The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has suspended two of its officers over a scandal involving a convicted inmate allegedly attempting to obtain an international passport while still in custody.
In a statement released on Saturday by the Service public relations officer, deputy controller of Corrections, Abubakar Umar, the misconduct was uncovered through the automated passport application system operated by the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS).
This discovery, Umar noted, highlighted the strength of ongoing reforms and inter-agency cooperation. Read more

Illegal detention: FCT CP warns against bribes, orders release of detainees (Sun)
The Commissioner of Police for Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Command, Ajao Adewale, has warned officers and men of the command to stop illegal detentions, extortion, and unlawful interference in civil disputes, particularly land-related cases.
Adewale, has also called on residents not to offer bribes to police officers under any guise. He said it is a criminal offence under Section 118 of the Penal Code Act.
Adewale’s warning is coming following massive complaints from residents about the unlawful detention of individuals over bailable offences, demands for payment before investigation, and police involvement in matters that is clearly outside their jurisdiction. Read more
Again, terrorists kill 16, burn more than 20 houses in Plateau communities (Tribune)
AT least 16 people were killed and more than 20 houses razed during coordinated attacks on two local government areas of Plateau State on Thursday night, local officials and community leaders have confirmed.
Eyewitnesses said dozens of gunmen stormed Juwan village in Tungur District, Bokkos Local Government Area, at about 8:25 p.m., firing indiscriminately and ransacking homes.
They said 13 people, mostly women and children, were killed in the attack. Read more
Kebbi Government Confirms Bandits Killed 30 People In Zuru (Channels)
The Kebbi State Government has confirmed the loss of 30 lives in the recent banditry attacks on the Zuru communities.
Chairmen of Zuru and Danko Wasagu Local Government Areas, Muhammad Gajere and Hussaini Bena, reported that 16 people were killed in Tadurga, while 14 others lost their lives in Kyebu and Yar-Kuka in the Waje District.
While speaking during a visit by the State Deputy Governor, Senator Umar Tafida, to Tadurga on Friday, Gajere and Bena added that several others were injured. The attackers also made away with livestock and other valuables. Read more
5 die as bomb explosion rocks Kano (Vanguard)
No fewer than five persons have been confirmed dead following a bomb explosion in Kano State on Saturday.
Additionally, 10 others were said to have sustained injuries from the explosion.
Confirming the incident, the Kano State Commissioner of Police, Adamu Ibrahim, said the suspected explosion involved an Explosive Ordnance Disposal, EOD, personnel in a military-grade mortar vehicle.
