National Assembly, the National Assembly Service Commission, all State Houses of Assembly, all State Houses of Assembly Service Commissions and others over the non – implementation of financial autonomy for the parliamentary arm of government.
The workers are asking for full implementation of financial autonomy for all State Houses of Assembly.
They asked the Nigerian Governors Forum to implement the demand or face a total shutdown through a nationwide strike.
According to a strike notice addressed to President Muhammadu Buhari dated January 27th, 2021 the workers said they have been patient for two years without the implementation of financial autonomy for state Houses of Assemblies as demanded by Section 121(3) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Police arraign two siblings for felony, assault, stealing, malicious damage (Tribune)
The Oyo State Police Command, on Monday, arraigned two siblings, one Dauda Abimbara, 65 years and Musa Abimbara, 53 years before a Chief Magistrate Court sitting, Iyaganku, Ibadan on a five-count charge.
In a charge number MI/105C/2021 brought before the court, the two siblings were accused of conspiring with each other to commit a felony, assault, stealing and malicious damage and deprivation of liberty.
At the sitting presided over by Senior Magistrate O.O. Ogunkanmi, both siblings were accused of unlawfully assaulting one Jimoh Kabiru by beating him with the fist on a land situated at Elere, Sabo area, Oyo.
The accused were deemed to have committed offence contrary to and punishable under section 516 of the criminal code, cap 38, Vol II, Laws of Oyo state of Nigeria, 2000. Read more
El-Rufai kicks against amnesty for bandits, calls for their elimination (ThisDay)
The Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, has again, reiterated his stand against negotiating with bandits who are terrorising the state.
Speaking in an interview with the Hausa Service of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), monitored on Monday, El-Rufai declared that any bandit arrested in Kaduna State will be killed, maintaining that “the state is at war with bandits”.
He also disagreed with suggestions by prominent Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, that the bandits should be granted amnesty and compensated.
Gumi had recently visited the bandits in their forests in Kaduna and Zamfara States to broker peace. Read more
Kano arrests, fines 200 COVID-19 safety protocol violators (Independent)
No fewer than 200 people have been arrested, fined, or incarcerated for the violation as the joint team of security agencies and COVID-19 marshals continue to sensitize and enforce safety protocols in the state.
The state commissioner for Information, Malam Muhammad Garba said in a statement that of the total figure of the violators, 102 were fined N5, 000 each, while 25 others have been remanded in prison by the 21 Mobile Courts set up to deal with non-compliance to safety protocols.
He said the enforcement measure became necessary to preserve public safety and ensure full compliance with the Coronavirus prevention protocols, particularly the use of a face mask.
Malam Garba said the enforcement, which is led by the state Road Traffic Agency (KAROTA), comprised of the police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps, Department of State Security Service and the COVID-19 marshals, is being executed in strategic locations, where violators are arrested. New Ebola case detected in eastern DR Congo (France24)
A new case of the Ebola virus has been detected in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo near the city of Butembo, and the infected person has died, the health ministry said on Sunday.
A woman was found with symptoms of the deadly Ebola virus in the town of Biena on Feb. 1 and died in hospital in Butembo on Feb. 3. She was married to a man who had contracted the virus in a previous outbreak.
“The provincial response team is already hard at work. It will be supported by the national response team which will visit Butembo shortly,” the statement said.
The announcement potentially marks the start of Congo’s 12th Ebola outbreak since the virus was discovered near the Ebola River in 1976, more than double any other country. Read more

But this year, the largest annual human migration on Earth has been put on hold, following the Chinese government’s call to avoid “nonessential” trips during the holiday period to prevent a resurgence of the coronavirus.
That is a lot to ask. The Lunar New Year, also known as Spring Festival in China, is the most important holiday in the Chinese calendar — the equivalent of Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Eve combined.
For many Chinese who left their hometowns for better job opportunities in big cities, it is the only chance they may get to see their families this year. Parents who left children behind in villages so they could work may face another 12 months without them. Read more
Syria ‘finds body of archaeologist Khaled al-Asaad beheaded by IS’ (BBC)
Syrian authorities believe they have found the body of a top archaeologist who was killed by the Islamic State (IS) group in 2015 while he tried to protect the ancient city of Palmyra.
Militants publicly beheaded Khaled al-Asaad, 82, after he refused to disclose the location of valuable artefacts.
State media reported that his body was thought to be among three discovered in Kahloul, east of Palmyra.

Haitian authorities said Sunday they had foiled an attempt to murder President Jovenel Moise and overthrow the government, as a dispute rages over when his term ends.
The plot was an “attempted coup d’etat,” according to Haitian Justice Minister Rockefeller Vincent, with authorities saying at least 23 people have been arrested, including a top judge and an official from the national police.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has denied corruption charges in court for the first time as his trial resumes in Jerusalem.
Mr Netanyahu entered his plea at the hearing which had been previously postponed because of the pandemic.
He is the first serving Israeli prime minister to go on trial, which takes place just a month before elections.
